1 The High Road Monthly Newsletter of the Syracuse H.O.G. Chapter Volume XXIX, Issue 10 October 2012 HOGS Make Manhattan By Debbie Yackel Freedom Tower Photo by Marcella Becker WTC 1 is the lead building in the new World Trade Center complex. When complete, it will rise to 1776 feet. Neither wind, rain, nor cold weather could keep the Syracuse HOGS from New York City. Saturday morning, September 21, Ken and I left to meet the club at the LaFayette McDonalds for the sixth chapter ride to the Big Apple. At about 7a.m., we get off the LaFayette exit of Interstate Route 81, and low and behold, there were already seven bikes waiting in the parking lot with everyone else arriving shortly after. With a short meeting by our ride leader, Bob Davidson, 22 bikes and 27 riders left for a picturesque ride with the first stop in Great Bend, Pennsylvania. After topping off the gas tanks and partaking of some snacks (some of Barb Snyder s delicious cookies) we were off, riding Pa. Route 171 to New York state Route 97 into Port Jervis for lunch. Bob is the master at finding the best winding roads with the world s best scenery. After several miles on state Route 171, when we were about to turn onto state Route 97, Barb Snyder pulls out of line with a stalled bike. In just a few minutes she s all set and off we go again. Arriving in Port Jervis, we stopped at the Erie Hotel for what was a great lunch, the tables were ready and the staff was waiting for us. With everyone s tummy full, we were off to Orange County Choppers in Newburgh, New York. Following state Route 97 was great with its winding curves along the Delaware River. We arrived at OCC ready for a break and toured the facility. Many of their bikes were on display, and out of reach, but nice to see. Time s up and it s kickstands up. Talk about bad luck, Dan Marsh has a nearly flat rear tire. Off he goes to HOGS, Page - 3

2 John Muldoon Director Director s Chatter As our riding season winds down, I hope you are taking every opportunity that the weather allows to get out and take those last rides of the season. I think all will agree that our fall picnic was a great time and that the caterers went out of their way to make us comfortable at our new venue. Thanks to the committee for an excellent party! Meeting Minutes September 16, 2012 Kathy Crouse, Secretary The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. and the membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance. Chapter Director John Muldoon welcomed new members and guests. John also thanked Mike Waters for his part in coordinating and welcoming the Russian s recent visit. Gifts from the Russians will be on display in the HOG showcase. Treasurer: Ron Blakely gave a summary report of the Chapter Checking Account as of the end of August He stated that the balance will change today when the picnic is paid for. Membership: As of this meeting the membership stands at 227. Road Captain: Bill Becker explained that there are two rides today to the picnic. Mike Waters will lead one and John Snyder will lead the other. Please check out the calendar as there are still lots of rides on the schedule. Activities: Peggy and Marie reported that food will be served at 1:30 at today s picnic. There will be a Pig Pot and bike games for all to enjoy. Safety Message: Ken Yackel asks The Annual HOG-O-WEEN celebration will be held again this year on Saturday Oct. 27. There will events and prizes. Bring a dish to pass if you can and COME IN COSTUME if you dare! (Who knows what you will see there, and don t worry Dick, the blood mobile won t be there this year) As always, thanks to those that have been able to help out with the events at PHD. The weather turned out nice for the final demo day of the season, thank you to all of you that were there to make it a success. Enjoy the fall riding season, stay safe, and always remember, RIDE and HAVE FUN! JFM us to be safe during the bike games today. The N.Y. State Troopers will have a booth at the PHD Open House. Free bike safety inspections will be available. Community Service: Lori Robbins tells us the Roadside Cleanup has been cancelled for this fall due to insurance issues, hopefully they will be solved by spring. She thanked everyone who helped out at the MDA Ride. Two upcoming events to consider: Sept. 22 ALS Walk at the Inner Harbor. You can be part of Tim s Team. Oct. 13 is the Step Out Walk for Diabetes. Photographer: Kevin will be taking the group photo at the picnic today. He will be taking portrait shots of you and your bike at PHD s Open House. Webmaster: Chris tells us that you can download GPS information for the New York City trip from the website. Old Business: PHD s Open House will be Sept. 22, Demo Day is Sept. 29. The Sodus Bay Ride will be September 23. New Business: John Muldoon asked Barb Snyder to chair HOG participation in the 2013 St. Patrick s Parade. The Chapter decided to ride or walk the parade and NOT to have a float. Dick reported for Bob on the NYC trip. Leave LaFayette McD s at 8 a.m. Sat. Sept 22. Bring EZ Pass for bridges. All s well. The next stop was the Hampton Inn, Yonkers, New York. (One of us did get Lost In Yonkers, well not really lost but we ll get to that later). Waiting for us at the hotel with open arms was Lori Robbins; she drove her car down earlier (thankfully, but we ll get to that one later too). After a quick shower and a cup of coffee, some of us headed out to the Dinosaur BBQ in Harlem, arriving to front door parking and 7:30 reservations. Again, after stuffing ourselves, it s back to the hotel. As we were approaching Saw Mill Parkway, it starts to rain quite heavily making it hard to see, and the road snakes were terrible. Finally back at the hotel, and as we are ready for some great conversation and consumption of our favorite beverages, Dan Marsh says, Where s my wife? Jen calls and says she slowed down because of the rain and lost sight of the pack and does not know where she is. With Lori Robbins having her car, she and John Snyder take off (in the car) to look for Jen. Little did we all know she was closer than we thought, just two exits away (so she wasn t really Lost In Yonkers). With Dan pacing like a new father in front of the hotel, Jen, on her bike, and John and Lori leading her back, they were greeted by all of us with open arms. After breakfast Sunday morning, with kickstands up at 7:45, off we go on our way home with a motorcycle parade down 3 Broadway in Manhattan. We stopped in Times Square for a few photos and then made our way to the WTC/9-11 memorial for a tour and more photos. The Holland Tunnel was fun (for most, except for everyone riding behind Sully) he just had to let those Rineharts roar and echo through the whole tunnel. (Not that he was the only one. I think my hubby started it). HA HA. So through New Jersey into Pennsylvania we go, stopping at JR S Smokehouse in Wind Gap for lunch. After lunch it was back to Upstate New York and our last stop in Great Bend, Pennsylvania for our goodbyes to old and new friends. Thanks and hats off to Bob for planning and leading such a great ride. Ken and I can t wait until next year to do it again. Photo by Marcella Becker Chapter members gather in front of the Dinosaur BBQ, at 700 W. 125 Street, in Manhattan s Harlem.

4 Minutes, from Page - 2 WTC Memorial. Parking is available. If weather is bad check the BB on the HOG website, we will car pool down. T-Shirt Bingo was Texas, Bernie Antonio was the winner. The pot resets at $10.00 in October. The Pig Pot was won by some lucky member. The meeting was adjourned at 10:28. Respectfully submitted, Barbara Snyder for Kathy McCabe Crouse Marcella Becker, Esq. The majority of our rides on our ride calendar are behind us. It is never too early to start thinking about new places to ride. Remember if you know of a place the group might like to go suggest it for the ride calendar. If you are uncomfortable leading a ride ask someone to co-lead the ride with you or ask that some one else lead the ride. Restaurants come and go, so I am sure we can come up with new places. An easy way to help out your club is to Google restaurants in our area and surrounding areas. If you think you would like to try a new diner then Google Diners in Utica, New York. You can also try best hamburger in Central New York. If something looks good on the Internet take a drive and check out the place for outside parking and inside seating. Make it a party and drag other club members with you. Also, you can look in the local Table-Hopping newspaper for ideas. The theme for HOG this year is It Takes You so please help out your club and start looking around for new destinations for next year s ride calendar. Head Road Captain Bill Becker Autumn s Here... Again! I know it s hard to believe and even harder to accept, but autumn has arrived in Central New York. We had a great riding year with very little rain and above average temperatures. A lot of great rides were lead, and I d like to thank all of the ride leaders, sweeps and especially the Chapter members who came out and supported our efforts. I m sure that next year s schedule will be just as full and hopefully the weather will be just as great. However there s still plenty of time to get out and enjoy the scenery, so take advantage of those sunny days that are left. Remember daylight times are decreasing every day and please keep in mind that this can also be a dangerous time of the year for riding. Leaves, both wet and dry, can create a hazard not to mention early morning frost and ice patches. Please don t forget to keep a special eye out for our fur-covered friends as well. Animal actions can always be unpredictable but this time of the year the dreaded white tail deer is out looking for love in all the wrong places. They won t be thinking safety so it s your responsibility to make sure that they don t find themselves looking for love in front of your motorcycle s path. Cold weather/heated gear can really extend your riding season, both in the spring and fall so think about bundling up and get a few additional weeks out of your year s riding season. It s also time to start thinking about next year... As is our tradition, the 2013 ride planning meeting will be after the February Chapter meeting. One thing we ve heard this year is the desire for some non-dinner destination weeknight rides, and that s a great idea. In the meantime, if you think of a destination or an idea for a ride or trip, please feel free to me and we will place it on the board for next year s schedule. As always Ride Safe. 4 Community Service Lori Robbins September just was not the same without our fall highway clean-up. This is alway a club favorite. Hopefully by spring we will have our insurance issues all worked out. Just a reminder, the annual Step Out for Diabetes is scheduled for October 13, Preregister online or at Green Lakes State Park at 9:00 a.m. that day. The walk will start at 10:00 a.m. All of us know or love someone who has diabetes. This is a personal passion for me, as I have the privilege to work with our veterans, managing this chronic disease on a daily basis. Diabetes is destructive to the entire body, from retinopathy of the eyes to neuropathy in the feet and everywhere in between. There have been so many advancements made in the care for diabetes, but our eventual hope is for a cure. Please come out and walk or donate to support our efforts to raise money to find a cure for the 24 million Americans currently diagnosed with diabetes. My team is Sugar Babies and team captain is D Lorah Robbins. Feel free to join us, start your own team or offer some financial support. Thanks again for all the continued support. A special thank you to Mike Waters for his generous donation! erver?pagename=out_homepage Check out Helping Hounds Dog Rescue. Their mission is to take unwanted, neglected abused, stray or homeless dogs from highs-kill shelters and provide them with emotional, medical, behavioral, and physical support, so they can be adopted into loving permanent homes. If you have a community service event you would like to promote through our club, please feel free to contact me. Ride Safe!

5 Safety Officer Ken Yackel TIRES Well autumn is here and the cooler weather makes me want to ride even more. Sadly I have already heard of people talking about putting their bikes up for the season. With the thought of wet pavement and wet leaves on the road, I start to think about the tires on my bike. Many of us check many parts of our bikes before we take off for a day of riding. Engine oil, brakes, lights, and hand controls. However, if you think about it, there are two things that keep our bikes from being a very heavy paperweight, it s the tires. You should check the pressure in your tires regularly. Colder weather can cause your tire pressure to drop. Even under ideal temperatures, your bikes tires will lose air. Riding on under inflated tires will cause your fuel efficiency to be reduced, the tires to wear unevenly and most importantly, your bike to handle improperly. The best time to check your tires is when the tire is cold before you head out. If you check your tires on a regular basis and find that you are losing air constantly you should consider taking your bike to our sponsoring dealer, PHD and have them checked. One last thought - valve caps, yes valve caps, those 25-cent items keep the valve core clean and free of debris and help keep the pressure where it s wanted. Yes your tires are critical to safe riding, but with minor care you can keep the air in your tires and your bike off the ground. (Some of this information was taken from reports from the MSF). As always, ride safely and have fun. Chapter Website Password: Chapter 3424 Assistant Director Jeff Crouse Most every civic or social organization I have been a part of down through the years has had one thing in common - a nucleus of people who seem to be around year after year doing the work. They are generally surrounded by the other 90% of the members whenever there is a party or other social event. When most people are asked why they don t help out more the answer was usually that they were never asked. Our club relies heavily on the nucleus of members who show up at most every event to help out. I encourage everyone in the Chapter to chip in now and then and offer to help out become part of the nucleus. If you would like to donate more of your time to helping out with club activities or become a Chapter Officer, let one of the Primary Officers know consider this being asked. If on the other hand, you are content to simply enjoy the benefits of the Chapter, that s fine too. After all we are all here to Ride and Have Fun and whatever your level of involvement, the chapter needs you. Membership Steve Moretti Syracuse HOG welcomes the following members who have recently joined the chapter: John Ebert Michael Lenartowicz Richard Nellis Mario Saenz John J. Snyder This brings the current membership to 231 active members. There are no National membership renewals due during the month of October. Activities Peggy Neary & Marie Tubolino Welcome to October! We are reaching the end of the ride calendar, which means cooler rides and beautiful scenery. The Fall Picnic was greeted with a perfect sunny day. We had a great turnout and a good time was had by all. The bike games were as exciting as always. Lots of new players gave our seasoned vets a run, or should I say, ride, for their money. A BIG THANKS to PHD for donating the prizes for the games. This year we welcomed trikes into the games. Next year, we hope to have some games geared just for the trikes. We welcome any suggestions for these games from those of you trikers. We d like to THANK The Camillus Elks Club for their yummy hospitality HOG-O-WEEN is coming soon!!!! Let s start thinking of those winning costumes and ghoulish delights to share. Saturday, October 27 is the date. PHD is the place p.m. is the time. Come and join us for a Trick or Treating good time. Wear your best/scariest costume and bring a dish to pass. Invite your favorite ghoul or guy and all your spirited friends. There will be prizes for the best costume and plenty of surprises. PHD will supply soda and water. Check the website for updates. If you plan to attend the event and will be bringing a TREAT, please contact Peggy (315) or Marie (315) so we know how to set up. Let us know if you re bringing a HOT or COLD treat. Thanks. Ride and Have Fun 5
