From the President How s everyone doing? Hasn t the year just flown by, Xmas has come and gone again and we are all another year older. Something different to complain about instead of the weather all the time. I trust Santa was kind to you all and you all had a relaxing break over the new year. Please take it easy out there on the roads, we want to see you all again this year along with your cars. I would like to welcome our most recent members to our club, Howard & Irene Tiddy with their two cars, Red 66 Coupe, Red 08 GT and Wayne VanDerPoel with his Red 69 Mach 1. I would just like to thank everyone for their help and support leading up to the convention and on that weekend also, well done. The 34th Mustang Convention was a huge success both formally and financially and even the weather wasn t that bad. Congratulations to all those that received awards for their mustangs and putting on an impressive display on the show day with nearly fifty Waikato Club cars. It has been great to be able to wind down and relax a bit after the convention and concentrate on our normal club activities. We attended the USA Day in Tauranga just recently with a good turn out in support of our neighbouring club BOP and then the Straggler's Charity Car Show in Cambridge. To finish the year off we had a relaxing Xmax BBQ at Maxine & Alan Rees Place and I would like to thank them for their hospitality. There is plenty of activities coming up in the next few months, the norm for this time of the year. As always our friendly reminders will keep you informed. Just to finish off with and for those of you that don t know, the Waikato Mustang Owners Club turns FORTY this year in July and we intend to celebrate. Cheers Stu 4

From the Editor Hi Everyone What a fantastic year it has been, there has been so much go on for all of us and I would like to thank and congratulate everyone on the effort and help that we have received with our 34th Waikato Mustang Convention, this is one of our biggest events that only comes around every six years for us and this has taken a lot of preparation, hair pulling, and a few drinks, (afterwards of course). There were so many stars that shone in our club that did way more than they were originally given to do. I would also like to congratulate all those that did well at the convention as well, it s not easy trying to help as well as prepping your cars for show display, so well done to you all. I think we have also found our number one gifted raffle man, (Lee Mahoney), sorry Lee you are never going to escape this job again you do it to well, sorry Kaylene you still did a fantastic Job. I know I had an awesome time and had managed to fit in a cheeky spa as well, to find the time I don t know, lol. We would like to all pass on our condolences to the Shackleton family for the sad loss of Sam Shackleton, he will be a great loss, I know he has touched a lot of peoples life's. I know that this year that the Stragglers Car Show was moved to Karapiro due to maintenance at the lake in Cambridge, a couple of our guys attended this and said that this was probably one of the best turnouts that they have ever seen because of the space layout and also the entertainment on the lake and that maybe because of the success of how well it went it may continue to be held there every year. I'm sure that everyone knows now, it is very sad to hear that Colin Reeds 1973 Mach 1 was stolen, so if all club members and clubs please keep your eyes peeled for the registration, (351MAN), highly unlikely this will still be on it, but for those that are not familiar with Colin s car there will be a photo in the back of the magazine. I had a nice 10 days off after the convention as I had just taken possession of my house on the 31st of October. I jumped into renovating it straight away, no it wasn t a holiday really, a working holiday, but I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I moved in on the 10th and have had some great support from some of our club members as well so I would like to say a special thanks to you as well. I would like to also thank Allan & Maxine Rees for sharing their home with us and allowing us to have our Waikato Mustang Xmas Day there, it was a great relaxing day, Jim and Bob did a great job on the bbq, and a few laughs which you will find out later. For those that wanted my Pineapple Snow recipe that I took to our Xmas do it is in issue Jan/Feb I hope everyone has had an awesome Christmas break and have kept safe and had a fantastic New Year, so for all of those that I have not caught up with HAPPY NEW YEAR I hope it has treated you well leading into the New Year. Now you might all be wondering why you did not receive an October/November issue, well as we were all busy with the convention, I had not received anything from anyone for the last two months so I couldn t really pull something out of thin air, so we agreed we would make this a four month issue instead. I wish to thank the people that have come forward with their stories, jokes, photos, recipes as well, this makes it a lot easier on me to compile a magazine when I have material to work with, so please keep it coming in. I know that there has been a few events go on over the Christmas break so I look forward to anyone that wishes to share their travels. I look forward to catching up with everyone soon, I hope everyone is refreshed and ready to go for the new year to come. Your Editor JO :) 5

All Ford USA Day 17 Nov 2013 Mt Maunganui What a day for a car show! blue, blue, sky, very little breeze on a very warm summer's day. A small group of enthusiastic mustanger's took off for a leisurely cruise over the picturesque Kaimais to Mt Maunganui. Luckily for us someone had remembered to throw in a gazebo to keep us cool. After some difficulty parking up we set up our shade and we all pulled out our new convention picnic sets, SNAP!!! Nice to see a lot of new members turning up for the run, awesome! Then it was into snacks and the usual bevy of drinks. This was a far better idea than trying to clean cars, enough of that with the convention eh! A lazy day was had by all, talking laughing, eating and perusing cars. Our group came away with 3 prizes: Irena and Jim Leadbeater - Best original wheels for their Shelby Nicky and Jan Telford - Best interior for Mach 1's Lorraine and Tony Palmer - Second for modified car, Evita A very enjoyable day! Regards Mary 6

A Few Problems Again John? Kind of feels like deja vu, good ole Barry helping out 8

Stragglers Day Barry came over in his 69 Ranchero for a few brewskies and a late supper and stayed the night. The next morning I loaded up the trunk of the 60 Buick with the usual picnic beverages and we headed off to the meeting point to wait for the rest of the Mustang Club. Unfortunately half an hour went by and only one other car turned up, Colin & Gay Johnstone in their 2011 Mach 1. The three of us travelled back out to Karapiro Lake Domain to the Stragglers Charity Car Show which always seems to fluke the perfect weather. The show was moved to Karapiro Lake because it had out grown Lake Te Ko Utu and later that day I heard car numbers had increased to over 900. Not long after we arrived we ran into Colin Reed. Unfortunately he was traveling on foot, cant help feeling sorry for the poor old bugger, but he still had a smile and he was wearing his Mustang Convention shirt. We wandered around the domain looking at the cars and caught up with the other people we knew. While we were wondering around I also saw Neil Tyler s Yellow 70 Boss, which is the only other members car there that I saw on the day. The rocker cover racing proved to be a crowd entertainer. There was a large number of classic boats and caravans on display also. Some boats were launched into the lake and cruising around. Next year the event is going to be at the Karapiro Domain again and I think there will probably be more classic boats attend and take advantage of the lake, as well as the caravans with the campsites being available, people will be able to camp the night there. Maybe the event will grow into a whole weekend show. I caught up with my Cambridge car buddies and a few stubbies were emptied during the afternoons hot sun, when the beers ran out and everyone else had gone, it was time for us as well, fortunately it wasn t far to drive home. Sorry the rest of you missed out on such a great day. Cheers Stu 9

Barry Featherstone There's something about Ford's 1969 Boss 429 Mustang. It has that brooding malevolent look of a hunting animal lying in wait for its prey. The 7 litre-engined Boss 429, one of the rarest and most valued muscle cars around, was developed in the late 1960s as Ford sought to compete with the famed Chrysler Hemi 426 in the Nascar Sprint Cup Series. Homologation rules required at least 500 cars to be sold to the public. Ford decided to house the engine in the Mustang body. The standard engine bay however, was not wide enough to cope with the big block. Ford contracted specialists Kar Kraft to modify the body and do the fitting. Extensive modifications included reducing the width of the shock towers in the engine compartment and modifying the suspension to provide sufficient room to fit the massive power plant. No air-con was offered, the battery was transferred to the boot and the bonnet opened to fit a manuallycontrolled air scoop. The Boss 429 is conservatively rated at 280kW and 610Nm of torque. The engine has aluminium heads and O rings instead of head-gaskets. Hamilton Mustang fan Barry Featherstone plans to have his example on display at this Saturday's National Mustang Convention at Claudelands in Hamilton. Featherstone is a character. Born in Cambridge, a sometimes Hauraki Plains farmer and earth moving contractor, he's covered more than 250,000 kilometres in the past nine years touring the US in a 10 metre trailer. His background in cars, racing and engines goes back into the 1970s in stock cars where he became expert in building small-block Ford V8s. He's a Ford man through and through and has owned a 36, a 48, levered a V8 into a Mk4 Zodiac, and bought an original XYGT Falcon Shaker in the early 70s. He bought his first Mustang - a in Brisbane and drove it across the Nullabor to Perth, stayed for a while, rebuilt the engine and drove it back humming along at a steady 160kmh until he met speed restrictions, at least one that was enforced, in New South Wales. Farming and construction were doing well and Featherstone had considered what to invest in, tossed-over the idea of houses but realised that meant dealing with messy things called "people". He decided to pursue his passion for cars instead. The Boss 429 arrived from Atlanta in 1999 and is equal in value to a reasonable house anywhere but Auckland. Featherstone is 99 per cent sure it's the only one in New Zealand. The car had previously had two owners in the US and is in original and untouched condition. It hasn't tasted Kiwi rain in the 14 years it's been in the country. "It was a big call to buy. I spent a lot - but that's the pain of a good investment." His Shelby GT500 was an import to New Zealand in the 1980s and has a certain notoriety. 12

It was stolen and barged to one of the Hauraki Gulf Islands and painted matt black. Repossessed, it was eventually offered for sale in Christchurch and bought by Featherstone who flew down and "drove the sucker home." His most recent acquisition was a 69 convertible Shelby GT350 which he bought from an Indianapolis seller over the internet sight unseen in 2004 to drive with the Great American Pony Drive - a US Mustang club. "The owner held it for six weeks, he picked me up at the airport. We went to his shop. "I paid for it, filled it with gas and drove to Nashville." Then followed an extended circumnavigation of the US with 30 other Mustang owners. Featherstone has a bucket list and has a Mach Super Cobra Jet to find which would give him the top of the range when it comes to collectable Mustangs. He's still looking, and maybe this year will be lucky. The Mustang fan plans to present three of his cars, the Boss 429, GT350 an GT500 at the 34th annual National Mustang Convention public show to be held on Saturday at the Claudelands Events Centre from 10am to 4.30pm. 13

National Mustang Convention Labour Weekend 2013 Hi folks Well the time has arrived when all the hard work has finally come together. When all the team on Thursday night were packing approximately 300 goody bags, (well that was fun). We finally realised the convention was here. Thank you very much to everyone, you know who you are. Friday was a blur with all the surrounding town cars arriving, there were blue ones, red ones, black ones, green ones and even trailer ones. Wow what a site, 120 cars plus. Now we have to fit them all in, well in comes the team of sardine fitters, Jim and the boys, what a job, what a team. We photographed them from top to toe and fitted them side by side, even leaving a space for Archie s car but not to be, oh well how sad. Thanks to Leisure line for picking up the ropes and concrete bases which we hired from another club for next to nothing. There was a special display to mention, which is Barry Featherstone s great tribute to the mustang. Great to have him and his cars in the club. Thanks to all our sponsors tables and their fantastic displays. I really did like the retro shed display with all the old school radios. Saturday night was an early night for some until the Matamata boys, Bob, myself and Jo decided to have a few drinks. Thanks guys, sore head the next day. Sunday morning was time for the muzzie run. What a site, the town was buzzing with muzzies with onlookers treated to a rare site. Thanks to the traffic control, job well done. The pony run took us to the Matamata race course where we had lunch and played some games. Well done Nick for talking sweetly to the copper lady. Like to mention when it came time for our team to perform the game. Sarah how much did the other teams pay you not to turn the key. Oh well I guess it wasn t a shopping challenge aye. When it came time to the push and pull, big guns in the tug of war the rain was the winner of the day. I guess Hamilton boys aren t much of tuggers after all. Well done to the Canterbury team for the win. We proceeded after this to the Car museum and I will say what a spectacular display by the hosts. Thank you. Finally the big night had come but just before this we had our all important fine session. Colin you are a great sheriff, your wit and charm extracts money out of us very painlessly. I must say the ladies scrub up well in their dresses and fascinators. Off to the races we go, thanks to Irena for making us keep our hats on. She must of been listening to too much Joe Cocker. Margaret and the team, you did a fantastic job. The band was a great choice with all the old rockers having a boogie on the dance floor, reminds me of Sweetwater's. The winners of the show cars must be proud, such a great achievement. Nicky and Jan, Pauline, Irena, Jim and many more. There was one particular moment when a man from Auckland had passed away when his family and friends brought his car down for its last hooray and was to be a winner. Lets just say there wasn t a dry eye in the house. Now that is what the mustang club and friendship is all about, fantastic tribute. Well to rap up the weekend was the final breakfast and everyone buzzing about Christchurch. I m sure they will have a great time organising this years event. Good luck. Everyone who came and left on the weekend, friends made, lives told and lots of energy drinks drunk we had a fantastic time. See you in Christchurch Lee 16

17 Our team very hard at work handing out convention packs and peoples tags on the first night and welcoming our sister clubs and our sponsors. Speeches later in the night which followed obviously with a lot of well deserved drinks, maybe a few of us over indulged but I felt good Lee :)

Waikato Mustang Xmas Do Thanks must go out this year to Allan and Maxine Rees for hosting our annual Waikato Mustang Owners Club Christmas BBQ at their lifestyle block on Kakaramea Rd on Sunday 8 th December. The plan was to meet at the new Classic Car Museum at 11am then cruise to Allan and Max s place shortly after. However after arriving a bit early the Rankine s decided to pop in for a coffee while they waited, then the Hastie's thought they d do the same followed by Colin and Barbara. Now for those of you who have had a coffee at the Juke Box Café before, you will know that the time from order to getting your coffee can take a while. Then still more Mustangs showed up and thought that a coffee would be a good start to the day, well, pretty soon there were more Mustangers inside waiting for a coffee, than there were outside waiting to cruise to the BBQ. So after a very swift 45mins, and take away coffees in hand around 20 Mustangs, Barry s truck and Lil Col s daily driver headed out along RifleRange road towards Pirongia via Temple View. This was where Don Rankine, ( you can give the $2 to the sheriff at the next meeting ), by this time heading the convoy made his 2 nd mistake of the day and proceeded to drive past Allan and Max s driveway, leading Mustangs about a kilometre down the road making all the LH drive cars complete a blind RH U turn to get back. Very soon after arriving at the hosts, the tables were set, chairs and gazebos erected and refreshments distributed. The weather played its part except for one small shower, members were all around the gardens soaking up the sun yakking and catching up while others took turns in wondering around Allan s beaut big shed and his toys. By mid afternoon hunger started to kick in so while the ladies prepared all the salads and sweets Jim donned his BBQ piny and flame grilled the steaks, snarl a's and chicken to perfection. If Mustangs were shod with Michelin tyres then the BBQ deserved a Michelin Star, but you would never see a Michelin tyre on a Mustang so I suppose I would have to say that after the meal we all looked a bit like the Wide Oval tyres that the late 60 s Mustangs were fitted with!! Late in the afternoon the day came to an end and Mustangs cruised off with some members staying on for the last strays of sun, two of the later stayers were Dave and Bridget Murtagh who travelled all the way up from Wellington to be with us. Still they were travelling in a 725hp 2007 Shelby Super Snake so probably got home before most of us. So on behalf of the club, many thanks to Allan and Maxine for hosting the day and thanks to Dave and Bridget for spending the day with us. Cheers Bob 33

Pedal Cars As I pen this article, it has now been eight weeks since my beloved Mustang was stolen and the knot in my gut is slowly disappearing. For those that aren t aware, my 73 Mach 1 was stolen from the Raceway Motel in Fielding during daylight hours, while I was at the Manfield race-track supporting the Central Muscle Car circus, amongst them fellow W.M.O.C member Bruce Dreadon who was debuting his new 70 Mach 1 racecar, complete with Nascar engine. In true Dreadon style, the car is beautifully prepared and once a few driveline issues are sorted, will be up there with the best of them. The following weekend Barbara and I were over on the Gold Coast visiting my daughter Tammy and her fiancé Nathan and my new grandson Cruz. Nathan is a total car guy and makes his living building and restoring Classic/Muscle/ Hot rods etc, his speciality being paint. His latest endeavour is importing all steel pedal cars from the USA and then converting them into 32 Ford Hot Rods. Initially they arrive as a 32 Ford Fire Engine, complete with hose reel, firebell etc, then Nathan fits a drop axle, removes the rear tray, fits a cushion seat and carpeted floor section, a gear stick, a custom paint job including pin striping etc, and also fits a stroller bar so they can be used as a stroller until the child is big enough to reach the adjustable pedals. Very cool. As good luck would have it he had a trade stand booked, the weekend we were there, at the annual Gold Coast Car Show at Muggereeba. I would liken this show to our Stragglers Show, approximately 1000 cars, heaps of trade stands, food stalls of all types, lots of kids rides, great live music and a good variety of vehicles of all marques. In essence, very similar to our own shows. That day (17 th Nov.2013) he sold 3 pedalcars (1 fire engine and 2 Hotrods) and took orders for 2 others. The prices starting at Aust. $ up to Aust Lucky kids! At the show I met with several Aussie petrol heads who, at hearing my loss, advised me that they are also losing lots of cars, apparently being stolen to order, their destination the Arab Emarites, where there appears to be no restrictions or controls on arrival. As with my car, matching numbers, low mileage US Muscle cars are the target, so be vigilant if your car fits this criteria. I read an article in the Brisbane Times about an Aussie who came home after work to discover his rare Ferrari had been stolen that day. It was fitted with a hidden GPS tracking device, so he high-tailed it down to his local police station along with his lap top to locate his cars current where-abouts. Imagine his shock on discovering his car was already off shore on an Arabian registered ship heading for the Arab Emarites. Australian Customs contacted the ships captain, his answer being basically tell someone who cares and I presume the owner had insurance. Car gone forever. I was also informed that the professional car thieves are now wrapping any car, they suspect may have a hidden tracking device fitted, with stainless tinfoil, which negates the out-going signal reaching the satellite or putting the cars in stainless steel meat export containers which has the same effect. It sucks, but that is the reality of it. Kind wishes to all Colin Reed (Deputy Sheriff) 37

Nick s fastback Now that Malcolm at Matamata Panelworks has the spare man power and I have a few more dollar's than I had this time last year we are due to restart my project. The down time has been very beneficial as it has given me the time to sort out some of sticky problem's I was having like problem # 1 the colour, now all sorted, the modification's to the lower front valance and the sill's etc. I have the Morrison cross flow fuel injection manifold sitting at home and when the body work and the drive train are ready I will be taking the car to Ross Dobson of Dobson's Dyno in New Plymouth to have all the injection and associated hardware including a Links engine management system, coil's and wiring etc installed. Ross does a lot of the tuning on many of the drift car's you see on TV and is probably one of the best at this type of work in New Zealand. The car will then come back to Matamata Panelworks for painting and a final fit out and all things being equal we hope to have it finished before winter. We expect the BOSS347 engine will have around 500 hp & 450 ft lbs of torque, the gear box is a Tremac TKO 600 five speed with.82 final drive, the suspension is Total Control Coil-Over for the front and g-bar 4 link with a custom built diff for the rear. Steering is also Total Control Rack and Pinion. the brake's are wilwood 6 pot front and 4 pot rear. The wheel's were custom made and imported from the USA, they are from a company called MHT wheels and the type of wheel I have are called Rambler-U425. /rear wheel's are 18x10 with 275 tyres and 18x8 with 245 tyres for the front. This combination of engine and suspension should make it go rather well I would say. I have attached some photos of it s progress. Cheers Nick 39

Tow It Home: 1968 Shelby GT500 Convertible The GT500 was the big-block brother of the GT350. This one is fitted with the Cobra Jet 428, and when you pair that much power with a four-speed manual and a convertible top, you have one fun pony car! Production of the Shelby cars had already moved into Ford s facilities by the time this one was built so it may not be as desirable as the early cars, but it can still command six figures at the auctions. This one is far from that point, but it does appear to be the real deal and it can be found here on ebay with a starting bid of $50k. We weren t joking when we said that this Mustang is far from being a six-figure car. The floors are gone and just about everything else needs attention too. We know it is not beyond saving, but it s getting close. It truly is a shame that someone would let such a special car degrade to this point. The restoration will be expensive and we just hope that the reserve is set realistically here because it doesn t need to go much higher for this project financially unfeasible was the first year for the Cobra Jet 428. It had larger heads and an intake manifold that were kipped from Ford s race 427. Ford rated this one at 360, but reports claim that it was closer to 400. This is real American muscle here folks. It may not turn very well, but there is plenty of grunt to obliterate most anything at the stoplight. That all-important number plate is in place along with most of the Shelby specific parts so we know someone will swoop in and save this GT500. It is too bad that Shelby didn t have more of a hand in this one because after Ford got a hold of the concept they went more luxury than racer. Still, this dark pony is fitted with the manual transmission and a drop-top so it will provide plenty of thrills after a painful restoration. Luckily, towing it home should be a piece of cake! 41 MARYS RECIPE Here is our family's favourite steamed pudding passed on to the family by Grandma Overend. It is written in the old Edmonds cookbook Dominion Pudding 1 cup Flour 1tsp baking powder 50g butter 125g sugar 1 egg 1/2 cup milk 1/2 can condensed milk Grease pudding basin. Add 1/2 can condensed milk. The original recipe says put in jam or raisins. We prefer the condensed milk. Cream butter and sugar, add egg and beat well. Add sifted flour and baking powder alternately with milk. Pour batter over and steam for 1 1/4 hours. We often double the recipe for a hungry mob. Enjoy! Regards Mary Overend 41
