2 Well it is a new year. I had a lot of fun last year making out the ride list, and then to bring it all together to make it happen. It is one thing to put it on paper, and another to make the rides have a starting point, making it a interesting ride, and to get everyone home safely. I led many of the rides, and rode over 2500 miles. All of my rides were easy, this year I will add a few more trail rides, and we will ride in some new areas. We will also be riding to some of our favorites like Harrison and Cataldo. When we first start riding in the spring, the weather (snow)usually dictates where we go. Harrison is the lowest point in our area and therefore is usually our first ride. The next lowest area is Cataldo which is usually our second ride. Both of these destinations has a business member that we can stop into for lunch. After the first two rides, a lot of the snow is out of the mountains and we are able to go many other places. Both of the Harrison and Cataldo rides are about 50 miles. This is good because we need short rides to build up our stamina and muscles after sitting around all winter. Many of you have asked me why don t we go riding over here, or over there. Some of the problem is finding an area that is large enough to park several vehicles with trailers. Most of us do not like to ride on pavement as it wears on tires and most ATV s do not handle well on pavement. So we do not want to park too far away from where we are riding. Doug lynch and myself usually preride most of the rides to make sure they are open and safe, we will be looking for more parking areas so we can make our rides. If you have an area or a trail that you would like to ride let me know. We are figuring out the new ride schedule for 2014 and need your input. What was your favorite ride last year, what was your least favorite ride? I hope to see all of you on our rides this year, last year I met and made a lot of new friends, we had some fun times, and I am looking forward to more this year. My number one goal is no one gets left behind, Safely home every time. Happy Trails Dan Hutchins 2

6 DRUGGED BY MY PARENTS The other day, someone at a store in our town read that A meth amphetamine lab had been found in an old farmhouse in the adjoining county and he asked me a theoretical question, why didn t we have a drug problem when you and I were growing up?. I replied, I had a drug problem when I was young: I was drug to church on Sunday morning. I was drug to church for weddings and funerals. I was drug to the family reunions and community socials no matter what the weather. I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults. I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or if I didn t put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me. I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed out with soap if I uttered a profanity. I was drug out to pull weeds in mom s garden and flower beds and cockleburs out of dad s fields. I was drug to the homes of family, and friends and neighbors to help out some poor soul who had no one to mow the yard, repair the clothesline, or chop some firewood, and if my mother had ever known, that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, she would have drug me back to the woodshed. Those drugs are still in my veins and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say, or think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin; and if today s children had this kind of drug problem, America would be a better place. God bless the parents who drugged us. ( Author unknown ) 6

7 The Man Without A Face Years ago a hardworking man took his family from New York State to Australia to take advantage of a work opportunity there. Part of this man's family was a handsome young son who had aspirations of joining the circus as a trapeze artist or an actor. This young fellow, biding his time until a circus job or even one as a stagehand came along, worked at the local shipyards which bordered on the worst section of town. Walking home from work one evening this young man was attacked by five thugs who wanted to rob him. Instead of just giving up his money the young fellow resisted. However they bested him easily and proceeded to beat him to a pulp. They mashed his face with their boots, and kicked and beat his body brutally with clubs, leaving him for dead. When the police happened to find him lying in the road they assumed he was dead and called for the Morgue Wagon. On the way to the morgue a policeman heard him gasp for air, and they immediately took him to the emergency unit at the hospital. When he was placed on a gurney a nurse remarked to her horror, that this young man no longer had a face. Each eye socket was smashed, his skull, legs, and arms fractured, his nose literally hanging from his face, all his teeth were gone, and his jaw was almost completely torn from his skull. Although his life was spared he spent over a year in the hospital. When he finally left, his body may have healed but his face was disgusting to look at. He was no longer the handsome youth that everyone admired. When the young man started to look for work again he was turned down by everyone just on account of the way he looked. One potential employer suggested to him that he join the freak show at the circus as "The Man Who Had No Face." He did this for a while. He was still rejected by everyone and no one wanted to be seen in his company. He had thoughts of suicide. This went on for five years. One day he passed a church and sought some solace there. Entering the church he encountered a priest who had seen him sobbing while kneeling in a pew. The priest took pity on him and took him to the rectory where they talked at length. The priest was impressed with him to such a degree that he said that he would do everything possible for him that could be done to restore his dignity and life, if the young man would promise to be the best Catholic he could be, and trust in God's mercy to free him from his torturous life. The young man went to Mass and communion every day, and after thanking God for saving his life, asked God to give him peace of mind and the grace to be the best man he could ever be in His eyes. The priest, through his personal contacts was able to secure the services of the best plastic surgeon in Australia. There would be no cost to the young man, as the doctor was the priest's best friend. The doctor too was so impressed by the young man, whose outlook now on life, even though he had experienced the worst was filled with good humor and love. The surgery was a miraculous success. All the best dental work was also done for him. The young man became everything he promised God he would be. He was also blessed with a wonderful, beautiful wife, and many children, and success in an industry which would have been the furthest thing from his mind as a career if not for the goodness of God and the love of the people who cared for him. This young mans name is actor Mel Gibson. And now you know the rest of the story of The Man Without A Face. Paul Harvey 7
