Maple Street Harrisburg, SD rushnews@midco.net THE WAY I SEE IT From the Editors Desk In the process of publishing this newsletter I m always looking for last minute news items. But the news that I received this morning regarding the death of Mick Osterman was not what I wanted. Mick was what I call a friend. I have not been around this club as long as many of you, but Mick made me feel welcome from the first time I met him. He was a strong link in the workings of this organization, having served as President and always being there to help. He and Carol were always there if I had a question and he was a very nice man. I will miss him!

4 Meet A Member Charlie Mower Hot Springs, SD Charlie never lived on a farm and says he doesn t know anything about farming. But he has several IH tractors at his place. We probably should start at the beginning. When Charlie was about 9 years old, his father purchased a small acreage; then sold off lots. While not farming, they had Farmall s around to mow and split firewood. This was 40 years ago and he has been working with and tinkering with the A and B that passed to him ever since. Charlie was employed in an Auto Repair Shop for 35 years. He has been married to Brenda for 12 years. He has 3 adult stepsons who live in easter SD and Wyo. Brenda grew up on a farm near Ramona, SD. Charlie says that she liked those green tractors. When Charlie purchased his H, the oldest stepson helped him get it the 5 miles home in 15 degree weather. Charlie drove the pickup towing the H with the stepson steering the tractor. The stepson was almost froze by the time they made the trip. That s devotion. Charlie joined the club to get to know other people that liked, had knowledge and experience with the IH tractors. Currently there is a 51 Super A, a 41 B, a 53 Super C, a 44 H and 49 M in the collection. Charlie says, I really enjoy driving these tractors in parades and working on them. The M that I have never ceases to amaze me with the power it has. Right now I am just trying to keep them all running. Hope to have a TD someday. He continues, I would think that most of the club members are either active or retired farmers, so I wouldn t have much in common other than my love of the IHC equipment. Charlie, I think that pretty much explains the whole deal; we like IH equipment of all kinds. (see page 6 for a phono) Some of the farm equipment manufacturers are playing around with electricity in tractors and equipment. There are battery powered tractors and diesel electric tractors and electric powered equipment Maybe they should look at IHC in the mid 50 s and see what happened then with high cost of equipment. Not a lot of sales!!! ALL GOOD THINGS START WITHIDEAS BY EDITOR Ed Luckhurst has proposed an idea for a display at the 2020 RPRU. Of course this depends on the show being awarded to Chapter 21, but we are confident and the idea needs to be checked out. When construction was started on the big damns in SD, a lot of men and equipment were mobilized to accomplish the task. It probably would be a good guess that some of that equipment had IHC stamped somewhere. Do you know anyone who worked on these damn projects? This search is going to have to extent beyond the membership of Chapter 21. I think what Ed is looking for is stories, first hand or maybe second hand about the work, equipment and anything related to building the damns. Then, if you find a story, it becomes even more interesting if there are pictures to accompany the words. I am sure that somewhere out there are some interesting stories and pictures, but we will have to dig and we will need everyone s help. I remember going with my buddies Dad on a trip to Pierre in maybe 55 or 56 to look at the project. We ended up driving up the west side of the river to a hilltop somewhere just west of the damn location. Work was progressing on moving a hill in what I believe is the emergency overflow. We were looking down a good distance at pretty good sized group of crawlers, scrappers and related machines. I could not tell what brand they were but there were a lot of crawlers pulling cable scrapers being pushed by another crawler. As soon as the scrapper was loaded, the pusher slowed slightly, spun 180 degrees and pushed another scrapper going the other direction. It was like a well choreographed dance. So, if you think of anyone, or anyone that might know someone, see if there is a story or picture that we might use. Right now we don t need the actual hard copy, but need to know where to get it. Send info or ideas to Ed Luckhurst at st Ave, Garden City SD or Alan Albright at th St. SE, Watertown, SD I am going to ask the one guy I know that might have been part of the project. THANKS Rushmore Roundup page 4

This IH association began when he was born. Richard s parents started farming in 1946 in Union County, with a H & M. He was the first of 5 children and as he got old enough to operate a tractor he started to plow and help with the hay stacking. They milked and raised hogs. As they got older, his sisters took over some of the hay stacking. His dad purchased an 806 and 5 bottom plow. Sometimes they plowed with 3 tractors, covering 80 acres quickly with 10 bottoms. His father and uncle Stanley were Farmall Red clear to the bone. Richard says, In 1989, at my fathers retirement auction sale; I threw in a bid of $350 to get things started on the 1940 H. No one else bid! I m glad today that I did that. The H still serves him well with chores around the farm. Richard purchased a C and 15 to 20 years ago purchased a lineup of equipment from Lee Rist for the tractor. He has several projects to work on. His brother, Ordell has the H that their grandfather, Oscar Weks owned. Richard enjoys taking the two H tractors and the C with equipment to parades in Alcester. A 1967 Farmall 656 gas is his main chore tractor, which makes all his tractors 50 years old or more. Richard lives in Alcester with his wife Brenda. They have 4 daughters, 4 son in laws and 9 grandchildren. They hope to keep the Farmall tradition going for a long time.
