5 VOLUME 50 ISSUE 1 PAGE 5 Natchez Trace Tour On Nov 10 th Martha and I departed for Natchez, MS to meet up with the Houston Group and some members of the Dallas Group. We headed out on Thursday because we wanted to make the trip in two days instead of just one day so that we would not be too tired. We traveled Shreveport, LA the first day and stayed at the El Dorado. Luckily Martha made enough on the slot machines that we could continue on our journey. She even made up for the $2 that I lost. The next morning we leisurely had breakfast, went to the casino for a while and then left for Natchez. We had reservations at the Grand Hotel Natchez that is along the Mississippi River. The reservations there were excellent. We paid a little extra and got a balcony suite that we thought was suppose to look over the river, but the suite that we had overlooked the building next to us and if you stepped on you tippy-toes you could see the river off to the side. Other than that the room was huge. Later that evening the Houston Group arrived and we all gathered at a restaurant called Biscuits and Blues. This place was just a couple of blocks from the hotel and we walked to it. The food there was good and there was plenty of it. There were a total of 19 people there, 2 from Lone Star, 3 from Dallas, and the remainder from Houston. The next day we took off and went to the Natchez Trace Parkway. Our first stop was at the Old Trace Exhibit Shelter. This was basically a lean too with information about the trace and some of the history about it. The Old Natchez Trace was a wilderness road that originated from a series of trails used by the southeastern Indian Tribes. It was politically, economically, socially, and militarily important for the United States in its eary development. Among those that traveled this road were American Indians, traders, soldiers, Kaintucks, post riders, settlers, slaves, circuit-riding preachers, outlaws, and adventurers. This was a good spot for photo opportunity for a photo shoot of the cars along the Trace. Some of the lovely ladies that went on the Trace. Located across the street was a portion of the original Trace. You can see the amount of wear that has occurred to the trail over the years. If you are really energetic, you can actually walk some of the Trace.

6 PAGE 6 Natchez Trace Tour (cont) THE GREYHOUND The next stop along the trail was Emerald Mound. This mound covers approximately 8 acres and is the second largest Missippian mound north of Mexico. The main platform was constructed in three stages beginning in Archaeological excavations have confirmed that the first and second stages had at least two secondary mounds with buildings on their summits. During the final stage of mound construction, the secondary mounds at either end were enlarged, and at least six additional mounds were constructed along the perimeter of the platform. After climbing the mound and looking around for a while we headed for the Information Center and Mount Locust. There was not a whole lot at the Information Center, but there was Mount Locust just behind it. Mount Locust was built in approximately 1780 and this home is one of the oldest structures still standing in Mississippi. It functioned as both a plantation and an inn for travelers along the trace. Travelers could pay and would be able to rest for the night. Mount Locust is the oldest surviving of the 50 inns that was located along the Trace during the period of greatest use of the Trace. From here we headed off of the Trace and traveled over to Hwy 61 up to a little town called Lorman and to the Old Country Store for lunch and the home of Mr D s heavenly fried chicken (with an emphases on the heavenly part). If you like down to earth, home style, delicious food, this is the place. When you go in you seat yourself and then head for the buffet. The buffet was filled with sweet potatoes, mac-n-cheese, biscuits, cucumber and tomato salad, black eyed peas, and several other vegetables. All of the food is fresh and never frozen and of course the chicken and fried pork chops. During our meal, Mr. D came out and sang to each table and then he and one of the waitresses sang together. This is a must stop any time you pass through this area. After we waddled out of the store we headed back to the Natchez Trace and to Windsor Ruins. The ruins are what is left of the Windsor Plantation that covered 2,600 acres. The footprint for Windsor mansion, built between , was set by 29 columns which supported a projected roof line that protected 9 ft wide verandas on the second and third floors. The 29 columns were constructed of bricks that were covered with stucco. Each column was more than 3.5 ft in diameter at their base and stood 40 ft tall. The columns were constructed atop 10 ft tall, paneled brick plinths that were almost 5 ft square. Bricks were made in an onsite kiln. The fluted columns were crowned with ornate, iron Corinthian capitals, and the columns were joined at the height of the third floor by ornamental iron balustrades. On February 17,1890 the third floor caught fire and the only thing that remained are the 29 columns, capitals, and the third floor balustrades.

7 VOLUME 50 ISSUE 1 PAGE 7 Natchez Trace Tour (cont) Our next stop was at the Vicksburg National Military Park. The park preserves the site of the American Civil War Battle of Vicksburg, waged from May 18 to July 4, Reconstructed forts and trenches evoke memories of the 47-day siege that ended in the surrender of the city. Victory here and at Port Hudson, farther south in Louisiana, gave the Union control of the Mississippi River. The park includes 1,325 historic monuments and markers, 20 miles of historic trenches and earthworks, a 16-mile tour road, a 12.5-mile walking trail, two antebellum homes, 144 emplaced cannons, and the Grant's Canal site, where the Union Army attempted to build a canal to let their ships bypass Confederate artillery fire. The acre Vicksburg National Cemetery, is located within the park. It has 18,244 interments of which 12,954 are unidentified ranging from 1866 to Located next to the National Cemetery is the ironclad gunboat Cairo. The Cairo was sunk in the Yazoo River on December 12,1862 and was the first U.S. ship in history to be sunk by a torpedo/mine. It was recovered from the Yazoo in 1964 and partially restored. Visitors are able to walk out on the boat and see the structure, boilers, and drive on the ship. Sunday was our easy day. We had reservations at The Castle for Sunday brunch. The Castle Restaurant located in Dunleith s original carriage house and stables, built in the 1790 s and was built to resemble a castle. This 18th century brick structure was home to carriages and purebred thoroughbreds. After another fine meal we went to the Dunleith Inn for a guided tour of the ground floor. We could only go through the ground floor because this 1856 inn is still an active inn and the upstairs is still rented out. This inn is listed as a National Historic Landmark and sits on 40 landscaped acres with original historical buildings dating back to the 1790 s. The buildings are: the carriage house and stables (The Castle Restaurant), a dairy barn, a poultry house, a brick dependency, and a greenhouse. After the tour there was a Kodak moment in front.

8 PAGE 8 Natchez Trace Tour (cont) THE GREYHOUND We then traveled to St Mary s Basilica. St Mary s is the only church in Mississippi built as a cathedral and the corner stone was laid in February of 1842, and dedicated in December After a presentation by one of the church members we were allowed to tour the cathedral and take pictures. That afternoon we went back to the hotel with some of the people headed downtown to go shopping, some to the casino, and some of them did both. Monday morning everyone said their goodbyes and departed for home. After the regular meeting on Sunday, there will be a Board Meeting to discuss the activities for the following year.
