2 The MAY meeting 2015 When I arrived to the meeting with Jane and Chris in our share vehicle from Alligator creek Charles had already set out the chairs, Rex was organising tables and Keith had a table of treasured items at the ready. 6 people were glad to receive the ordered book of Mangrove plants written by Norm Duke - I was one and it makes a great addition to my growing plant-book collection. Again Charles had brought a plant - this time a lovely Hoya australis. Val had a dish of tubes of very young Heamodorum coccineum which Charlie had grown from seed collected on one of their adventures. We shall be interested to see how they go as yet they seem extremely slow. Maybe the seeds were planted at the wrong time of the year. Peg gave an interesting talk on two different families each of which figures significantly in Western Australia. This is the district where Peg has spent many years doing a lot of the ground work helping to investigate and identify plants in a new area as she learnt the ins and outs of Native plants. Charlie and Val had been for another adventure to the North-west. Again they went looking for the interesting plants which survive this very dry weather. Val showed a few of their photos some of which will feature in a later newsletter. Flowers and plants for SHOW and TELL arrived in armfuls, boxes, pots, buckets, paint drums and wrapped in newspaper. Most go on a display table for us to admire. Note the concern shown by John Donahue for the welfare of this flower as he handed it to Charles specially boxed up. I don t think that either Charles or Rex were being rough but really you can t be too careful. YABBA in the NORTH At the meeting Rex outlined the progress which the 2016 Conference committee have made so far. Some of the committee have since met at Ian and Robyn s place and had a delicious luncheon to help with their chinwag. The venues and dates have been finalised. Many of the logistics of moving 50 people about were discussed in detail. Please let Rex know the kind of assistance you are prepared to give. -More on this at our next meeting. SAD NEWS We were saddened to learn of the passing of Kath Greenaway who was a founding member of SGAP Townsville. Always a wealth of knowledge and great ideas, she will be sorely missed. 2

3 Outing in MAY:- AIMS creek (now to be called Cleveland creek to avoid confusion). Charlie and I cheerfully zoomed past the top of the AIMS creek thinking that the creek in question was further on. Fortunately in my rear-vision mirror I saw Janice and John pull in and realised my mistake. By 9.05 we were only 10 ( Janice, John, Keith. Rex, Sally, Beth, Jane, Ian and Charlie). Albeit we assumed that everyone who was coming was there so we set off down the freshly mowed track to the Sandy river bed. Walking along the river bed was quite comfortable, the only difficulty really was climbing over a log and then later climbing under a large fallen tree. We did not see many flowers at this time, however various fruits were seen and we noted a few interesting vines. After about an hour or so we stopped for a cuppa and those who wanted to walk back did so and a few kept going down to the Mangroves. 3

So With this in mind I have numbered the following pictures and the names. I would like a couple of the experts to provide the answers for next month s newsletter. See how many we can get correct. 4

Q Sapindaceae Harpullia ramiflora R Sterculiaceae Kleinhovia hospita Charles showed us three lovely sprays of orchids. Each was a hybrid and, interestingly, two of the sprays, Dendrobium Superbens, were from the same parents (Dendrobium biggibum x D. discolor) but looked quite different, one with wriggly pink flowers(s) and the other with nonwriggly white(t). I did not record details of the third spray, Dendrobium Lasianthera (U), which was a more complicated cross. 5

6 The Evolution of our Newsletter by Rex Grattige This branch has been producing a newsletter every year since its inception in These started as a monthly issue and towards the middle of the second year it became bimonthly for a year or so. At this point it is worth noting how they were produced- bearing in mind that around copies were needed at this time. This was done by typing the document onto a wax Gestetner sheet, no mean feat in itself as any typos had to be corrected using a correction fluid, not unlike nail polish and retyping it, or XXX it out and have the error visible to the whole world. The copies were then made using a hand operated machine into which the sheet of type was fitted and as many copies as were required cranked out, of course if you were using a double sided sheet two wax sheets were needed for each page. Swapping these over usually entailed the operators getting covered in ink at some stage. But things never stay the same for long! The next innovation to come along was a photo copier. You still needed a type-written page to copy but, if you were a bit sneaky, you could cut and paste parts of another article on to your sheet and save much typing. Up until around 1982 the newsletter was just called The Newsletter of Townsville Branch of SGAP. Then in April 82 it was given the name of The Native Gardener. This appeared in ordinary type at the top of the front page. I should mention that up until about this time the pages were printed on foolscap size pages which are a bit longer than A4 pages. This has made scanning old copies of the newsletter a slow operation as you have to scan most pages twice and crop them to get all the information recorded for the future.there was a membership of around 90 then. We are now entering the computer age and around 1985, some members may have had access to PCs at work, and the marvels of the computer age became available; being able to make errors and correction as you go along, made it so much easier. The newsletter also took on a different look; it now had a header, which also changed its appearance as the technology advanced. Feb 87 the 1st header appeared, line drawings were also added. Oct 87 the second header was used once. Then in April 90 when the second header was used consistently. This was a line drawn effort. The availability of various fonts in word processing programs bought another change in 1990, this header has remained unchanged until around April 2007 when our Abelmoschus logo was added and the Header being coloured green instead of black. The addition of digital photography and colour printing was introduced in Feb Most of our Newsletters are produced in PDF format and ed to members now, only around 4 members have not yet entered the 20 th century let alone the 21 st. :-) At this time we have complete sets of Newsletters from 1991 but are still missing a few from earlier years, so if members have any from before, we would like to borrow them to scan and add to our archive. 6
