WELCOME TO BACK COUNTRY A.T.V. ASSOCIATION, INC THE OLDEST AND FINEST A.T.V. CLUB IN COEUR D ALENE, ID We do it right. COEUR D ALENE, IDAHO April 2014 P.O. BOX 595 VOLUME 14 HAYDEN, ID ISSUE 4 EDITORIAL BY DAN HUTCHINS

Our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Joe Saffeels. Joe had Heart bypass surgery this last week and is doing well. Get well soon Joe and we will see you on the trail. All your friends at Back Country ATV. Back Country ATV would like to welcome our newest members. Welcome Mike Jank and Zack Brock Welcome to the oldest and finest ATV club in Coeur D Alene Idaho. Do we make a difference? I while back I was wondering do we have any impact on the businesses that are our sponsors. As a individual we don t mean to much to our sponsors although every little bit helps a business. Some businesses benefit more from our club rides than others, but every one of our sponsors is in some way linked to ATVs or ATV riding. Some are riders that ride with the club and become sponsors to help the club. Some are Board members of our club. Some sell the ATVs that we ride. And some just become sponsors of our sport. When you think about having over 190 members of our club, going to our sponsors to buy a part or have a dinner or buy a set of tires or go to the fair, even if it is only one time a year, yes we do make a difference. I asked Ann Ware the owner of The Mission Inn in Cataldo what kind of impact our club has on her business and this is what she wrote back to me. ( The riders in the Back Country ATV club have patronized our restaurant for the last couple of years, thank goodness, as they do create excitement and bring quite a bit of revenue into our economy!! They always bring fun, happy riders that love and enjoy the beautiful outdoors we call home! We are honestly grateful for their continued support. I've marked May 10 on our calendar...excited to see all of you, it's been a long winter, thank you!) Ann Ware So do we make a difference to our sponsors? You bet we do, as a individual and as a group. Happy Trails! Dan Hutchins

Business of the month The North Idaho Fair started from humble beginnings over 90 years ago to grow into the five-day, community-wide entertainment and educational event that it is today! Kootenai County s first fairs were held in 1922 and 1923 in Post Falls and Worley, Idaho to showcase the projects of 4-H members. Then, in 1931, a 4-H fair was held at the county courthouse, with approximately 100 members participating. As time went by, the 4- H fairs grew in scope and participation. In 1935, the County Commissioners levied 1/20th of a mill to raise approximately $800 for fair purposes. Two years later, the city purchased the old Mill Grounds for $19,000 and a Fair board was organized. A year later, a building was constructed on that site at a cost of about $3,500. In 1939, an estimated 4,000 people turned out to see the exhibits of H members. As the years went by, barns and events, including a horse show, were added at that site. The big changes came in the early 1950s when the county and city made plans to trade the downtown fair site for a parcel at the cityowned airport known as Weeks Field. That swap of 110 acres marked the beginning of the fair as we know it today. During the summer of 1954, three livestock barns were moved to the site and two Quonset huts were added for exhibition space. The grandstand was built in Pari-mutuel horse racing started in 1965 and continued until Those decades saw the addition of other buildings, including several that were moved from Farragut Naval Station and the Beauty Bay CCC grounds. For a number of years, the fair manager s one-person office was maintained within the County Extension Building. In 1984, the office was moved to the Fairgrounds and a secretary was hired to work regular office hours. In the spring of 1985, the Fairboard recognized a need for some type of year-round facility and took steps to provide 20,000 square feet of indoor, heated and lighted exhibit space. Improvements continued to be made on a yearly basis, and the use of the grounds expanded to include auctions, banquets, wedding receptions, trade shows, science fairs, high school graduation parties and more. Two big facility improvements came when a donation of $50,000 from the Chamber of Commerce sparked the construction of the food court. The addition of the Jacklin Building in 1989 was equally significant. Over the years, the county carved off bits of that original 110 acres for other purposes, leaving the Fairgrounds with its current 83 acres. Currently, the Fair board and management are exploring the possible addition of an events center. The Board remains committed to preserving the North Idaho Fair s rich agrarian history, protecting its current facilities, and exploring new and exciting ways in which its current 83 acres can serve the educational and entertainment needs of a growing community.

The origins of some of our strange customs 1. WHY: Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left? When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right! And that's where women's buttons have remained since. 2. WHY: Why do ships and aircraft use 'mayday' as their call for help? This comes from the French word m'aidez - meaning 'help me' - and is pronounced, approximately, 'mayday.' 3. WHY Why are zero scores in tennis called 'love'? In France, where tennis became popular, the round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was called 'l'oeuf,' which is French for 'the egg.' When tennis was introduced in the US, Americans (naturally), mispronounced it 'love.' 4. WHY: Why do X's at the end of a letter signify kisses? In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually became synonymous. 5. WHY: Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called 'passing the buck'? In card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing, he would 'pass the buck' to the next player. 6. WHY: Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast? In earlier times it used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him a poisoned drink. To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of the host. Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his host, he would only touch or clink the host's glass with his own.

7. WHY: Why are people in the public eye said to be 'in the limelight'? Invented in 1825, limelight was used in lighthouses and theatres by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theatre, a performer 'in the limelight' was the centre of attention. 8. WHY: Why is someone who is feeling great 'on cloud nine'? Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud. If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares. 9. WHY: In golf, where did the term 'Caddie' come from? When Mary Queen of Scots went to France as a young girl, Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scots game 'golf.' He had the first course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment. To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her. Mary liked this a lot and when she returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced ca-day' and the Scots changed it into caddie. 10. WHY: Why are many coin collection jar banks shaped like pigs? Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of dense orange clay called 'pygg'. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as 'pygg banks.' When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a container that resembled a pig. And it caught on. And now you know the origins of some of our strange customs. April 16 th 2014 club meeting winners. The total for the 50/25/25 drawing was $ Don Campbell won again for the second time in two months. This time for $ So it pays to come to the meetings. The pot gained $32.00 and the remaining $32.00 went to the club. The $ pot continues to grow as the names drawn, Luke Miller & Jennifer Watson were not present to win.
