1 Vol. 30 No. 8 August 2017 God Bless America The Long Island Single Sailor s Association.. Our 30th Year Dedicated to Sailing and Boating Commodore s Corner Howard Marks It s the lazy, hazy, crazy days of August. Maybe not so crazy, thank God. Those days of running around like a chicken without a head, are petering out. Summer s not done yet, though. We have a few event dates for you to save. Read on. First and foremost we need to thank Holly for hosting the Crab Meadow picnic, our biggest turn-out in years. It was a tremendous success, a success due to her grandiose promotional effort on the phone, organizing helpers, creating an accurate and economical shopping list, taking checks, collecting expense receipts and overseeing the picnic with aplomb. As the song lyric says: Nobody does it better. Outstanding work, Madame. Well done. Thanks so much, Holly. Until next year. NO SOCIAL IN AUGUST. The Board and those club members who attended the last Planning Meeting have decided that, since the attendance at our Social last year in August was poor, we would not have a Social in August THIS year. Did you know that we need 32 people to break even at our Socials? Losing money is not the idea and so, we are canceling our Social in August this year. However: The Planning meeting is ON. It s on August 17 th Theater: Much Ado About Nothing, on Sunday, August 20 th at 7pm. This is Shakespeare at his funniest. We found this to be an interesting presentation of the play, not so much for the play itself, but for the location the Vanderbilt Mansion courtyard, which has a certain charm about it that folks will enjoy, and adds to the play s joie de vivre. You are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy dinner before the show. Seating is provided. You may bring a chair, but it is not needed. Cost is only $ There is no advanced payment. Money will be paid at the entrance when you get there. (See flyer) Birthday Babies: At the Olive Garden on Tuesday, August 22 nd, in Bay Shore. Your host is Peter Aiello. Please call him to reserve by August 18th. Last time it was terrific. We like to eat. Hey, don t forget the Ducks Game. August 28 th. It is The Great American Pastime, BASEBALL, and its only $14.00 a seat. (Check Payable to LISSA) So, take me out to the ballgame. For sure, it s the cheapest sports ticket around. It s also fireworks night. Even though the Ducks box office needs money 1 month in advance to hold a group block of tickets, you may be in luck. So far, as of this writing, the Ducks office has not called Peter about the tickets. And so, you still may be able to get a ticket with the group. I would suggest you call him NOW. Make sure you mail your check to Peter Aiello ASAP. Casey at The Bat : (See flyer) Sunken Meadow Picnic. This will be a lovely event hosted by Patricia Kaminski on Wednesday, September 6 th. It will be held at Sunken Meadow Park, adjacent to parking field No. 4, located just before you cross the bridge to the beach. We ve been there before. It s a great spot. This will be a BYOE event. There are grills and picnic tables and plenty of room to set up a volley ball net or a game of horse shoes. Great fun. And it s free, free. Even though there is no cost, we ask that you please let Patricia know that you will be attending. The Scavenger Hunt will be hosted by Jackie McCann on Sunday, September 24 th. This promises to be a fun event. It s a blast from the past as she says, and I d agree. The Scavenger Hunt, will be at the Seven Quarts Tavern located on Fort Salonga Road in Northport. The Tavern will be the location for the beginning and the end of the hunt. Drinks and appetizers will be served to us for a small fee still to be determined by the Board. Please read Jackie s article about the Scavenger Hunt, posted in The Galley, this month. The final cost, estimated to be around $25.00, will be decided on at the next Planning Meeting at Nocello s on August 17 th. We recommend you attend this meeting. Have dinner, chat. (See flyer) Will Kruysman: Diane Tynebor and I visited Will at his hospice facility in Plymouth a few days ago. Our stay with him was pleasant. Diane wants to say that we enjoyed having dinner with him and that he looks good and enjoyed having visitors. His two daughters and son are there and tend to his every need with love, affection and respect. They help him in and out of his wheelchair and walker. The staff is great. They are very attentive and caring and keep him comfortable. He was not in great pain and smiled as we talked. It was that typical Will Kruysman, easy boyish smile with lots of teeth. LOL He still has that. He always will. It was heartening to see. And through all of this, I heard no complaint about anything. He is, and will always be a gentleman. No one can say how long he has, but his time is short. He is, at last, feeble yet he was able to use his walker, come down the elevator and see us off when we were leaving. God bless him. If you want to visit, do it soon. Hope you are enjoying the seasonable summer sun. See you all Out There!

Mea Culpa! I left 32 cans of Bud Lite for the Crab Meadow picnic on July 22nd. in my car at Carol s house. I had to get the beer, soda and water on Thursday because we had to go to a wedding on Friday. I covered the drinks with a blanket to hide them from prying and larcenous eyes. While moving the beer, etc. from my car to Carol's, the blanket concealed the last case. At this point, let me make an observation and a request. While Holly, other event planners and the Board appreciate the help we get from members at these events - someone has to be in charge of setting up and prepping either for the whole event or parts of it by the responsible member(s). If I had been able to oversee the loading of the coolers one or two at a time, I may have been able to notice "Where's the Bud!" and made arrangements to replace it. Again, I appreciate the help we get from members but in the future let's have a little more organization. Now the fun stuff. On Thursday, July 27 th, 12 LISSA "Crustacean Carnivores" enjoyed Madison Steak House lobsters, plus we were entrained by D.J. Frankie and Karen as well as a few Karaoke-ers. On August 7th, celebrate National Lighthouse Day at the Fire Island Lighthouse. On August 26 th & 27 th, go to the Long Island Maritime Museum's Seafood Festival. I just found out that under the right conditions that oysters are safe and consumable during months without an "R." I would suggest oyster bars and oyster farms during these months. If I can find a good date, I will ask Howard to advise members of an Oyster Bar Happy Hour, probably at the Salt and Barrel in Bay Shore. Some of their oysters are a "buck-a-shuck." COMING ABOUT IN SEPTEMBER Wednesday, September 6th Picnic at Sunken Meadow Thursday, September 7th Social at Nocello s Thursday, September 14th Planning Meeting Sunday, September 24th Scavenger Hunt See flyer for details Special thanks to Jackie for hosting July birthday Babies Dinner, all your efforts was a success. If you have a October birthday coming up and would like to host a dinner please contact me at The club depends an "all" the members to keep it going. Kathy P. Beach Party In the early 1500 s, John Heywood an English writer known for his plays, poems and collection of proverbs, wrote many hands make light work. This was certainly the case at our Crab Meadow beach party on July 22. I asked for assistance and our members heeded the call. There were over 40 people helping to setup. Within a little more than ½ hour we had the cars emptied and the food set up for serving. The coffee was ready (thanks Carol S.) and the coals were hot and the grill was going. Special thanks to the: > Food shoppers: Pat K. and Anita C. > Ice man: Bob H. > Beer, soda, water man: George F. > Schleppers: Skip B., Ken R. and Ralph G. > Grill masters: Skip B., Ken R. and John O. > Attendance taker: Carol R. > Members who showed up early to set up, found needed items from the bins, cut chickens, vegetables, pickles and make the salads. > Clean-up crew, who left the area cleaner than we found it. > DJ: Frank, who helped us burn off beach party calories. Those of you who raised your hands at the Annual Meeting to volunteer to help me if I ran the event certainly did not disappoint me. I would not have been able to run this event without you and I wholeheartedly thank you. Louie Lives! Louie the lobster was very happy this year for not being selected to be the first one into the pot. He has thanked all 14 of us, who showed up at Madison Steakhouse to eat him, for not eating him. (We did eat his brothers and sisters and they were delicious.) Louie lives to swim in the tank for another day reminding us not to give up hope. As there is breath, there is life and the hope for a new day, a better day, a day where all lobsters, regardless of bottom dwelling, have equality of opportunity to grasp the happiness and joy that each new day can bring. We thank the heavenly father Neptune and say: Smother him not with melted butter, but with the golden sun of life and aquatic, bubbly bliss. Long live Louie... the Lobster....Howard Marks
