10 To most people, the sky is the limit. To those who love aviation, the sky is home. Jerry Crawford, Wings Over Texas For Lloyd and Elizabeth Massey, the sky would be their home for seven days as they traveled from to Santa Maria, Ca. It was my pleasure to host you at N13, if only for a brief fuel stop. Thank you for sharing your trip with us and sending the wonderful photos and movies. Readers, be sure to view the 3 movies at the end of Lloyd and Elizabeth s story on page 15. We aviators are all living vicariously on your trip of a lifetime! Thanks so much for sharing it with us! Feature Story by: Lloyd Massey "Bessie" as we have named her is a 2001 Super Decathlon. This plane is meant to fly in daylight hours and relatively good weather - no instrument approaches! We bought her from her second owner that kept her in a hangar in Danville. Pa. (8N8). The journey home would take 7 days and cover 2,634 Nautical miles or 3,029 statute miles. We avoided the busy airports and kept this a small-town affair. We did not land at an airport with an air traffic controller until we got home to Santa Maria. We might have been able to get home faster but we were trying to Below: Lloyd (Left) with wife, veterinarian, Cynthia Massey Missouri River, in background do some sight-seeing and overfly some big national parks and landmark on the way home and took some extra time. It would have been nice to take a month doing this trip...but reality sets in. The trip begins with all paperwork completed and ownership transferred to us. For planning I was expecting 115 Knts or 135 MPH airspeed, 10 gallons per hour fuel burn, legs no longer than 3 hours so I would land with 1 hour reserve fuel. No more than 2 legs a day. I tried to go to airports with 2 runways to avoid crosswind problems, or at least have another airport nearby as an alternate. Altitudes? 1,000 feet or so above ground for viewing, keep it legal and safe. Sometimes higher as needed. Often times, the surrounding hills were well above me, but I always had an escape, and never flew into a canyon that I could not fly out the other side of. At times I would only have 75% power (at full throttle) for take-off and would climb until I only had 50% power left due to the thinner air. Not a trip for someone without mountain flying experience.

11 Day 1, Thursday May 16, 2018; Pulled the plane out of her hangar in Danville, PA (8N8) for the last time at noon. There is no fuel at this airport, so we needed a quick stop to get fuel. We also had to wait an hour for the fog to burn off. A 10-minute hop to Bloomsburg, Pa. (N13). BJ, Airport Coordinator at N13, met me and was a delight. This was to be our biggest and most personable greeting until we got home. She also expressed an interest in our safety and following our trip. Lots of care and love from a stranger! She gave us a gift bag and introduced us to a great airport dog. Very nice facility there. Full of gas and ready to put some miles behind us we launched in a straight line to Sandusky County, Ohio (S24) airport near the town of Clyde. Self-serve gas, then figure out the plans for the plane and us for the night. Not much going on at 5 pm there but they let me put the plane in the "Life Flight Medivac" hanger since that bird was out for the night. A courtesy car and into town for dinner and a hotel. Day 2: This was the most hours and miles flying in one day for the whole trip. Sandusky, Ohio to Vinton, Iowa (VTI) was the longest leg of our trip helped by 25 KT tail winds miles. I had originally planned another field but a cross wind that was above my comfort zone had a last-minute switch in airports. Nice condition ramp and self-service fuel pumps. The flight planning area and bathrooms were very nice, but all was unattended. As was the courtesy car with keys in it. Wanting exercise after fueling the plane we walked around the airport for an hour more. We saw 1 person the whole time...the guy that cuts the grass at the airport. Not another plane moved, nobody greeted us. We then pressed on to Yankton, SD (YKN). Self-fueled and with the threat of rain and weather for the next few days we put her in a hanger again and grabbed a courtesy car. Dinner on the Missouri river (Nebraska side) at a place called Murdos. Wonderful meal with great scenery. Day 3: Weather and rest predominated today. We walked around town before the rain set in. Nicest Federal prison we have ever seen! Smack downtown at a former college. This was low security and inmates were walking about freely within their zone that we could drive through. We flew to Custer City, SD (CUT) just outside Rapid City, SD.

12 Day 4 Sunday May 20;(continued) On the way in we flew over the "Badlands National Park". (shown on left) Massive and seemingly forever big, I could just imagine being lost there as a settler trying to go from east to west. Self-serve gas again and away we go. Fly over the "needles" monument then over to Mt Rushmore for a few passes, we even circled around back to see if they carved the backs of their heads...no they did not. Not far away was the still incomplete monument for the Indian chief Crazy Horse. (shown below on Rt.) Then, we pressed on to Riverton, Wyoming (RIW). Flying low we could see some larger animals roaming the plains. Riverton was the first time a fuel truck pulled up to the plane. Tied down outside and a courtesy car into town for the night. On Right Crazy Horse; Below: Mount Rushmore

13 Day 5 was an early get up. We were going to tackle the Rockies and I wanted to do that before the winds picked up and thunderstorms developed afternoon. But this was the best day of the trip for scenery and location. Today would see terrier above 12,750 feet. We would climb as high as 10,500 feet and often be flying down valleys with terrain on both sides well about us. Our course zig zagged for best terrain and safe clearances, but also to get the best views. We flew the length of the Grand Tetons. Up close they towered above us with plenty of snow still on the peaks, off to our right was Jackson Hole, Wyoming. We flew about the same altitude where the timber line stopped, and it was only rocks above. Grand Tetons, shown above Spectacular view!

Day 5 (Continued) Jackson Lake gave way to Yellowstone National park. We could make out Buffalo and got a great view of "Old Faithful" blowing her stack. We could clearly see the hot springs that will instantly melt a human to nothing. Briefly in Montana's airspace then we pressed on to Rigby, Idaho (U56). Rigby was a great airfield for so many reasons. Self-serve fuel which we were used to, but no way to pay at the time. The honor system is in effect and you fill out a sheet with your name and address and how many gallons you bought, and they will send you a bill! The courtesy car with keys in it was right next to the fuel pump and we used that to drive to a wild life park where you can drive through and look at buffalo, black bears, Grizzly Bears, brown bears and deer like animals that we I would call dinner. Back at Rigby airfield the AG Cats came and went from their crop dusting work. Although tail draggers all, these are working girls. I am not sure if they sneered at pretty little Bessie for being a foo foo plane or if they were jealous of her comfortable lifestyle. But it was nice to see working planes. We then launched and flew over the "craters of the moon national park", again quite expansive, it was mostly devoid of vegetation and looked like a moon scape. In reality, it is a massive lava flow from a zillion years ago. Twin Falls Idaho gave us a spectacular view of some great water falls. A bit of dodging and weaving rain storms got us to Wells, Nevada (LWL) for the night. Self-serve fuel, a pay phone for a "planning area" and no courtesy car. Glad I brought my own tie down straps as the ramp was pretty bare and empty. The few hangers (4 total with 2 being condemnable) that existed looked in disrepair and the planes in them older and unloved. The proprietor of the hotel came and picked us up. 14

15 Day 6, Tuesday May 22. Another early start to cross the Sierra's before the mid-day winds and clouds kicked in and caused problems. 1 leg today, nice, and easy across Elko, Nevada, and Pyramid lake just north of Reno crest the tops of the Sierra's and descend into Grass Valley / Nevada City, Ca (GOO). This was Chuck Yeager's hang out in retirement. The field is deceptively hard to fly into with gusty winds, drastic terrain changes mess with your depth perception and the tree lined runway makes the winds swirl. Several notices advice this in not a good field for "student pilots". Fueled and tied down next to a FW-149 and a biplane tail dragger we caught a cab into town and stayed at a 160- year-old hotel with the original bar and lots of classic furnishings. Open mic night had some talented guitar players entertaining us for 3 hours over dinner. Above: Flight Planning in Wells, Nevada Day 7. An easy jaunt down the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains over Placerville then a right turn north of Fresno to cross over Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo before landing Bessie at her new home in Santa Maria, Ca. (SMX) hours of flight time. We were greeted by a friend, Grant, that snapped a few pictures and helped us secure her in the hangar. Sorry this was long. The journey was tiring but great. Bessie performed flawlessly (except for some intercom issues). When we were high over the mountains the engine purred like a kitten. I labeled the photos. Wish we could have taken another week to do this trip, but work and other responsibilities call. Trip of a life time. Low and slow. Below: Cynthia and Lloyd with their Super Decathalon in Rigby, Id. Please enjoy the 3 movies provided by the Massey s by opening the link below their photo. 1. Grand Tetons 2. Craters of the Moon, National Park, Id. 3. Home!
