2 President s message: Brierside chat GREETINGS CORVAIR FRIENDS As I sit down to write this month s message, we have switched from snow to rain. It s been raining hard all day with possible ice later tonight. Our last meeting was at the Weathervane in Chichester, NH. We had a good group that showed up for some detailed planning for the Dust Off. We were glad to see Jim and Rick at the meeting and Allan back from his snowmobile trip. The ladies were talking about the big shopping day coming up for stuff for the baskets. The hot topic was trophy designs for the show. I am sure everyone will be pleased with our final decisions. After many discussions, some final decisions were made at the very productive meeting. I hope the weather is changing for the better, meaning that spring may be coming sometime. Most likely The March meeting of the C N H C A w a s he ld a t the Weathervane restaurant in Chichester NH. There were 19 members present including Paul & Evelyn Ardito, Rick Barnard, Bob & Agnes Brown, Wayne & Janis Cox, Jon & Ginny Guignard, Allan & Judy Jones, Ron Moller & Polly Jewett, Ray & Cecile Moore, Ed & Christine Morse, Tim Sattler and Jim Turner. Co-President Ginny Blackmer called the meeting to order at 2:50 pm after all had enjoyed lunch. Thanks to Ray Moore for coordinating the location, all seemed pleased with the room, service and food. A motion to accept the Secretary s report as presented in the newsletter was made by Paul Ardito, seconded by Janis Cox and approved. Bob Brown presented the Treasurer s report with included income from dues and expenses to reserve the Fairgrounds, startup money for the Dust-Off and Newsletter expenses. Additionally, more dues were received at the meeting, a donation was received towards the Dust-Off auction and a memorial donation was made in the amount of $50 to the Concord Regional VNA in the name of Phyllis Turner. A motion to accept was made by Allan Jones, seconded by Paul Ardito and approved. Jon Guignard asked for additional photos for the Newsletter Mystery Photo. He also wanted to remind everyone that items for the Newsletter are usually needed within a week after the meeting for the next month. Our next meeting is scheduled for April 13 th back at Kapelli s in Boscawen. Dust-Off planning review and update: There was a 2 we are headed for a long mud season but look on the bright side summer is just around the corner. As I finish writing this in the morning, the weather has gone from rain to slush back to rain and is just making a mess everywhere. I will have to wade to my car through the puddles and mud in the driveway, but this too will dry up soon, I hope. Janis is finalizing her plans for the trip to Virginia to see sister Linda with her mother and have Ginny fly down and ride back with them. I am sure they can have a good time and not be too bored sitting around talking! Looking forward to seeing everyone at Kapelli s for our April meeting. Remember to bring your donations for the raffle baskets and door prizes. Also, remember to check what you need to get your car ready so you can get the parts and stuff and have lots of cars at the 25 th Annual Spring Dust Off. It is sure to be a great time for all!! Wayne Cox CO-President Secretary s Report March 9, 2014 lengthy discussion on trophies after which a motion to go with plaques for the car classes and the ice trophy s for the Valve Cover Race and Back-Seat Drive, was made by Ray, seconded by Bob and approved. A motion was made by Rick, seconded by Janis and approved that as a giveaway celebrating our 25 th Anniversary that we have glasses printed for each car entered. Ray brought in the Milwaukee Grinder that he is donating for the raffle. There was discussion about coming up with a couple more items so that we can offer a second and third place. Bob Brown suggested that he may be able to donate a case of oil and a suggestion of a $50 gas card might be good if someone wanted to donate. We discussed Door Prizes, with a reminder that if anyone has something or knows someone who could donate, that would be great. We will be asking Clark s. There was a discussion about inviting all 60 s Chevy s or all 60 s cars to the show. There was some interest, but it was agreed not this year. Ray also brought in the clock he made for the Best of Show. It is very nice and he has enough parts for another one for next year if we want to do this again. New Business: We received a note from member Bill Kolsun with his dues payment. We also received a thank you from the Jones family for the donation the club made in memory of Marion Jones to the church building fund. We also want to thank Ed Morse for visiting with Ted Trevor. It was noted that the V8 Registry can be accessed from the CORSA web site. Rick noted that he recently watched My Classic Cars on TV where host Dennis Gage devoted the show to two Corvairs. A motion to adjourn the meeting was made at 3:37 by Jon, seconded by Jim and approved.

3 The Northeast Corvair Council (NECC) is managed and financed by member clubs that are regional chapters of CORSA. We are a member of NECC along with 8 other clubs. NECC conducts performance driving events for all makes and models of cars. The events include open track days, time trials, auto crossing, drag racing and more. Their history goes back to 1974, when NECC conducted time trials for Corvairs at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut. NECC has given our club a grant to help with our 25 th Dust-Off. This grant recognizes our (CNHCA) help at the 2012 Sturbridge convention. In addition, Al Lacki of NECC, has updated our website. He has done a tremendous job and the website can now be viewed at Thanks, Al. From the Editor s cubicle Let s all welcome new member Jean Marc Urbain from Montreal Tech Talk A suggestion from Ray Moore I started my 64 coupe last week only to discover I had a large fuel leak around the top of the fuel pump. I tried to tighten the five 10/32 X 1½ bolts, only to find them stripped in the fuel pump housing. Being a farm kid, I took out the screws one at a time, re-drilled with a 3/16 drill straight through the body and installed a 10/32 X 2 stainless steel socket head bolt with a locking nut. Then proceeded and did the four others the same way - doing them one at a time keeping everything lined up. Restarted my car and everything worked out fine no leaks and it looks good too. Total cost was $5.00 plus cheap, cheap labor. Hope it helps. April Mystery Member Who am I now? Here is another installment of MM. I hope you re enjoying it. The answer for March at the right is Tim Sattler from I m still waiting for more submissions. To participate, scan your original photo at a minimum of 300 dots per inch and the file to me at gnard@empire.net. If you can t scan your photo, I can. Send it directly to me to minimize handling. I ll scan it and get it back to you as soon and as safely as possible. If you don t wish your original photo to leave your sight, make a clean Xerox copy (halftone or gray scale) and get that to me. 3

4 March Meeting We had a productive March meeting with a great turnout. I don t know if this turnout was due to the seafood or beautiful weather. In any case it worked and I m glad. It was so nice to see so many faces we have not seen in a while. Check the minutes to see all who made the trek. Dust-Off plans are coming together nicely. We are trying something different with the trophies this year. Jim Turner came up with an idea for plaques and Janis is checking with the trophy company. We are also ordering some special keepsake mementos to hand out to all our registrants. With only one full meeting and a last minute panic meeting left before the show, we hope to see everyone at Kapelli s on the 13th for the last bit of planning before the panic meeting. Think spring. And in fact think it real hard!!! Events Calendar Next meeting 1 PM April 13 th at The Kapelli s Come help us do what CNHCA does best eat, greet, and meet! Top of the agenda for April is more Dust-Off planning. We received an from Bay State Corvairs stating that they will contribute 4 baskets to our Chinese Auction in honor of the 25th anniversary of the show. That s very generous and we thank them. 7 Tech Talk What s That Clunking Sound? By Bob Brown You may recall that in the winter of 2009, I did a total recon of the front suspension and steering of our 65 coupe and took that death-defying ride of 12 miles to the alignment shop. That was a Saturday and my reason for choosing that particular day was three-fold; (1) less traffic to contend with, (2) I knew that he would be working that day and his knowledge of classic cars was extensive, and (3) I had faith in his work. And, sure enough, he did a beautiful 4-way alignment. Fast forward to 2013 and we re driving west along route 11 in company with Jon & Ginny, Ray & Cecile. It s a beautiful fall day and our 3-car caravan is heading for the Vermont side of the Connecticut River, the north to wherever. Agnes was enjoying the ride until we reached E. Andover that is. We hit a rough section of road and ouch! What s that loud clunking noise up front? This can t be happening! Everything s new and tight. As we continued our trip, I listened intently to determine its characteristics and noticed that it would continue to vibrate briefly after each clunk. I made an effort to keep the right front wheel away from rough spots until we stopped at a diner near the bridge going into Orford. There I did some preliminary checks, which yielded no obvious problems. On the trip home, the noise didn t change, but I knew I had to find the source as soon as possible. So, once home, I raised the front on stands and began checking every bushing, nut and bolt. Everything was checking out fine and then I happened to grab the right tie rod and quickly discovered the inner tie rod was loose inside the sleeve. Then I noticed that the clamp was in the wrong position, which rendered it incapable of pinching the sleeve onto the tie rod end. Although the other three clamps were correctly positioned, they weren t properly tightened to the correct torque. Once all four clamps were tightened, the noise disappeared and I was able to finish out the season. I did, however, order a new sleeve. Recently, I removed the right tie rod assembly and upon examination I noticed the threads on the inner sleeve end were badly damaged and the bore had been enlarged over time. Despite the fact that it took three driving seasons or about 4,000 miles for the problem to surface, it s frightening to think what could have happened if this clunking sound was left unchecked. An innocent mistake by a very experienced technician that might have had serious consequences. So, please, when it comes to a heavy banging or clunking sound that suddenly appears without warning, don t be complacent. In memory of Phyllis Turner I want to thank you for coming to Phyllis funeral She would have liked that seeing all you people. Phyllis enjoyed going to Corvair meetings, Dust-Off and car shows to meet all you people and enjoying the great get-togethers. We will miss her. Thank you for sending sympathy cards when I needed them. Jim Remembering Phyllis Turner 7
