President s Page: As last month s buzzerbox went to print we had the honour of being visited by Dirk and Trudy Regter in their 1915 Model T Ford. Their visit to Adelaide was just one leg of the Australian tour and furthering another chapter in their 80,000 mile world tour. Dirks brother Sjaak and his wife Coby have supported this venture in the backup vehicle a Land rover. The Land rover was fully equipped with everything needed to keep the T on the road. Four nicer people you couldn t wish to meet. I would like to thank all those members who came out to welcome our Dutch Guests, thankyou to Martin Blanchard and the members of the Model A Club that joined together with us to make this evening such a success. In true Model T Ford Club spirit at the end of the evening several members pooled together to get the club cleaned up in record time, Tony I hope your dish pan hands have healed seriously thanks to each and every one of you many hands did make light work A special thanks to David and Gayl Carver for undertaking the task of accommodating them at Clayton, showing them some of our country side, as reported in David s story. Membership day was held last Sunday. It was an early start for our Treasurer Kingsley ably assisted by his staff Jenny, along with our registrars Bob and Michael. First job for the day was to get the urn on and boiling, Maxine doesn t function very well before her 2 nd cup of coffee and Jenny had brought along the morning tea. It was a smooth process first port of call for the members was to pay their membership and then on to Michael and Bob to process their cars. Approximately 50 members ventured out to renew their membership. Michael was a little slack today and only processed 37 cars, he left Bob to do most of the work processing 40 cars. The BBQ was fired up at about and as the first sausage hit the hotplate the everreliable Jim Trenorden appeared, apron on and tongs in hand to assist thankyou Jim. I thank the ladies in the kitchen who assisted Maxine in the preparation on salads etc. There was a buzz around the clubrooms with much chatter and laughter as members enjoyed their lunch. Michael, Bob, Kingsley and Jenny Thankyou, what you do for our members does not go unnoticed. See you all at the June General Meeting. Trevor Martin President 4

The picture above says it all. In an effort to play host the Club got a generous dose of gemoedelijkheid from four friendly Hollandse adventurers, happy to share their story. (The dictionary translates it as congeniality but that leaves out a lot of what it means.) Dirk and Trudy Regter had conceived the idea of using a 1915 Model T Roadster to raise money for orphan children in Mongolia. Dirk and his son, Dirk Jan, made a trip of 9,000 miles in the Model T from Beijing back to the Netherlands and were able to provide two orphanages in Mongolia. The success of their first trip encouraged Dirk and wife Trudy to plan a world trip. It took until the summer of 2012 to prepare the Model T for the arduous journey. (There is more info on, for those with a technical interest. Just click on Model T.) Their aim now was to complete an 80,000 miles journey across all of the continents except Antarctica to raise money for the SOS children s charity. (You can find information about the work of SOS at During the years 2012, 13 and 14 they travelled through Europe, Africa and the Americas raising money and meeting Model T enthusiasts along the way. Four grandchildren were born during those three years and in 2015 they decided on a break back in the Netherlands to catch up with them. Following an event in Luxembourg, they were in Belgium when their Land Rover and trailer with the T on board was rear ended by a truck with catastrophic damage to the T but thankfully no personal injuries. 8

The next stage of the World Tour would have to be postponed until repairs had been done and 17 were devoted to repairs and improvements on the T. In November 2017, in the port of Amsterdam the Model T and Land Rover support vehicle were loaded into a container and shipped to New Zealand. Dirk and Trudy and their support team took off from Christchurch on the 1 st of February 2018 for an extensive tour of the south and north island before shipping the vehicles on to Brisbane Australia. A new support team joined Trudy and Dirk for the trip down the east coast of Australia. On the 22 nd of April they made their way into South Australia. After an overnight camp in the Coorong they were met by a group of Model A club members in Tailem Bend. With all of the modifications on the T they made good time and they took the opportunity to take a tour through the Finch Restoration A good number of club members were there to greet them as they arrived at the Club Rooms. The two vehicles were arranged facing those who were arriving to take part in the welcoming party, which had been arranged. Whilst modifications had been made to ensure that the Model T was capable of making the long journeys planned, most walked round the Tourer noting the faithful restoration work that had been done. Apart from the electric fan in front of the radiator it was only by lifting the bonnet and having a good look under the chassis that members could marvel at the engineering skills that ensured greater running speed and safety features that had been made. There was a wonderful atmosphere as people spent a long time outside walking around the vehicles and getting to know our visitors. Sjaak and Coby of the support team were creating a lot of interest in the Land Rover. I was excited to read that Coby s surname was de Wit, my paternal grandmother had that as her maiden name. That meant she was family! We had a lot of fun with that over dinner. workshops in Mt Barker. Tony Russell met the convoy at the old Eagle on the Hill and led them the rest of the way to our clubrooms. 9

The back was Dirk s workshop fitted with fuel, tools and spares. On top there was a canopy that could be folded out to provide a bed and tents and other camping equipment ensured that the adventurers could make camp each night. Tea and coffee was available in the club rooms but most enjoyed being outside in the warm autumn afternoon and talking. Every now and then there would-be mechanics ducked around and under the T for another look at just what a special vehicle this was. All who were still outside were thrilled to see Nancy Bennett come walking gingerly on Allan s arm to come and join in the fun. It was great to see her at a club event after her long recovery from the injuries she suffered in that very serious accident. Good on you Nancy! As the sun had set and it was starting to get cool we made our way back into the clubroom. Someone had gone to a lot of trouble to set up the room with festive glasses and fancy tablecloths. Maxine Martin, our secretary, and her band of competent helpers had been busy indeed. The smell of barbeque had us sitting down quickly. I made sure to sit with Coby and Trudy as I was enjoying the opportunity to talk Hollands with them The food was brought to the tables and judged delicious, with plenty for all to go around. The Model A members stayed and joined in the happy occasion. Our 50 th anniversary wine added to the celebration. Dirk showed us slides of his first trip in 2007 and filled us in on the trip through Europe, Africa and the Americas. David Carver on behalf of the Model T Ford Club of Australia was able to give Dirk $380 in donations to their cause. Paul Van Ruth 10

A FEW DAYS WITH MODEL T AROUND THE WORLD TOUR We had a short time with Dirk, Trudy and his brother Sjaak and his wife Colby. We met them at the club rooms and had a great night with a good meal organised by Maxine and Trevor and with help from other club members. Dirk gave us a presentation of their travels around the globe. It was getting late and I told Dirk that we had organised for him to stay with us at our holiday house at Clayton. I suggested that he store his Model T just around the corner from the clubrooms and travel by modern to Clayton, but he wanted to drive the Model T - all the way back up the freeway to Mt Barker and then down to Clayton. We arrived at 9.30pm. It was late, and they had had a long day and thought they would head straight to bed we shared a few red wines and a chatted awhile eventually heading for bed around 11.00pm. Next morning up at 7.30 am to have breakfast and work out what they wanted to do for the day. They had run out of internet and needed to change their phone to Telstra, so they would have better service across to Western Australia and beyond. We took them to Pt Elliot to the bakery and had a doughnut and a Farmers Union Iced coffee. After some more chitta chat we headed off to the beach at Horseshoe Bay, and then on to Victor Harbour to see about the internet and phone problems. With the phone sorted we filled the four-wheel drive back up car and jerry cans full. Heading back through Strathalbyn and on to Bleasedale Winery for a wine tasting and a look at the museum they have on site. We were there about an hour and they purchased some wine and we headed back to Clayton. David and Sue Dunn joined us for tea, I cooked two legs of lamb and Gayl made roast vegetables and hot bread rolls. With a little time before the meal Dirk used the time to service the Model T. 11

A FEW DAYS WITH MODEL T AROUND THE WORLD TOUR (cont) After tea we got back to drinking a lot more red wine and a 2 litre cask of port. Got to bed again about 11.00pm. They again had a good night sleep and in a real bed. Gayl cooked them a hot breakfast of eggs and bacon and toast with Vegemite that went down well. No time for delay - We had to get going as they wanted to get as far as they could that day (as they found the ferry was not running from Wallaroo.) We finally left Clayton after celebrating Cody s 60 th birthday. Got on the road at 9.00am and drove back to Mt Barker and back through Nairne and on to Birdwood for lunch. Trevor meet us and took photos in front of the Museum we all had lunch together at the bakery across the road again we shared a birthday cake to celebrate Cody s birthday. On the road again we headed for Willamstown and on to Gawler we navigated our way through the township of Gawler stopping at Roseworthy service station they filled with fuel and we said goodbye and safe travels. It was a short stay but we all had a fabulous time enjoying each others company. We are going to The Netherlands next month and we will catch up with Sjaak and Cody. As this edition goes to print Dirk and Trudy have arrived safely in Perth and Siaak and Cody have already headed back to the Netherlands. David and Gayl Carver 12

On behalf of Model T Ford Club Members I have requested some information to be clarified by DPTI through the Federation. Michael Gordon Member has a 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe on historic registration. He has fitted seat belts in the front but nil in the rear. If he takes his wife & grandchild for a drive does the law insist he has the Grandchild in the front by way of the lap seat belt or child restraint Federation Reply A: No one (even my usual source) can give me definite answer general consensus is in the approved Child Seat in the front OR If the owner is worried fit mounting points in the rear of the car and put the child seat in the rear. On the 9/3/18 our member went to Modbury Services SA to register his T Ford after his 3 year historic registration was due for renewal. He was told he needed an MR334 form before he could pay for registration. He went home & paid on line without a problem. Another member tried to register his T Ford 5/4/18 AT Sefton Park as its 1 year registration was almost up and was told he needed an MR334 form before it could be registered. His renewal form was peculiar, as it did not have a fee shown on it for re registration. He did try to do it online at home after the morning refusal but was not able to do so. When he first approached the Services counter the lady told him that things had changed in the last month and an MR334 form is now required. Our member did ask at the counter if they wanted to photocopy his log book as proof of historic registration but that was rejected. I checked on line Thursday 5/4/18 Easy Reg showed his car as Historical and expiring 6/4/18.There must have been some notes "behind the scenes" on the computer system for them to ignore the historic vehicle notation. As this has occurred recently at 2 of the Services SA branches it is not a localised incident. Neither club member received a letter from Services SA regarding any other requirements. It sounds like a new procedure is afoot! Please clarify Federation Reply A: This is partly to do with the migration of our Club Reg scheme onto the registration and licensing database a few years back. For most vehicles on the scheme we have the club they are a member of associated with them on the system. However at the time of changing over there were about 2500 vehicles where we couldn t match them up with a club. Initially we just left these but recently we have implemented a change to our system so that a club can simply be nominated where it is not recorded on our system without requiring an MR334. We sent a detailed instruction to Service SA about the change and I believe we also sent something to the Federation about it and possibly you sent something out to members? So, while people may be asked what club they are with if it isn t recorded they should not be asked for an MR334 unless they have changed clubs. We will ask Service SA to remind staff about the correct procedure in these instances and can you please keep letting us know if anyone has the same experience so we can follow up with the Centre involved. 14

Federation Meeting 22 April 2018 MR 334 Forms are still being accepted by Services SA at present but it is recommended that you apply for new books via your Secretary on club letterhead. Suggest you do via (plate enquiries) as the letters get lost in the DPTI System The extension of up to 500 metres is now automatic BUT remember it is only from your residence where the car is garaged and not for filling with petrol along the road or for mechanics workshop manoeuvres. New Federation Members Tinman Cruisers Club now accepted. Holden Dealership has applied for club membership and will be discussed at the next meeting. Treasurers Report = $ $ % Motion moved & seconded for a Restoration Grant of up to $3000 for those juniors aged under 30 years old at time of application. Apply prior to 1 st July to Treasurer of the Federation. Logbooks have been issued in record numbers. Twice as many in the last 12 months as the previous year. Your Log Books can now have Engine number and plate numbers amended by your Club Registrars without having to issue new books. These are the only corrections permitted by the Registrars. Previously it was a new book. New Log Books to have the old Log Book number written on the front cover. Log books cannot be valid for any more than 3 years, ie membership years with no grace period. Our club year commences 1 st July each year. Federation Tour is in 2020 to Albury Wodonga and we need help by volunteers. One member has nominated for our but we need more help. The organisation is only from here to the border as the interstate Federation/clubs have done the rest of the work so it is only this states leg. Federation web site will be up and running in next 3 weeks with your Secretary s getting an when accessible. Bay to Birdwood Board is in the process of transferring all funds to the History Trust of SA Inc. Working capital is being transferred at present to allow the event to be put in place for this year. Final transfers probably will not be completed till the end of September. No monies come from or belong to the Federation and the existing profits/monies that have been made over all previous year s events. Under the existing constitution monies are to be transferred to like institutions if the Bay to Birdwood Board is ever dissolved. 15

Lizzie Ladies EATING IN THE FIFTIES Pasta was not eaten in Australia. Curry was a Surname. A takeaway was a mathematical term. A Pizza was something to do with a leaning tower. All potato crisps were plain, the only choice we had was whether to put the salt on or not. Rice was only eaten cooked in milk, as a pudding. Calamari was called squid and we used it as fish bait. A Big Mac was what we wore when it was raining. Brown bread was something that only poor people ate. Oil was for lubricating, fat was for cooking Tea was made in a teapot using tea leaves, These were never green. Chickens didn t have fingers. Eating raw fish was called poverty, not Sushi. Healthy food consisted of anything edible. People who didn t peel potatoes were regarded as lazy. Indian restaurants were only found in India. Cooking outside was called camping. Muesli was readily available it was called cattle feed. Water came out of a tap. Not a bottle. But the two things we never, ever had on our table in the sixities? Elbows, Hats and Mobile Phones. 20

Federation Meeting 22 April 2018 (cont) Motorfest will be sending out s (& snail mail) to all previous Motorfest entrants, with the last event on 1 st Oct. The Uncle Arthur film night will be at Mitcham Cinema. No Variations anymore as the new scheme refers all variations as under the existing rules & regulations for light modern vehicles. General Business. DPTI has had several queries regarding the re-registration of Historic Vehicles being asked for MR334 forms. This is not correct and Services SA has got it wrong, if they insist on MR334 forms being produced for existing same club registered vehicles. Some members have received phone calls and others may need to produce their log books as proof of Club Registration. This is due to about 2500 vehicles not being recorded properly when being migrated to the new computer system. Where a club has informed DPTI of an owner of a vehicle no longer being a financial member as of 1 st Aug. then the Department will chase up these vehicles that should no longer have Historic Registration. Police have fined a driver for not recording in their log book of different drivers for that day. The driver was the first to drive then another driver signed the log book when they drove. Another driver drove the vehicle (signed) and then the first driver for the day drove the vehicle again. The original driver did not sign the log book again as they had signed at the start of the day so did not regard it necessary to sign again. The police fined them for driving an unregistered vehicle. This case has not gone to court at this time. Approximately 5 car clubs have been audited by the DPTI. This has been due to some reported irregularities. The Department has not put in place a system of audits on all clubs at this time. Next Meeting June 17 th anyone that wants to attend please contact Michael Gordon as he will not be able to attend on this date 21

The Club was awaiting approval from Council for installing a sign on the fence advertising that the clubrooms are available for use. CLUBROOM MAINTENANCE COORDINATOR S REPORT: Paul van Ruth thanked those members who attended the Working Bee on Saturday 14 April The carpet was cleaned on 25 April HISTORIC VEHICLE REGISTRAR S REPORT: Michael Gordon encouraged members to attend the Club Membership Day on Sunday 27 May 2018 at the clubrooms. Michael also advised that membership renewal was required before commencing the vehicle registration process and that vehicle inspections and Statutory Declarations were no longer required as part of that process. FEDERATION REPRESENTATIVE S REPORT: Michael Gordon advised that the Bay to Birdwood management by the History Trust of SA was now in train. As a consequence of the above, the balance of any B2B funds held by the Federation would be transferred to the Trust. It had been identified that some persons were experiencing difficulties renewing their historic vehicle registration at certain Services SA offices. Basically, their renewal form had no registration fee included and they were being asked to present an MR334 form. This situation had resulted from the Registrar of Motor Vehicles having no record of that vehicle being registered through a recognized club. This was a consequence of data submitted historically on any MR16 form (being a predecessor form to the MR334 form) had no requirement for listing a club. Any member having such a problem is advised to re-present themselves at the Services SA office with both their current Membership Card and current Log Book as evidence of their club membership. Log Books can now be annoted by a Club Registrar for any vehicle having a change in either its registration number and/or engine number. That is, a new Log Book is not required for such changes. Log Books are only valid for three consecutive club membership years. On any one-day entry in a Log Book, all drivers are to sign and in the order of their respective drive. If any driver drives more than the once, then they are expected to sign for each occurrence. The Federation is seeking anyone interested in organising the next Federation Tour to Albury-Wodonga. The 2018 Motorfest was in the planning phase and letters/ s are being sent out. The 2018 Model A National Rally is being held in Adelaide and immediately follows the B2B event. 23

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING (cont) The $3k grant scheme for vehicle restoration projects by persons under 30 years old was continuing. Drive an Old Car Day is held in May and members are encouraged to drive. The All Steamed Up Festival in Mannum is again being held in 2018 and will be on the 17 & 18 November. Michael announced that he is unable to attend the next Federation Meeting at 7pm on Saturday 16 June at the CCC Clubrooms and invited someone else to represent our club. BUZZER BOX REPORT: Further Cover Stories are required please. Further Member s Corner articles are required please. Michael Gordon asked if, in his absence, someone else could prepare the Events Calendar for the July and August editions. PAST EVENTS: Annual Run to Waikerie on 6, 7 & 8 April 2018: it was reported as a fantastic club event and various comments about aspects followed. It was moved by Paul van Ruth and seconded by John Scorgie that Trevor and Maxine Martin be thanked for their organising efforts and the various other helpers - an applause followed. A lesson learnt was not to transport any meal in the Tail End Charlie vehicle. The President mentioned that an Organiser and/or suggestions for a destination are sought for the 2019 Annual Run. McLaren Vale Vintage and Classic event on Sunday 22 April 2018: it was reported that it was a nice day and that there was a lack of parking at the host winery. The winery was seeking feedback. Tour Around the World reception arrangements: The President outlined the arrangements that occurred between Monday 23 April and Wednesday 25 April The Regters (being a party of four people and two vehicles) arrived early at the first pre-arranged rendezvous point at Tailem Bend and as a consequence, a hastily organised visit was arranged at Finch Restorations in Mount Barker to fill in time before arriving at the second pre-arranged rendezvous point at Eagle on the Hill. From there, Tony Russell in his Prefect escorted the travelling group to the clubrooms, arriving at 3.45pm. A Reception Evening was held with a BBQ tea followed by a very interesting talk by the Regters about their worldly adventures driving their Model T. Being a fund raiser for the Regter s cause - SOS Children s Villages - those present and the club made a total donation of $380. The Regters then drove to the Carver s holiday house at Clayton Bay and then spent two nights before travelling to Birdwood Mill and onto Roseworthy for lunch on Wednesday.
