Welcome to 2017! The start this new year sees me in the Director s chair, with new and exciting challenges! I am looking forward to working with the new Executive and you, our members, to make this the best Peterborough HOG Chapter! I took on the role as director as I want to see our club continue to stay strong and flourish while we have fun on the road. First, I thank you all for the opportunity to lead us into another riding season filled with new adventures. Many of you know me However, over the last few years, I wasn t around much due to work injuries. So, for those of you who I have yet to meet, following is a bit of my history Continued... 2 with our club and I look forward to seeing and meeting Chapter members at all our events and rides throughout the coming year. I ve been an active member of Peterborough Hog Chapter for going on 19 years. My love of motorcycles began in my early teens and did some riding then. But girls, cars and speedboats caught my attention while in my 20 s J. It was in my 30 s that my passion to ride came to the forefront and I ve been riding ever since, logging more that 300,000 kilometers. The longest ride done is Route 66, over 6 weeks, logging over 16,000 kilometers. What an experience! My first 9 years in our HOG Chapter saw me as the sole Road Captain, and I continued as a Road Captain for much of the last 10 years. In 2002, I coordinated all committees for our 14th Provincial Rally with a great team. And in 2013, I assumed responsibility for our Peterborough HOG 25th Anniversary 3 months prior to the event, working with our committee members to put together a memorable party enjoyed by all. I feel lucky we ve had such committed members, and look forward to working together to make 2017 a great year! We have an active club, and this year is filled with activities. From our monthly meetings, weekly Sunday rides and the National Rally held in Ottawa in July this year, there are lots of opportunity for you to share your love of riding with your members. Looking forward to a great year! Alf A new generic account has been set up as the main contact point for the group: info@peterboroughhog.ca The account is automatically forwarded to the current director of the group, and is listed on our website contact page. This allows us to maintain a consistent address for the group, and all we need to do is change the forwarding address when there is a change in directors. Page 2
T he annual election of officers for the Peterborough HOG was held at the November meeting; actually, no voting was necessary, as everyone standing for office was elected by acclamation. 4 T he week after the Bay of Quinte Toy Ride, the Peterborough Chapter hosted their own ride, and invited the Quinte and Durham Chapters to join us. Some of the Harley Ladies on the desk The weather was excellent for riding and the road captains did a great job leading and keeping the group together. In addition to a pile of toys for the kids, we collected about $1150 in donations. Once again, Durham won the Chapter Challenge. 5 was waiting for our arrival. O ur annual fall colours ride took place on the weekend of Sept This time of the year is usually ablaze with colour, but this year was different. There were The groom Rick, with Father Larry One of several obligatory Tims Stops practically no colours other than various shades of green. The leaves didn t start really turning until almost a month later this year! Never-the-less, the weather fully cooperated and we had a great ride, organized and lead by Rick Kelly. After a full day on Saturday, we stopped at the Best Western Plus Mariposa Inn & Conference Centre Orillia. Rooms were all pre-booked, and the hotel While relaxing out back, we had to keep it down a bit, as there was an outdoor wedding in progress. After their ceremony was done and the wedding party moved inside, we took over the area and prepared for our own mock wedding of Rick and his new lady, Tammy which she was totally unaware of, and a complete surprise to her as she arrived later in the evening. However, Father Larry, with Tammy and Rick Relaxing after the ride she took it in good stride and laughed so much that tears were running Continued... Page 5
2016 Fall Colours Riders from her eyes. Father Larry presided and everyone got into the act. It was hilarious! After the wedding, we moved inside for dinner, where the staff had set a section of the restaurant aside for us. An excellent evening and a lot of fun and laughs. So, Sunday morning I took my time, and ambled down to breakfast shortly after 9. To my surprise, I was the last one there. Again, I asked what time we were leaving, and again was told 11 am. Went back to the room and took my time getting ready. Came out around 10:30, and was surprised to see bikes leaving the parking lot! I scrambled to get my leathers on, and ended up being the last on the road. I will know better next time guys! Great weekend, great people, great ride! Thanks everyone! This was my first overnight ride with the group and I learned an important lesson: don t be late. I had asked what time we were planning to leave in the morning, and was told 11 am. There are old bikers, and there are bold bikers, but there are no old, bold bikers! Page 6
A s the old Pizzaville jingle goes.. It was a rainy day pushed aside by the sun, and all in all it turned out to be a great 500 Km ride! A bonus was that the fall colours finally started to show! A wet start! The annual fall Foymount Ride that was scheduled for Oct 1st, was cancelled due to bad weather. Roger s new toy (The only difference between men and boys, is the size of their toys!) The 2016 Foymount riders, in the sun! Not to be outdone, a small group braved what looked like the start of another weekend of bad weather, and headed out the following Saturday. I am told the weather started out wet, but the optimistic diehards proceeded none-the-less. As the day progressed, the rain was Page 7
P eterborough HOG once again participated in the annual Peterborough Santa Claus Parade on Saturday, Dec. 3rd. We started the day at Roger s barn, where about 20 members gathered to decorate the float. This year s theme was the movie, Wild Hogs. We made use of some of last snow we did have some fake stuff on the float though. Roger did a great impression of Dudley wrapped up in duct tape, complete with the leather aviator hat. After the parade, some members gathered at Gail & Rob s house for pizza. A great day was had by all! year s work, including the original HD garage, and added a couple bikes, one carefully put down in keeping with the movie theme. A man s life consists of 20 years of having his mother ask him where he is going, and 40 years of having his wife ask the same question. It was a chilly December day, but no real Page 8
O ver the summer, we had a few breakdowns on the road. In one case, the rider had a new bike and also had a CAA membership, so he made a call for a tow truck. In another case, the rider did not have insurance and was hit with a rather hefty towing bill. I just wanted to remind everyone that included in your National HOG membership, is a standard once-a-year free towing service to the nearest Harley-Davidson Retailer, up to a maximum of $100. You can augment this coverage for a few extra bucks a year. All Peterborough HOG members should have this standard benefit, as being a National HOG member is a prerequisite to joining any local chapter. The following is a copy of the HOG Roadside Assistance Program: H.O.G. Roadside Assistance was designed for riders and is supported by towing companies that know how to handle a motorcycle. The towing companies will take you to the nearest Harley-Davidson Retailer or Dealership (US), depending on the country you are visiting, to have your bike serviced, or ready for service if it is during off hours. H.O.G. members enjoy many valuable benefits and programs. Full members are covered by the Standard Package. Standard coverage is limited to one occurrence per year, up to a maximum of $100, for towing to the nearest Harley- Davidson Retailer. Road Canada/Road America assist with towing service, extrication assistance, fuel replacement (excluding the cost of fuel), and offer 24/7 telephone support. Call the Road Canada/ Road America toll-free number at This number is also printed on the back of your H.O.G. membership card. Road Canada/Road America (depending on where you are travelling) will send an authorized service provider to assist you. After the service is completed, if the invoice total is $100 or less, the member does not pay anything. If the invoice is more than $100, the member must pay the difference. Call Road Canada Customer Service at and sign up for the Deluxe ($19.95), Ultra ($29.95), or Ultra Plus ($49.95) Package. If you are a member in good standing, just click on the JOIN button and you will be approved for access. On a personal note, I have met many of you during my first year with the group, and had some great rides. I find all the rides are well organized and led by very competent Road Captains thank you! In October, I bought a new bike well, not exactly new, but new to me. It is a 2012 dark blue/black FLHTCU Ultra Classic. I had been looking around for one for a while, checking all the dealers in the area, but could not find anything within my budget. I did see a nice red one at Longley s, but by the time I got back there (after a week of illness), it was gone. That was pretty much the story for other bikes I was looking at I guess they are pretty popular and in high demand. Then on the off chance, I did a search on Kijiji and found one in downtown Toronto at a BMW dealership of all places! I guess the previous owner had traded it in for a BMW (car or bike), and now the dealer wanted to unload it quickly, as the ask was about $4000 less than the average asking price I found from any HD dealer in Ontario. I jumped at the opportunity. Rather than riding it home, I headed straight for Longley s where I left it with them for a complete inspection, which it passed, and promptly bought an ESP. Our plan is to take it out west in the spring to visit my sister, and I wanted the peace of mind of a safe and protected ride. Continued... Page 11
On the way back, Lois noticed the headlight flickering, and I thought that maybe there was a bad electrical connection. However, I later found out that the previous owner had installed a headlight modulator, which purposely switches the intensity several times a second. The theory is that this supposedly makes the motorcyclist easier to see from the perspective of other cars. The modulator only works on the headlight, not the spot lights, and only in daylight there is a ambient light sensor that kills it at night. It is also disabled when the high beam is on, and can be completely turned off with a handle-bar mounted switch apparently recommended when riding with a group of other bikers. I did some research on this, and found a lot of mixed reactions some say it helps, others say it is a distraction. I would welcome your opinion on this. So far with my limited riding on this new bike, I am very pleased. Despite being larger and heavier than my Heritage Softtail Classic, I find it surprisingly easy to handle. It has a larger engine (103) and runs very quiet compared to the Softtail which has straight V&H pipes. Can t wait til spring!!! T he Peterborough HOG Chapter has a large and active Ladies of Harley group. The group meets the 2nd Wednesday of every month and, weather permitting, they go for a short ride around 3 pm, and follow up with supper and a social evening. The members of L.O.H. run their own meetings and sponsor activities in which both ladies and men (when invited to do so) can participate. The L.O.H. is a program sponsored by the Harley Owners Group to support women motorcycle enthusiasts (both drivers and passengers). Remember You don t have to have your own bike to be a L.O.H. member! Peterborough L.O.H You must first join the National HOG and be an active full or associate member of HOG to be affiliated with the L.O.H.. Although L.O.H. is free, this benefit is not automatic you need to update your membership profile to include L.O.H.. Page 12
