Within a couple of years, many other coal mines were launched and the Town of Louisville was incorporated in Unlike other coal mining towns that were controlled by a single local mining company, Louisville s residents enjoyed a democratic community and worked for a variety of mines. Over the years, thirty different mines operated in Louisville. The Acme Mine produced almost two million tons of coal from mines located directly below the town that exists today. Demand for coal dwindled after World War II ended and the last of the local Louisville mines closed in 1952.

The main building, located in the old Jacoe store, offers a glimpse into Louisville s past with exhibits that contain historical photographs, documents and artifacts including coal mining equipment. The Tomeo House is outfitted in furnishings from the era of the Louisville coal miners.
