2 Why you Shouldn t Speed in Neighborhoods It has been a while since an article has been placed in the newsletter to remind residents of speeding. Since we have added more developments in our Township, it doesn t hurt to repeat. Speeding is against the law for obvious reasons; driving too fast is dangerous and potentially deadly not just for you but for the people on the road at the same time as you. Speeding results in expensive speeding tickets and potentially points on your driver license. Obtaining a speeding ticket means you must take a driver s class to remove the points from your license; after a certain number of points your, license is suspended. While it is considered dangerous to speed on any road, it is particularly dangerous to speed through residential neighborhoods. Residential neighborhoods are where families reside with their young children. It is where children play in their yards and where family pets run around to play. Joggers and walkers exercise in neighborhoods. Families take morning and evening walks with their kids, pets and babies in strollers. Speeding through a neighborhood is more dangerous than anywhere else because of the chances of hitting a pedestrian on a walk or in their own front yard. Even when parents are keeping a close eye on their children or pets, a bouncing ball or toy that blows into the street could prompt a child to run into the street in a split second before mom or dad can reach the child. Our Police Officers are well aware of the concern our residents have expressed over motorists who speed through the residential areas and collector roads Township-wide. To help persuade motorists to obey the posted speed limit and other traffic control devices, our police officers spend considerable time monitoring selected traffic posts. These monitoring details are done specifically to help remind motorists that our police officers are out working with our community members to keep our roads safe for everyone. ADAMS TOWNSHIP NEWS Now that scam has resurfaced as what's being called the "one ring scam." Crooks are using robocalling technology to place Internet calls that only ring once to cell phones. If you pick up, the robocaller just drops the line. But the bigger danger is if you miss the call. Like so many people, you might think it's an important call and dial that number right back. Bad move. Turns out the area codes are in the Caribbean. That call will cost you between $15 and $30! And to add insult to injury, the criminals behind these calls will sign you up (through your cell provider) for bogus services that will be crammed on your phone bill if you return their call. WTAE/Better Business Bureau reports there are 5 area codes being used to perpetrate this ploy: The key thing to know is, when an unfamiliar number comes in, you're better off waiting for a voic to determine if you have a legitimate caller before calling it back. You can also Google the phone number itself. If the number is a scam, chances are good that others will have posted warnings about it. Finally, how can you tell if further phony charges are being crammed onto your cell bill? Look for innocuous terms like "special services," "Internet advertising," "service fee," "calling plan," or "minimum monthly usage fee." A typical cram charge for a business might be $10 or $15. For a consumer, it will be more like $5 or $10. Beware of the One Ring Scam on Your Phone That missed call on your cellphone could cost you $30.00 but maybe not in the way you think. This is an old scam that has roared back to life. Years ago, crooks found a way to exploit a handful of international area codes that don't require a foreign code to dial up. War Memorial The deadline for brick orders to go into the memorial for the dedication was March 14, All orders received after that will go into the memorial two weeks before Memorial Day of the following year. The Adams War Memorial honors all Veterans from anywhere, living or deceased. The bricks can be ordered throughout the years and they last a lifetime 2

3 What s New in Construction Corner? Adams Township is a very desirable place to live. With low taxes, good schools and access to retail stores and major highways, it is easy to see why. Residential and commercial construction projects continue to move forward as the economy improves. We have several new residential plans that have been approved in the Township and are under construction which include Fulton Crossing, Kingsridge, Vista Ridge and Pleasant Ridge. Fulton Crossing is located along Three Degree Road just south of Taylor Ridge and the Adams Township Park. It will contain 82 new single family homes with Heartland Homes being the builder. The grading and road construction has begun for Kingsridge which is located along Mars Evans City Road across from Mars Evans City Storage and will contain 60 new single family homes with S&A Homes and Ryan Homes as the builders. Vista Ridge is located along Ridge Road across from Morning Grove Manor. This plan will have 58 single family homes with the builders being S&A Homes and Weaver Master Builders. Construction is under way in the South Village at the Pointe and will contain 158 townhouse units with Ryan Homes as the builder. Pleasant Ridge is located off of Mt. Pleasant Road with the entrance to the plan in Pine Township. The Adams Township portion will have 15 lots and is currently under construction. A number of other plans are currently active with new homes. They include Adams Crossing phases Three and Four, Myoma Woods phase 2, Village of Camp Trees, The Gables at Brickyard Road phase 3 with phase 4 starting soon, Chatham Court, Taylor Ridge and Amherst Village Phase 2. The Route 228 corridor continues to be a very popular place for new businesses, and Adams Township is seeing its fair share. An increase in activity could begin in the next few years as the recently passed transportation funding bill has allotted money for the widening of Route 228 from Franklin Road to Mars Valencia Road. The Route 228 bridge replacement project is under way and scheduled to be completed this fall. The project will include the new bridge along with the widening of about one mile of the road to four lanes including the intersection with Mars Valencia Road. A couple of new commercial projects that have started or will start in the near future are the office/retail/ apartment building located at 525 Beaver Street Extension and the Family Entertainment Center at the Shoppes of Heritage Creek. The Family Entertainment ADAMS TOWNSHIP NEWS 3 facility will have outdoor attractions such as miniature golf, go karts and bumper boat, and inside will have black light golf, laser tag, party rooms and food service. For those of you who travel Myoma Road, you will notice some major construction near the Myoma Bridge. The State has started work on Route 3017 (Myoma Road) to replace the bridge carrying Myoma Road over Breakneck Creek. The structurally deficient open-grate bridge on Myoma Road, built in 1940, will be replaced with a steel girder bridge. A temporary bridge and roadway will be used to move traffic to bypass the existing bridge. Traffic will remain on the temporary road until the new bridge and approaches are built. A short-term detour will be needed to tie the existing roadway to the temporary road. This detour will be required to create a transition once the temporary roadway paving is completed in late spring or early summer. This $3,060,783 bridge replacement project is being constructed by Mekis Construction Corporation and is expected to be completed by the end of October. Another State project is to replace the pipe carrying Route 3015 (Mars/Evans City Road near Breakneck Creek Regional Authority) over an unknown tributary of Breakneck Creek in Adams Township. A new concrete box culvert will replace the old steel pipe that was originally installed in A single lane condition controlled by temporary traffic signals will be in place on the Mars/Evans City Road to facilitate the construction of the box culvert. That traffic condition is expected to be in place in May and will remain until the box culvert is finished. The State will notify motorists of the traffic pattern change prior to its start. Adams - Mars Farmer s Market The Adams-Mars Farmer s Market is open Saturdays from 9:00 to noon, May through September. The location of the Market in Mars is at the Woodland Valley Church parking lot (across the street from the Mars Post Office). All items are locally grown or made. Local vendors sell in season vegetables, fruits, plants, flowers, shrubs, honey, eggs and handmade crafts. The Market is sponsored by Adams Township and the Adams Township Agricultural Security Committee. Take a moment to stop by some Saturday and support your local producers.

5 Storm Water Collection M.E.S.A., Inc. (Municipal Engineering Service Association), Adams Township s Engineer will have a 1-2 man crew through out the Township in the next several months to start collecting information on the entire storm sewer collection system within the Township. They will be using GPS to locate the storm sewer collection system. This is a requirement from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to update the Townships existing Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) mapping. This will satisfy the Renewal of the Townships NPDES Phase II MS4 General Permit (PAG- 13). Reducing Runoff: Clean Water is Every Resident s Responsibility The next time it rains or when the snow starts melting with the approach of spring, take a look outside. There you ll see water trickling over your lawn, down your driveway, and into the street. To some, this may be a calming sight. However, for anyone who knows anything about runoff, this is an alarming event because as the water flows over land, it picks up debris, chemicals, dirt, and other pollutants and carries them to nearby streams, wetlands, lakes, and storm sewer systems. There, the runoff is discharged, untreated, into the water we all use for swimming, fishing, and drinking. As a result, stormwater runoff is one of the greatest threats to the nation s water supplies. Instead of being part of the problem, though, township residents can be part of the solution by practicing healthy household habits that can keep common pollutants, including pesticides, pet waste, grass clippings, and automotive fluids, off the ground and out of stormwater. We ve pulled together some suggestions to help you get started: Vehicle and garage Use a commercial car wash or wash your car on a lawn or other unpaved surface to minimize the amount of dirty, soapy water flowing into the storm drain and, eventually, local waters. Check your car, boat, motorcycle, and other machinery and equipment for leaks and spills. Make repairs as soon as possible. Be sure to clean up any spilled fluids with an absorbent material, such as kitty litter or sand, and remember: Don t rinse the spills into a nearby storm drain; instead, dispose of the absorbent material properly. ADAMS TOWNSHIP NEWS 5 Recycle used oil and other automotive fluids at participating service stations. Don t dump these chemicals down the storm drain or dispose of them in your trash. Lawn and garden Use pesticides and fertilizers sparingly. When use is necessary, follow the guidelines for the recommended amounts. Also, avoid application if the forecast calls for rain; otherwise, chemicals will be washed into local streams. Select native plants and grasses that are droughtand pest-resistant. Native plants require less water, fertilizer, and pesticides. Sweep up yard debris rather than hosing down areas, and compost or recycle yard waste when possible. Don t overwater your lawn and only water during the cool times of the day. In addition, don t let the water run into the storm drain. Cover piles of dirt and mulch that are being used for landscaping projects to prevent pollutants from blowing or washing off your yard and into local waterways. Also, vegetate bare spots in your yard to prevent soil erosion. Home repair and improvement Before beginning an outdoor project, look around for the nearest storm drains and be sure to protect them from debris and other materials. Sweep up and properly dispose of construction debris, such as concrete and mortar. Use the smallest amount possible of hazardous substances, such as paint, solvents, and cleaners, and make sure you follow the directions on the label. Clean spills immediately and dispose of the waste safely. Homeowners should store substances properly to avoid leaks and spills. Purchase and use nontoxic, biodegradable, recycled, and recyclable products whenever possible. Clean paint brushes in an indoor sink, not outside. Also, filter and reuse paint thinner when using oilbased paints. One way to properly dispose of excess paints is through a household hazardous waste collection program. Unused paint can also be donated to local organizations. Reduce the paved areas and increase the vegetated areas in your yard. Also, use native plants in your landscaping to reduce the need for watering during dry periods. Homeowners should also consider directing downspouts away from paved surfaces onto lawns and take other steps to increase infiltration and reduce polluted runoff.
