Bird St. Jackson, MI NEWS November/ 1 December 2012 Exciting Renovations Coming to the Meijer Branch in 2013! I am delighted to inform you that the Jackson District Library s Board of Trustees has approved renovation and expansion of the Meijer branch in We are seeking to create an attractive community destination that will incorporate exciting spaces for young children and families, a dedicated space for teens, quiet study/tutoring rooms, a digital media laboratory and many more computers for our patrons. We will also add a meeting space that can accommodate up to 200 people for library and community events. All these new spaces are designed to be flexible and adaptable to future needs and evolving technologies. Community members offered several suggestions during 2 public visioning sessions held earlier this summer. Please visit the special webpage we have created at to follow progress of the project. Built in 1983, the Meijer branch has become the busiest branch in the Jackson District Library system, next only to the Carnegie Library in downtown Jackson. There have been no additions or modifications to it since it was first built. It has no space for hosting popular library events such as story times for children, yoga lessons for seniors and rock music concerts for young adults. Several events during our annual Summer Reading Program routinely attract more than 100 attendees. There is a lack of comfortable seating and no space to expand collections in the multiple formats that the library now has to purchase materials. Over the past 30 years, there have been significant changes in the world of public libraries and how residents use them. Public libraries have now grown into community destinations showcasing the latest in information technology while serving as comfortable reading areas and gathering places for residents. Construction is expected to commence in March 2013 with an anticipated completion date in January We will endeavor to keep the library open as much as possible during the construction period. The library will use funds from its reserves and will accept donations from the public to help finance this project. Please contact me if you would like to consider making a contribution toward this exciting new project! Ishwar Laxminarayan ishwar@myjdl.com (517) , ext FREE Notary Public service at Carnegie. Call

As a police officer, Ken was desperate and wide open to emotional pain from a traumatic incident while on patrol. On the outside, he looked all right, but he was emotionally ill. His PTSD symptoms were classic. Ken says, I have written a book about my personal experiences serving as a police officer and my involvement in the shooting of a barricaded gunman. The emotional issues which followed including suffering PTSD changed my life forever. Situations like I faced are part of all first responder s day to day existence. Even today with advances in medicine and therapy, not everyone gets the help they need before it s too late. In his book, Ken exposes his inner most pain and feelings about his position as a police officer and the potential use of deadly force and chronicles his battle to overcome the pain of leaving the job he loved. For more information on Ken visit Join us for Ken s story at JDL s Carnegie Library at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14. His book will be available for sale and signing.
