4 From President s the President Report CLUB MEETING WEDNESDAY 8 TH FEBRUARY It was both a happy and sad first club meeting this year as we bade farewell to popular club stalwarts John and Mary Overend, and also presented them with a well deserved WMOC Life Membership, a club they have both given their all to for many years. With Mary s full support, John has held almost every position possible within this club, including convention convenor x2, and trust me, that s a huge task once, let alone twice! John and Mary are emmigrating south to Oxford, a wee settlement north of Christchurch to be close to family (read grandchildren) and will no doubt continue their love of Mustangs with the Canterbury MOC once they are set up and organised. Best wishes and thank you both for your treasured friendship and enthusiasm, you will be missed by us all. Colin Reed 4

5 Quarterly Round up From the Editor Hello people Well I personally am glad to see the back of 2016 with all the losses in the entertainment world and the bizarre political shenanigans in the US, I m looking forward to a more serene Summer has been a mixed bag weather wise, but there have been loads of things to do and see in your Pony. I am thrilled to see new members in the club and with mid sixties fastbacks no less. I look forward to getting some member profiles out there so we can get to know our newest club members and their cars a little better. Here s the early morning line up at Motorama

10 LEADFOOT FESTIVAL 2017 The magic of Rod Millen s Leadfoot Festival held at his pristine farm at Hahei was again evident as thousands of spectators from all over the world gathered to witness a line-up of amazing vehicles and mingle with some true legends of motor sport, not least Al Unser Junior who was over from the USA to guest drive a 1915 Stutz, the actual car that came third in the 1915 Indy 500 (at an average speed of 140.0KPH) and second in This treasured vehicle belongs to the Southward Museum Trust and was on loan for this special occasion. Rod Millen was aboard a 1906 Durracq, the same car used in this event by Rod Dixon last year. Another internationally famous rallying family, the McRae s from Scotland were also present, father Jimmy along with sons Colin and Alister, in fact Alister won the event after being runner-up to Rhys Millen last year. He was driving the ex Possum Bourne 1998 Subaru WRX STI rally car (850 HP). As I reiterated in print after last year s event, Leadfoot is a must for all true petrolheads, the noise, the smells and the sheer rarity of the displays and personal is irreplaceable anywhere in the world. As an added bonus, drivers of classic, vintage, muscle cars, hotrods etc are allocated a special huge trackside carpark which also doubles as an impromptu car show. I personally spent almost 2 hours checking out some fabulous vehicles before crossing the track to the pit area which is open all day to the general public truly unique. 11 Central Muscle Cars at Hampton Downs There was plenty of action at the KENNY SMITH day at Hampton Downs, with heaps of mustangs turning out in the muscle car races, but Fords weren t First On Race Day. It was an Aussie Pontiac Firebird that took line honours with a pack of Mustangs snapping on his heels. Warren Connett 11

15 Brett and Penny s Americana 2017 This was our 1 st trip to Americana and we found it to be a really well organised event with 100 s of unique and special cars along with heaps of friendly people. It cost $160 to register the car, plus driver and one other which wasn t too bad. We found a Motel close to the city and only 5 minutes from Devon Street for about $130 per night. We drove down from Taupo on Thursday afternoon so we could participate in the Friday cruise and the Saturday street parade. Friday morning about 800+ cars gathered at the TSB stadium by 8am (with breakfast available for those who wanted it) then everybody got ready to depart to Stratford and Hawera at 10am. It took about 1 hour for all the cars to get out of New Plymouth heading south, but it was worth it to see so many amazing cars cruising down the highway. As we drove along, people had lined all the highway s and the town streets and were all waving at every car as it went by. All the houses, fences and people had American flags. The cars stopped in formation along the streets of Stratford at about 12pm so all the locals could come and view the cars. There were food stalls and bands playing while we were there, It was a great sight. About 1.30pm we headed down to Hawera where people also lined the streets and waved flags. Some schools let the kids come down to the roadside to wave at the cars as they went past. As we arrived in Hawera we parked in formation again. A Stop Go mini drag strip was organised so some cars could have a quick blat and try to set the best time (for which a prize was on offer). We left Hawera about 4.30pm to head back to New Plymouth. As we arrived we were all diverted down Mangorei road which winds its way through the suburbs down to the oceanfront. What an amazing sight it was to see thousands of people lining the streets and having street parties and bbq s as the cars slowly cruised by. We did a smokey burnout on one of the streets which made all the kids happy. As we arrived in the city, all the cars cruised around for about an hour while all the people sat in bars and cafes. The streets were packed as it was a beautiful warm evening. In the morning about 9am, everybody drove their cars to Devon street to be parked on display until about 2pm. More than 850 cars were parked on the street which made for an amazing sight. All the bars and cafes were open and full of owners and locals. There were bands playing TV crews going around videoing some on the really unique cars on display. Saturday night consisted of a dinner, speeches and a prize giving ceremony for best in class etc. Overall (thanks to the weather gods) it was a fantastic trip. Even we only had 2 whole days there, it was a great experience and I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone with an American car, with the main highlight being all the support from the locals who lined the streets all day, everyday. 32 This 1969 Shelby GT500 is for sale. The Previous owner painted the car British Racing Green, but the correct colour is Black Jade. It s all original and has been in New Zealand for decades. Would make a great project for the club if someone has a spare 80k or so... 32

33 What s On? What s On WMOC Meeting Night - Now held at the Town & Country Club in Morrinsville at 382 Thames Street. Meeting starts at 7.30pm the second Wednesday of every month except January, bring your partner and meet for a meal first at 6.00pm with other club members. We will from time to time have a guest speaker or a quiz night, so please come along and join in. You just might get the Treasurer to shout you a drink! Monthly Cafe Runs - These will now be occurring on a regular basis and are being organised by Clare Bayly. 33

34 What s On? What s On Southern Muster 38 th National Mustang Convention Invercargill Labour Weekend 2017 Now that our Convention is behind us, it is time to start planning for next year s one in Invercargill. When SMOC hosted their first Convention in 2011 it has to be said that it was a resounding success. Everyone who went had an amazing time. Who wouldn t have a great time on a two week road trip in the Mustangs! We have put together an itinerary that sees us not wasting too much time in the North Island so we can do a wee bit of Tiki touring in the South Island over the planned two weeks we will be away. We will have over night stops at Ohakune, Blenheim, Hanmer Springs, Tekapo, Cromwell and arriving in Invercargill on the Thursday before Labour Weekend. Once the Convention is over, we set off again staying 2 nights in Queenstown, and then 1 night each in Timaru, Kaikoura, Wellington and Taupo. Along the way we will stay mostly at Top 10 Holiday Parks which have accommodation choices to suit your budget from tent sites right through to motels. Where there is no Top 10 we will choose probably motels and will be aware of price in our choices. We are in the process of looking for interesting lunch stops and activities that will ensure we have an amazing holiday. We will arrive at Hanmer on our way south in plenty of time to enjoy the hot pools, and we will revisit Peter Jackson s superb WW1 museum at Omaka just outside Blenheim on our return journey. On our Tekapo night, I am looking at booking us into a night time session at the Mount John Observatory I hope we have some star gazers among us! We will of course take in the CMOC day at Highlands Motor Racing track in Cromwell, and my sister has already invited the lot of us to her house for a BBQ dinner that night. In Queenstown there will be time to do any number of activities the world is your oyster here! When we pass through Oamaru on our way home, we will time the journey to stop for lunch at their historic area which includes the steam punk quarter. We have chosen great cruising routes, including Benheim to Hanmer via Murchison and the Pig Route between Queenstown and Oamaru - countryside that many of us will not have driven on previously. That said, we have not got a drive time of more than 4 hours 45 minutes on any one day. This allows us to stop and see anything that takes our fancy and also allows someone to have a car issue, get it fixed and catch up by night time. We plan to leave on Saturday, 14 th October 2017, cross over on the ferry on 15 th, arrive in Invercargill on 19 th. Queenstown will be 23 rd and 24 th October, crossing back on 27 th and arriving back in Auckland on 29 th. At this point, I would like to receive expressions of interest so I can have a good idea of how big our group will be which will help with getting good prices for accommodation. Closer to the time we will contact the ferries and get a booking number. When we have accommodation and ferry details, you will need to make your own bookings quoting the details I will give you. I will also contact the other clubs to see if they want to travel with us. In 2011 by the time we left Christchurch, we had a convoy of at least 30 Mustangs for the trip to Invercargill and it was great fun!
