Welcome to new AMIA CEO Robert Gray We would like to welcome former Board Director Robert Gray as AMIA Chief Executive Officer. Robert will bring a wealth of experience to the role and will give AMIA direction and leadership to help the industry reach its full potential. Robert will join Trevor Dunmall, Industry Development Manager, and Claire Gilmartin, Communications Officer, in the AMIA team. 2 Han Siah and Kieren Brown elected to AMIA Board The AMIA AGM was held in Ayr on Thursday, 15th Mango Export workshops Asia Fruit Logistica May At the AGM, Han Siah was elected to represent the Northern Territory / northern Western Australia district, and Kieren Brown was elected to represent the far north Queensland / north Queensland region. Han and Kieren replace outgoing Board Directors Robert Gray and Marie Piccone. Upcoming Events At a board meeting following the AGM, Gavin Scurr was re-elected Chairman of the AMIA Board and Brett Jackson was elected Deputy Chairman. 30th July 2014 Mareeba Field day, Walkamin Research Station 8th August 2014 AMIA Export workshop, Brisbane 3rd - 5th September 2014 Mareeba Field day AMIA, in conjunction with Mareeba QDAFF, are hosting a field day and workshop at the Walkamin Research Station, on Wednesday 30th July. Growers attending the day will have an opportunity to inspect the Small Trees mango trial site, the new variety selection block, as well as find out about the outcomes of the research trials and the latest industry news. Presentations will include: Asia Fruit Logistica, Hong King 14th - 16th November 2014 China Fruit and Vegetable Trade Fair, Beijing May th Annual Mango Conference, Darwin. HAL Review Final Report recommends transition to grower-run body Click above to download the latest edition of Mango Matters The Final Report from the performance review of Horticulture Australia Ltd (HAL), undertaken by ACIL Allen Consulting, has recommended HAL transition to a grower-run organisation. The recommendation was supported by HAL members at a at an Extraordinary General Meeting, held on Friday 20th June in Cairns. The final report can be viewed at: Fenthion update In late May, APVMA released its recommendations on the future use of fenthion. As anticipated, many of the previously registered uses have been removed, but APVMA have recommended the post-harvest treatment in tropical fruit with inedible peel be retained. This includes mangoes, avocados and other fruit with an inedible peel. There will be new requirements on the disposal of dip / spray waste. Research leader, Andrew Macnish, presented information of the outcomes last season s resin canal research and the plans that will see both NT DPI&F and QDAFF lead research activities this season / 2014 season production The 2013/14 mango season produced over 50,000 tonne of fresh mangoes (domestic and export), which equates to 7.2 m trays (7kg equivalents). Production was lower in the Northern Territory, with production estimated at two million trays, compared with over four million trays for the previous two seasons.

5 Exports up While it was a mixed season for many growers, export volumes rose. Export data, sourced from Horticulture Australia, show that exports rose to 10% of production in 2013 / Volume exported increased 14% from 2012/13 to 5,263 tonnes, with an overall increase in value to $20.05 million, an increase of 26% compared with the previous season. Value per kg also increased by 10%. Hong Kong remains our prime market, with 45% of exports. Mango Export workshops AMIA hosted the first of two workshops focused on building industry export focus on Friday the 20th June. The second workshop will be held on Friday 8th August. Representatives from industry, exporters and Federal and State Governments attended to discuss the issues impacting our export potential. The second workshop will focus on developing strategies to address those issues.
