Volume 38, No. 1 Jan-Feb-March 2018 Inside This Issue: View from the Bridge Officers & Staff 2018 Board of Directors 2018 Winter Cruise Museum Excursion International Night Greetings from the Marine Committee St. Paddy s Day Party Dart League Results Coming Events VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE Commodore Peter Trunfio Greetings from the Bridge, and welcome to the 2018 season of the Harlem Yacht Club. The club was incorporated on October 23, 1883, making this our 135 th season. That is a milestone that all of us, as well as all our predecessors, should be very proud of. Most people think that because all of the boats are tucked away for the winter, that this is the quiet time at the club. Nothing could be further from the truth. This is the time of year that the foundation for the coming season is laid. The first official event of the season was the January Membership Meeting, followed by International Night, which you can read all about later in The Log. HYC once again had a booth at the 2018 New York International Boat Show (Jan ). This is the event where we plant the seeds that grow to become new members in the spring. It s also an opportunity to let those boaters who may be passing by City Island this summer know that they are always welcome to stop at HYC on their way up or down the Sound. Thank you to all who helped staff the booth during the five day show, especially those who helped set up and breakdown the booth before and after the show. As a follow up to the Boat Show, we have also had two Open Houses (Feb. 24 & March 18). The third & final Open House of the spring recruiting season is on Sunday, April 22 nd. If you have any friends or family who might be interested in membership opportunities at the club, please feel free to pass along this information. Better still, bring them to the Open House! Those of you who have been to the club recently may have noticed some strange looking watercraft stored on the property. On March 1 st, the Harlem Yacht Club officially became the new home of the Fordham University Rowing Team. It is a privilege to have a Division I rowing program from a prestigious university in residence at HYC. This winter, however, has been particularly hard on the waterfront. We had two weeks of deep freeze (and the ensuing thaw and ice floe). In addition to the usual winter weather, we ve been battered by not one but four Nor easters. The T-dock at the end of our walkway is in desperate need (continued on page 2)

The walkway itself is probably good for another season or two, but it too will need some serious attention before too long. To that end, the Docks Committee has been hard at work this winter addressing the short-term and long-term maintenance and repairs necessary to keep the docks in top condition. Also on tap is a long-term Capital Plan for the waterfront. By the time you read this, the HYC Darts League will have hosted its Annual Awards Dinner, March 24. [Editor s note: see p.8 for results] The opening round of the 2018 darts season will be on Friday, April 6. If you are interested in participating, please contact Walt Tyler at wctyler@gmail.com. No experience necessary. There will be a Fleet Racing Seminar by J/24 Fleet 61 at the club on Saturday, April 14 th. All are welcome. Launch Service is ([tentatively) scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 21 st. Invitations for the 135th Going into Commission (May 19, 2018) will be going out soon, so watch your mailbox. Prior to GIC we will have a brace of Work Parties to help spruce up the clubhouse and the grounds before the season starts. We will also be working to finish up the gazebo and the railing on the dock. While the restaurant doesn t officially open until after GIC, Chef Anne has already put on a couple of Supper Clubs to give members an opportunity to use their club during the off-season. There is also an upcoming Spring Fling: Tapas Night scheduled for Saturday, April 14 th. It s getting warm just thinking about launches and commissioning ceremonies. The point is, the season doesn t simply start on May 19 th. This 135th season started on January 1 st when the board took office and started building the foundation for the coming year. Unfortunately, much of the burden for running and maintaining the club falls on too few of the members who work tirelessly to make the club work. If you are wondering how you can help (besides simply paying your dues on time and spending all of your chits), then just raise your hand. We have numerous committees that are always looking for more help. All you have to do is ask. Welcome to the 135 th season of the Harlem Yacht Club! Respectfully, Peter M. 3 HYC 2018 BOARD OF DIRECTORS The new Board of Directors officiated over the Membership Meeting which was held just before International Night. Serving on this year s Board are: (first row) Doug McCormick, Frank Cavacini, Peter Trunfio, Bob Fleno, George Morstatt; (second row) Brian Hendricks, Justin Lewis, Dan McElwreath, Anthony Rosco, Matt Stainback, Peter Green, Dave Sexton; and, at left, Todd Cook. Titles appear on page 2. Appointees: Nancy Curtiss, PC Jeep Califano, Evelyn Schneider, Roy Smith, Walt Tyler, PC Mark Cetta, Dr. CJ Li, Roger Karlebach.

Gene Black, Ilene Karlebach, Rhoda and Lloyd Hirsch and Roger Karlebach 2018 Winter Cruise Museum Excursion By Roger Karlebach, Fleet Captain This was the least well attended of the eight annual Harlem winter cruises, but those who attended enjoyed the beauty, the fellowship and the food. Perhaps it was scheduled too early in the winter and found some of the "regulars" in warmer places. Note to self: Schedule next year's excursion in March! Or perhaps Fairfield CT was a bit far for some of us. And last-minute flu cancellations also did not help. The J. Russell Jinishian Gallery is a treasure trove packed with beautiful and interesting original paintings and sculptures of nautical and marine subjects. A few were created in the 1800's but most are from within the last few years, though many of these are of historic scenes, some painted in the style of the period. All were fully researched by the artists as to every relevant detail such as the wind speed and direction at the time of the sea battle in question, whether that battle was won by naval cannon or by boat speed in America's Cup races. Next stop was a tapas restaurant in Fairfield to talk about what else? Boats! The 2018 season is getting closer. For those who missed this adventure, our gracious host: sailor, artist, art historian and entrepreneur, J. Russell Jinishian, will be displaying a selection of his collection in New York City in or about June. We will get details as to the exact time and place before that event for those who may wish to attend. J. Russell Jinishian Gallery J. Russell Jinishian

International Night By Lesley Brough The first event/party of 2018 International Night took place at the HYC on Saturday, 20 January, immediately following the membership meeting. The club was festooned with flags from many countries, which contributed to the international feel of the evening, and more than 65 members and guests provided a huge selection of dishes, featuring food from nearly every corner of the globe, including Indian, Greek, Thai, Italian, Irish and many more. As the membership meeting wrapped up, the guests began sampling a wide variety of appetizers and then Board members served the soups, salads and entrees. Desserts and coffee rounded out the evening and our regular HYC bartender, Shane, ensured that everyone had a suitable beverage to accompany their food. Judging by the comments made about the selection and quality of the food, it would appear that no one left the HYC hungry that night. Special thanks go to the decorating committee (PC Anthony Rosco, George Morstatt, Peter Green, Philip Swanton, Jill Rubenstein and PC Bobby and Joan Richardson) and to all those who helped in the kitchen on the night itself PC Bruce and Diane Lages, PC Bobby and Joan Richardson, Laura Fleno, Rita Tyler and Joan Schulman. If I ve forgotten anyone, my sincere apologies. A big thank you also goes to the membership for contributing such an assortment of wonderful dishes. Without you and the effort you put in, there would be no International Night, so many thanks to you all. And, a final shout-out to those members who couldn t attend the event, but who contributed to the International Night Fund. Much appreciated! In that regard, I am pleased to report that just over $1,300 was raised and tentative plans are afoot to make some upgrades to the ladies locker room.

GREETINGS FROM THE MARINE COMMITTEE Dan McElwreath, Chairman What s this?? Does there seem to be an almost imperceptible greenish tint in the trees? Does the sunlight somehow seem different, softer perhaps than the icy glare of winter sun? And is the breeze now carrying a softer, earthier aroma that the winter cold had been smothering before? And if anyone still needs proof that spring is beginning to push winter away, take a look in the HYC yard and you ll see some of the early launchers eyeing up their boats, and planning out what has to be done to get in the water. So, here is the launching schedule, beginning with a few dates later in April, and continuing thru June. One thing to notice, though, is that we don t have too many 8-foot-plus tides that come during daylight. So, if you have a deep draft boat, grab the good tide early. A couple of reminders, as we begin launching season and you get carried away by the excitement of prepping and launching your boat: 1 Roll up the shrink wrap and put it in the corner of the farm, not in the dumpsters. 2 If you sand/paint your bottom, put a tarp/plastic down. If using an electric sander, attach a vacuum hose. 3 If you use a paint tray, make sure you sit it in a tub or shallow container big enough to capture all the paint if you tip the tray. 4 Check with TWO C s at least TWO WEEKS before your launch to be sure that your mooring and bridle is there. Remember, sometimes the mooring is there but for some reason the bridle is not. Make sure everything is ready. Two C s is pretty responsive, but they get very busy for the next couple of months, and they try to do groups of moorings in the same field. 5 Make sure you are paid up with the club. We cannot launch your boat if you have unpaid bills. 6 The day you are launching, be at your boat 2 hours before, ready to launch. We start getting boats lined up two hours before high on the launch day. And try to have one other person who will be on your boat with you when you launch, so you can pick up your mooring. 7 Check that the planks that your keel is resting on are bolted/tied to your cradle, so they don t float away when you go in. 8 If you painted your bottom, put a piece of wax paper between the poppets and your hull so the boat doesn t launch with the poppets stuck to the hull. Yes, it happens that the boat can pull the poppets out of the cradle. And, yes, we have had entire cradles pulled off the trolley car because the poppets were stuck to the hull and were rusted into the cradle posts. 9 Finally, remember that your cradle has to be folded on the same day that you launch, so we can get it stored and out of the way. You probably have seen how crowded our yard and farm are, so we really have to get the cradles out of the way as we get the boats lined up for launching. Best wishes for a great sailing season, and thanks for your cooperation.
