3 Commodore s Greeting I am so excited to start our 2017 season. Vice Commodore Gina Trebilcock, Rear Commodore Todd Tigges and I have been in contact all winter making our summer plans. A big thank you to Denise Snyder and the Auxiliary for reupholstering the furniture in the front room. It will be just the beginning of Club improvements. I m looking forward to working with Denise and the Auxiliary this summer. The front cover of the yearbook was drawn by local artist, PIBYC member and my long-time friend, Sara Booker Sheehan. Prints of the front cover will be sold in the Ship s Store. Please join us and enjoy one of the best views on the island. We are so lucky to have this beautiful property. Let s take care of it. 5 Commodore s Profile Debbie was born in Cleveland, Ohio in She was a much awaited first grandchild. Never did she disappoint a go-getter from day one. Living with her mother, father, grandmother, great aunt and aunt, life was interesting. It would remind you of the current Duck In lots of people, confusion and nonsense. She was known in the neighborhood as a daredevil. For example: one night the family got a call from a neighbor wondering why the Christmas tree was down before the holiday. Unbeknownst to anyone she had pulled it down on top of herself. Debbie has many scars and hospital visits to back this up. Dr. Mooney knew her by her first name. Along with her two brothers Bobby and Danny, the family moved to Rocky River, Ohio in Her mother signed her up for swimming, diving and synchronized swimming. This was for the family to get three hours of peace and keep an active girl busy. In 1982 the family purchased a cottage on the West Shore. This is where all those hours of swim lessons came in handy. Her first Put-in-Bay jobs were as swim instructor for the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club and life guard for the Crew s Nest. She is the longest part-time employee at the Crew s Nest which she reminds Joan Booker of each year. She drove an old Chevy Van that spent most of the time at Parker s Garage with Roger shaking his head. Debbie is very social, so along with the job came many friends. She had a few parties at the Old Duck In. One time she danced through the front room floor. Her solution was to cover the hole with a couch and worry about it next year. Debbie attended Andrew s University in Michigan where she met her husband, Larry Larson. She graduated from college with a BS in Nursing and has worked for the Cleveland Clinic for 25 years. She married Larry in her parent s yard in Debbie and Larry are the proud parents of Richard (17) and Drake (14). Both boys have been active in Swim/Sail at PIBYC. The Put-in-Bay Yacht Club

What an amazing group of women, past and present, that inspire and motivated others. Because of their hard work, we are able to support the PIBYC in many unique ways. In 2016, we were able to finish the children s playground and sponsor 16 sailors at Junior Bay Week. Deborah Palmer and I look forward to Summer 2017 and seeing all of you at the club. The Auxiliary will get started in mid-june with the welcome potluck, the fabulous Ladies Luncheons, fitness classes and annual yard sail. Please check the PIBYC weekly calendar so that no event is missed. Our project for this summer will be to spruce up the front room at the Club. 17 Club Officers, Trustees, and Staff Profiles Deborah Palmer Aux. Vice President Deborah was born the same year that the family cottage The Second Last Thing was built, and she s spent almost every summer at Putin-Bay since then. Deborah s grandparents, Ray and Betty Arth, were very active in the club and Ray served as Treasurer for 16 years. This led to the inevitable service of her parents, Kris & Reni Miller, on the board and as a Commodore Couple Kris in 1990 and Reni in Reni also served as President of the Auxiliary in 1986 and Deborah s sister, Connie, was 2014 President. Carrying on the family tradition, her uncle Raymond (Arth) served on the board and as Commodore in 1994 and aunt Pati (Arth) served as President of the Auxiliary in During Deborah s childhood, she participated in the Junior Swimming and Sailing program as well as volunteered at many PIBYC events. She fondly remembers many years of extremely early mornings serving breakfast to the sailors with her mom and other members of the Auxiliary. After a memorable Parrot Head Party in 2005, she met her husband Dan Palmer, also a sailor, while he was working as a carpenter on the island that summer. They have a son, Declan, whose nautical nursery indicates his parents strong desire that he become a boater himself one day! Deborah is looking forward to serving on the Auxiliary board this year and continuing her family s tradition of service to the club. CC Zerbey Aux. Vice President CC Calfee Zerbey started her summers at Put-in-Bay at 6 months old, as the 3 d generation of Calfees on the Island (along with her brother, Alex). After participating in the PIBYC Swim/Sail program for years, she worked at various Island establishments including The Boardwalk, AJ s Deli, The Boathouse, and The Beer Barrel. Indoctrinating her husband into all that the Island has to offer, Kevin & CC now spend the summers at PIB with their two children, Martin & Caroline. CC is a graduate of Ohio University and a resident of Rocky River, OH where her husband is the 7 th grade Spanish teacher and boys varsity soccer coach. When she is not busy with her family, CC works as an immersive plug-and-play marketing and communications consultant. She is excited to join the Auxiliary as her beloved grandmother, Nancy Calfee, was Auxiliary president in the 1960s, and CC is excited to be able to continue the family island traditions started by her grandparents more than sixty years ago. Barbara Chrysler Club Manager Barb was born and raised in Lakewood, Ohio and studied Business Administration at Ohio University. She moved to Put-in-Bay in 1980 and has called the island home for the past 3 decades. Shortly after moving here, she was offered a full time public relations position at the Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce. As executive secretary, she was in charge of everything tourismrelated and chaired all events including 4 th of July, Founder s Day, and New Year s Eve. She was also the editor of the Island Guide. After 12 years at the Chamber, Barb was offered a full time management position at the brand new Perry Holiday Hotel where she remained for 17 years. In addition to her work, Barb has continued to volunteer her services to island projects and most recently was secretary of the Put-in-Bay Garden Club. Barb s home is Put-in-Bay and she is a tireless advocate for the island. She knows that the Club is a tremendous time honored tradition at Put-in-Bay and she is happy to honor the Club s past and future. Barb is looking forward to meeting the members and listening to their ideas and working with everyone this season. Our Flag Officers working together! The Put-in-Bay Yacht Club

What this means is when you shop at Kroger (any location) you can direct Kroger to donate a small percentage of your purchase to the Swim/Sail program. There is no additional cost to you. You must have a Kroger Plus card and must enroll your card online at the Kroger Community Rewards website. There are instructions and a direct link to the Kroger site on the swim/sail website (pibswimsail.org) to help walk you through the short enrollment process. Our organization number is Swim/Sail receives over $500 a year from Kroger and that is with only a handful of participants signed up. If we could have a few more people enroll we could double that amount. Every little bit counts. Help us shop our way to better funding for water safety education. IMPORTANT: The KCR program resets on April 1 of each year. If you are enrolled before that date you must renew or relink your Plus Card to Swim/Sail on or after April 1. Renewing is very easy! 70 Take Advantage of our Club Affiliations Put-in-Bay Yacht Club is proud to be affiliated with the Associated Yacht Clubs (AYC), Inter-Lake Yachting Association (I-LYA), Greater Cleveland Boating Association (GCBA), and Yachting Clubs of America (YCA). Each year, part of your yacht club dues are applied toward affiliation and related costs. In return, PIBYC members receive a membership in each of these organizations. This affiliation brings several added benefits to our members. In most cases, it includes reciprocity with other member clubs. PIBYC members are able to enjoy the facilities, restaurants, and docks of these clubs, and are often welcome at special events. Call ahead to check on dockage availability or any other regulations concerning your visit. Additionally, each organization affords boating opportunities. AYC offers a full schedule of power boating activities including Rendezvous and Poker Runs. I-LYA sponsors both Sail and Power Regattas and a week-long cruise. Both organizations have wonderful off-season weekend parties. GCBA promotes boating and is politically active. For more information, contact one of our Association delegates.
