EXPERIENCE THE MERCEDES- BENZ 300 SL MUSEUM By Don Penney What: Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Museum When: Saturday June 29 at 11:00 am Where: 902 Enterprise Way, Suite D, Napa, California Cost: $8.00 per person It was the world s first true super car. It was the fastest production car at the time and was fuel injected. A group of Mercedes-Benz 300 SL owners has created an exciting new, single marque museum devoted to the historic Coupes and Roadsters that were manufactured from 1954 to Our goal is to educate the public about these incredible examples of engineering and art. The museum is dedicated not only to the cars, but also their owners (both storied and mundane) and their fabulous racing history. The facility contains not only numerous 300 SL automobiles, but includes photographs, posters, examples of rare optional equipment and accessories, historical information, an informative 15-minute DVD, an extensive reference library and much more. I m not sure how many automobile museums are scattered around the United States but they must number in the hundreds. Current Gullwing Group president Pat Matthews and a small group of 300SL enthusiasts have created the 198 series museum in California s Napa Valley. While not connected to the 600-member Gullwing Group, the 300SL Automobile Museum shares the GWG s goals of preserving the 300SL s heritage and dwindling knowledge base. The museum gives the preservation a solid, tangible base where enthusiasts can experience the cars and their history first hand. A docent will be on hand for the tour. In addition to the display area, there is a Museum store with SL related books, models and art available. OR DAMP AT DRY CREEK By Geoff Paulsen You know, since your air-conditioning still doesn t work, I might not go on your drive tomorrow, threatened my wife. It was the day before the always-popular wine country drive, and a recordbreaking heat wave had been baking us for days. But that night, the wind came up: it moaned and howled through the night and in the morning the Bay Area was cloaked in mist. Can you give me a little heat? my wife asked tentatively as we set out to meet our fellow First Sunday Drivers on May 5, Sure, Honey, I said proudly, cranking up my recently repaired heater. (Such are the little pleasures of driving a 29-year-old Mercedes). After meeting at Santa Rosa Mercedes, 21 cars of hardy souls set out on a drive up Dry Creek Road in Sonoma County into one of California s most beautiful and, with 53 wineries, winesaturated valleys. We passed ornate Victorian farmhouses nestled against forested hillsides, overlooking wineries with their vineyards that were fresh with new leaves. We wound our way up the valley to where it ended at the Warm Springs Dam, where our caravan climbed up into the misty hills to the overlook. From a wooden platform perched on poles, we enjoyed a view of the fingers of Lake Sonoma that wound and disappeared up little side valleys. A lone houseboat ventured out into the mist. We lingered a bit before heading back to the Dutcher Crossing winery where we settled in for some wine tasting and a picnic lunch. Although the weather was a little cool, the occasional sunbeam emerged to warm our skin and caress the voluptuous curves of the Mercedes-Benz automobiles parked in a garden of vines and roses. Ah, yes--springtime in California, Mercedes style. Thanks to this Drive s leaders, new members Roger and Carol Bloom, our Chapter President Gloria Loventhal and to First Sunday Drive Coordinator Shawn Merrill for faithfully gathering our flock and shepherding the rear of the drive. Postscript: On our way home, my wife, Janine and I, decided to swing through Pacifica in order to experience the new Devil s Slide tunnels (as a foretaste of next month s FSD). Surprisingly, during our six hours of driving that day, Pacifica was the only place in the Bay Area we experienced steady sunshine! FILOLI TRIP: BEAUTIFUL DAY By Janet Stewart Migliore We were especially fortunate to have had spectacular weather, with the gardens and grounds in magnificent bloom for our visit to the Filoli Estate located in Woodside, California. For those of you who attended, you now know that this estate is truly one of the jewels of the Peninsula. Our tour began at the Visitors Center with a film detailing the history of this 654-acre landmark that is nestled into the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, overlooking Crystal Springs Reservoir. The film reviewed the construction of the 35,000 square foot house, and the meticulous planting of 16 acres of formal English gardens. Members were then treated to a docent-led tour of the extraordinary home and stunning gardens. William Born, owner of one of the most lucrative gold mines in California, was the original owner of the land. His motto was Fight, Love and Live. He created the Filoli name by combining the first two letters of each of these words. On the day our club toured, and every time I visit, I am thankful to the last owner. Mrs. Lurline Roth donated Filoli, along with an endowment, to the National Trust to ensure that future generations would be able to enjoy the splendor of this special place. She especially wanted the gardens preserved and accessible for public viewing. I would like to acknowledge and thank Larry Stewart Thomas, owner of MB Garage, who generously sponsored this event. I believe these types of member-sponsored events provide our club with additional opportunities for camaraderie. For more information on Filoli, view the web site at 3

4 OFF-ROAD DRIVING ADVENTURE By Peter Judy, Director At Large What: Off-Road Driving Adventure When: Saturday August 3, 10:00am - 3:00pm Where: Peter Judy s Ranch, Old Santa Cruz Hwy, Los Gatos Cost: $20 per person, includes BBQ lunch Who: M-Class, G-Class, and Unimog Owners and Enthusiasts Once again, I have teamed up with Mike Serpe (the leader of the G-Wagon Group and a highly-accomplished off-road adventurer) to design and build a 20-acre off-road track around my house in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Come and test your driving skills on a 1.5 dirt course on August 3, These dirt roads are open to all all-wheel drive vehicles and have many steep twisty areas along with tricky maneuvers through trees. In addition to this is a challenge course for G-wagons with 2 steep hill climbs and a drive over large logs. Great fun to watch for the rest of us. Note: There is a maximum of 30 vehicles for this event. Plan on arriving at 10:00am for orientation and a drive around the course--spectators can get a ride with those that want to drive. We will have a huge lunch of smoked meats, salads, and dessert; you will need to bring your own drinks. After lunch you will be free to drive the course or watch from many points around the roads as others drive. Plan on having a pleasant and exciting day as a spectator or as a driver. For those planning to participate, MBCA requires an insurance waiver that will be provided for you to sign that day. For those of you who want to continue your adventure, you are welcome to bring a tent and stay overnight on the property! As a courtesy, please let Peter know that you intend to join us. If you have questions, contact Peter Judy at prjudy1@verizon.net. 7 ROARING CAMP By Shawn Merrill I m sorry for those all those who missed out participating in this event as you ll most likely will have to wait another 7 years or so it is my understanding that the last time we did this event was back in Awesome is my way of saying I had a great time and you don t know what you missed. While I can t speak for the other 20 members who attended the Roaring Camp train ride and lunch, the day could not have been more spectacular. While my drive to Felton began in Pacifica, I know we had members coming from as far north as Windsor (Santa Rosa area). While I can attest my drive commenced in the typical fog found along the coastline, I never let that deter me from taking down the top of M-E, my E-550 cabriolet (Mercedes E-class). The overcast grey skies and brisk morning temperatures gave way to a sunny clear day with 75 weather. While I am a total ocean person, I did enjoy the drive through the Santa Cruz Mountains. Traffic wasn t to bad considering this was perfect beach weather maybe that s where everyone was at at the beach instead of the mountains. Anyway, Roaring Camp had a special picnic area set up for us upon arrival, all decked out with red/white checkered tablecloths and hoe-down music blaring away. We had a choice of BBQ d hamburgers and chicken or Cesar salad. While you may think so?, what we had for dessert sure did bring back some childhood memories; out came a huge bin of marshmallows! Yes, marshmallows! And already on a stick and ready for us to toast/burn, uh, flambé, to our epicurean delight over hot coals. Now honestly, when was the last time you toasted marshmallows? For me, if I had to guess, about 40 years ago. One member even stated that she had never had a roasted/toasted mello before! Don t know if she liked it or not, but I think we all had fun toasting em in any event. We were all aboard at 12:30pm in our specially designated open top car. For 1-1/2 hrs, the steam train chugged and traversed through the steep hills surrounding Mt. Herman. We even learned from the conductor that there was still gold in the hills and that they still discover to this day remnants of old mining camps (and sometimes miner s skeletons) dating as far back as the 1800 s when gold was first discovered in California. I know I had a great time and want to thank the club for arranging the event. I look forward to participating in many more club adventures and hope you will too. 7
