2 From the City... F Y I s First day for chipping in the spring is scheduled for Monday, April 21st This is your chance to spruce up those trees and bushes....branches /limbs (NO Leaves please) need to be left by the curb by 7am Monday morning. Future Dates: June 23rd Sept 15th Oct 27th Flushable wipes are NOT your sewer systems friend The City of Slater is asking everyone PLEASE do NOT flush wipes down the toilet. In recent years, the use of products such as pre-moistened flushable wipes have been advertised as a way to feel cleaner and fresher but most don t know they have caused damage to wastewater systems across the country and right here in Slater! Even though these products are advertised as flushable, and they may go down the toilet, they are not breaking down sufficiently to go through the sewer system. Resulting in clogged pipes and jammed pumps!! This also includes: toilet cleaning pop off pads, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product that may be advertised as flushable....thank You!! Wow! Our City Parks and Shelters are getting busy We want your event big or small to be a success! Don t get stuck without a place to have your family gathering, birthday party, or class reunion! Please call City to make a reservation for our outdoor shelters and facilities within our City Parks. ~ Thank You! Midwest Recovery will be coming through Slater again this year on June 23rd. This is a chance for Slater residents to get rid of old appliances, mowers, and electronics for FREE. They pick it up off your curb! Midwest recovery does require pre-paid stickers for tubed screens and monitors You may purchase these stickers at Slater City Hall beginning...today. Visit their website midwestrecoveryofiowa.com for more details and a complete list of items they take for free.

April s book discussion will take place on Thursday, April 17 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The selected book is The Expats by Chris Pavone. Overview: In the cobblestoned streets of Luxembourg, Kate Moore's days are filled with playdates and coffee mornings, her weekends spent in Paris and skiing in the Alps. But Kate is also guarding a tremendous, life-defining secret one that's become so unbearable that it begins to unravel her newly established expat life. She suspects that another American couple are not who they claim to be; her husband is acting suspiciously; and as she travels around Europe, she finds herself looking over her shoulder, increasingly terrified that her own past is catching up with her. As Kate begins to dig, to uncover the secrets of the people around her, she finds herself buried in layers of deceit so thick they threaten her family, her marriage, and her life. - Barnesandnoble.com Early-Out Program - March 5 and April 2, 16 & 30, 1-3 p.m. Card Making - Thursdays, all day, for all ages. 8 Slater American Legion Post News submitted by Dr. Steven Kruse A Legion Post meeting met on Monday, January 27. It was decided to hold future meetings starting at 7PM, rather than 7:30, as previously. The Auxiliary has also moved their meeting time up to 7PM. Some upcoming events include a chili supper sponsored by the Legion Auxiliary on Tuesday, March 4, at the Slater Methodist Church from 5 to 7 PM, and a turkey tenders dinner sponsored by the Legion on Sunday, April 13, at the Nelson Park cabin from 5 to 7 PM. The Slater American Legion, while not as troubled as some American institutions seem to be, does have some problems. Membership in the Legion consists of war veterans, and so members fall into age-related categories based on time of service. The oldest group comes from WWII and Korea (overlapping to some extent). The number of these veterans is thinning, and those remaining are well along in years and less active and, in many cases, less able to be so. Next in line are Vietnam vets, a large group, but who may not look back on their military service with much enthusiasm and have similar limited enthusiasm for Legion affairs. The third group of Legionnaires is the youngest, veterans of military actions over the last fifteen years or so, mostly in and around the Middle East. They have a lot of enthusiasm and energy, but most of these people are working and have limited time available for the Legion. While no designated seating area, divided by aisles, are needed to separate these groups, they may have different attitudes toward the Legion and different expectations from Legion membership. An aging membership makes for difficulties in nominating and electing officers, or running some Legion programs. Legion meetings today tend away from recounting military adventures and reminiscences, and incline towards community service. The Legion meets on the fourth Monday of each month (except December) in the Nelson Park cabin at 7:00pm (NEW TIME). The next meeting April 28. The Legion Auxiliary meets the first Tuesday of the month in the Slater Senior Center at 7:00 PM. The Junior Auxiliary meets on the fourth Sunday of each month from 2 to 4 PM in the Senior Center.

9 Slater American Legion Post 260 Turkey Tenders Slater Log Cabin Sunday April 13th 5pm-7pm Adults $8 Kids (10 & under) $5 From Mary Beth s desk, Slater s City Clerk / Administrator The FY 2014/15 budget was adopted at the regular council meeting on March 10th. The City of Slater was able to hold the City s tax levy to $ dollars per $1000 of valuation. This is about 1/2 a penny per thousand less than the budget we are currently operating in, and within fractions of a penny per thousand that we have operated at since fiscal year 2007/08. During these past seven years, we have replaced or reworked most of our public works equipment, as well as adding a street sweeper and chipper. We have also implemented an Economic Development loan program which has helped bring the City businesses like the Nite Hawk, Sheldahl Crossing, and rehabilitated the building at 421 Main Street. During the past two years, the city partnered with Ballard School for a major upgrade to Nite Hawk field for new lights and a scoreboard. Because of these efforts, Ballard High School Baseball will be playing on this field for the next 20 years. The FY 2014/15 budget includes replacing a vehicle for public works and 1st responders, replacement counters and cabinets in the concession stand, a new roof for City Hall, significant repairs to the cemetery driveway, parking lot expansion at Grimm Park and the replacement or refurbishment of a fire truck. All of these project are funded by the Local Option Sales Tax that is collected on purchases made in Story County. Come on Spring!! We are anxiously waiting for warmer weather so that we can start working on the pool. Just like the previous summers, the pool lost water during the 2013 season. Since the freezing and thawing can potentially have adverse effects to the pool, we wait to look for and address leaks each spring. The significant loss of water we are dealing with each season effects our ability to maintain water temperature, and of course effects heating and chemical costs. As you may remember, the City of Slater was in litigation with the pool engineer and contractor for several years regarding the poor design standards and construction methods used in building our facility. While the City didn t get a large settlement, the maximum available funds were obtained from these companies and are used when these repairs are necessary. Each year brings new operational challenges, but the City will continue to do the best we can to operate this facility as efficiently as possible. We realize the benefits of having a pool in our community and the enjoyment it brings to its users. We currently anticipate opening day for 2014 to be Monday, June 2 at noon.

10 Slater Historical Plans Exhibit Aprons the Ties that Bind To celebrate the Quasquicentennial in 2014, SAHA is planning an exhibit of antique aprons. We would be pleased to include them in the display. Call or stop by Heritage Hall on Thursdays 10am-2pm.
