10 Oakton Crew Facts: Crew is co-ed our women s and men s teams work together to support one another, ensuring a strong overall team dynamic Most rowers start out with no prior rowing experience, and all students are welcome We compete in one of the largest & best scholastic rowing regions in the country, with 50+ local crew teams Oakton alumni row in college at club & NCAA D1 Varsity levels some with scholarships
11 How does Crew work at Oakton? Club Varsity sport all rowing programs in Fairfax County are established as clubs Same privileges & responsibilities of a Varsity sport, including Varsity letters and access to training resources also the same rules We receive NO funding from the school or from Oakton Athletic Boosters - we are 100% self-funded and self-supporting, which means ALL parents are needed to help run the club!

18 FALL LEARN-TO-ROW: REGISTRATION OPEN NOW ON THE WEBSITE! Fall rowing sessions are open to EVERYONE and will mix freshman and novices with returning varsity athletes. The Learn-to-Row program is designed to introduce new rowers to the sport, from the proper way to hold an oar to porting a shell to actually going out and getting fast in a boat. Combined outings on the water ensure that freshman and novices get a feel for not only the water, but get to experience being part of our team.
19 Time Commitment: Winter Conditioning: November - Oakton High School 2.5 hours daily, M-T 4-6:30 p.m. (TBD) 2 hours on Saturdays Spring Water Practices: February - Sandy Run Boathouse/Occoquan River 2.5 hours daily, M-F 2.5 hours on Saturdays until regatta season Regatta Season: March 23rd - Late May 2.5 hours daily, M-F All Day on Saturdays - bring your homework!

21 Each rower s family must satisfy TWO Volunteer Commitments each season ONE for Crew, and ONE for VASRA Volunteer jobs are all listed on the Support/Service section of the website Join a Committee during registration!
22 Hospitality: At every regatta Crew hosts a hospitality tent to provide healthy snacks to Oakton rowers Families sign up for snacks through Sign-Up Genius We also introduced a Crew Family tent in great for getting to know other parents! Friday Night Pasta Parties - Every Friday of regatta season, the entire team gathers at one home for carbo-loading. Families are assigned foods to bring to supplement the pasta, such as salads and fruits, each week in the Monday Catch Volunteering at the Hospitality Tents & for Pasta Parties is a great way to meet your Crew service commitments, and meet new parents!
23 VASRA (On the River): River Work Days Concession Stand Help Dock Master Assistants Launch Drivers Finish Line Helpers & Timers Parking Lot Assistants (this role offers a reduction in Crew dues) All families are required to meet at least ONE VASRA requirement per year

25 Team Costs: OCCBC is a non-profit, self funded sport Dues & Fundraising pay for: Professional coaching - 8 coaches on average World-class equipment - we maintain our own fleet of shells, oars, launches (motor boats), nuts, bolts, shoes, life jackets, etc Equipment storage & maintenance, boathouse rental, insurance, regatta fees, pasta party basics (you get the idea) Again, we are entirely self-funded. It takes an average of $1,450 to support one rower for one year.
26 Athlete Costs: Dues are $1,100 per rower, per year Team has a collective fundraising goal of $30,000 each rower has a participation commitment and a goal of a minimum of $300 Uniform Costs (new rowers only): approx. $90 Travel Regattas: Stotesbury: $220 (Optional for non-competitive boats) Nationals: $220 (Competitive boats only) Transportation to River (Spring Season): Approx. $470 per rower Carpools are also available at no cost *Scholarships are available through a local rowing club
