2 Not only can he fly 2 On Saturday, February 25 th, Colonel Stahl proved himself to be just as capable at the cooking grill as he is at the controls of his GP4, as he hosted the first Annual Colonel Stahl Breakfast at the Bloomsburg airport. With the able assistance of sous chefs, Dan Broadt, Tim Ross, and Mike Hoover the combo of culinary masters produced platers of egg ham and cheese omelets, home fries, pancakes and the pie ce de re sistance, pork and venison sausage gravy on fresh, homemade biscuits. The Colonel even whipped up dozens of his special peanut butter cookies; great coffee dunkers. Mrs. Colonel Connie served the made-to- order meals and could hardly keep up with the production. As it is so often said about these kinds of events, there was no reason to go home hungry. Low ceiling scud running combined with the constant threat of rain meant all roads led to the Bloomsburg airport as the ramp parked an untold number of cars, trucks and SUVs throughout the morning. The weather did not deter anyone from getting there. The Colonel s recipe for a great time is: start with lots of great food, combine with lots of great people, and voila, out comes an abundance of great camaraderie. All with a steadfast purpose, pilots, co-pilots and aviation minded folks of all ages converged on the airport café a.k.a. Bloom Flyers pilot lounge to enjoy a button-busting, rib-sticking, lip-smacking, down-home cooked breakfast. Based on the number of eggs the Colonel converted into omelets, his best guess for attendance was well over 50. Although that groundhog, Phil, predicted six more weeks of less than desirable atmospheric conditions, the recent spell of pleasant weather has given everyone hope that it won t be long until fly outs are again weekly events on the calendar. Hats off to the Colonel, Dan, Tim, Mike and Connie for making February 25 th a very memorable midwinter day. And, thanks to all who attended. Hope to see everyone again at the next event.

8 8 Feature Story: Our Italian Stallion no it s not Rocky Balboa!! Before you go to the Webster dictionary to look up the definition of determination, try to visualize an example: Was it an image of a 14-1/2 year-old boy riding a bicycle 2-1/2 hours, ONE WAY, from Berwick to Danville for a 45-minute flying lesson? Bet not! Oh, did I mention he did this for a year and half. And, out of fear of what she might do, kept it a secret from his mother until he soloed on his 16 th birthday? No? Well, that s not how determination is defined in the Webster dictionary either, but it is a great example, often a familiar one, of how determined some people can be when it comes to flying. Well, everyone, meet Chris Mazzitti, affectionately known as the Bloomsburg airport s Italian Stallion, but more about that later. Chris really gives credit for youthful aviation exuberance to Reverend Warren Bachman, who first introduced Chris to Kenny Burrows, the manager of the Danville airport back in For a mere $14, Ken gave Chris his first 45 -minute flying lesson in a J3 Cub and unleashed the determination described above. So, you don t get the wrong impression, Chris s dad knew and whole heartedly supported his son s ambition, both practically and financially, but kept Chris s secret, too, because he was just as afraid of Mrs. M as Chris was. Following high school, Chris s pursuit of a college education took him to Knoxville and the University of Tennessee. And, while majoring in co-eds and minoring in other stuff. Chris still found time to pursue his pilot s license, too, finishing his ground school instruction while taking lessons in a Cessna 150 with instructor Sam Knight out of the Downtown Island airport in Knoxville. After graduation in 1974, he returned home and teamed up again with Ken Burrows to put the finishing touches on his flight training. Then, in 1976, after nine years of determination, Chris achieved his teenage dream, demonstrating his knowledge and flying skills to flight examiner Bob Gilford at the Sunbury Island airport.
9 9 In his early flying career, 1981 to be exact, Chris joined the Parlor City Flying Club at the Bloomsburg Municipal airport, enjoying the $25/hour wet fee flying N55354, the club s Piper Cherokee 180. But, like so many young fliers, career building and marriage took a big bite out of time and money once spent on flying. Unfortunately for Chris, flying had to take a back seat for almost 20 years. But, when he decided to get back in the game he went all the way! By then Joe Fox was running the Danville airport. When Chris asked Joe if he knew of any planes for sale, Joe sent him to see Jim Lewellyn, who was selling a Cessna 140. If you ve ever seen Chris s 140, you won t forget it. What a classic airplane! Then in 2012, Chris added another beautiful aircraft to his hangar, a fully equipped, IFR certified RV-8, built by Dick Sharrow and Dean Puderbaugh, with an impressive equipment list that includes an autopilot, synthetic vision, a 650 Garmin, vertical power, a Dynon D10A, an advanced 650 Efis, a PMA 8000 Audio panel and is powered by a 198 h.p. Eagle Extreme IO 360 Lycoming with electronic ignition and Millennium cylinders. In addition, you must check out the eye-popping paint scheme and impressive Tail Art.a black Italian Stallion. Of Chris s 1,100 total hours as pilot in command, 930 are taildragger time. When asked what his most memorable flying experience has been, Chris quickly recalled the day his instructor Ken Burrows hopped out of the plane and said, Give me three laps around the patch with three takeoffs and landings. I ll never forget.what a high, Chris recalls, flying that plane alone for the first time. What aviation goal does this 65-year-old youngster still want to achieve? A seaplane rating! With a grin and a pondering look on his face, Chris simply said, I think it would be fun landing on a remote lake somewhere and go fishing. Talking to Chris, you can tell that he is grateful for the opportunity to fly and thankful to everyone along the way that has helped him achieve his dream. You can also tell just how much he cherishes his flying memories, too. For more often than not, when in a conversation with Chris, he ll reply to a question by saying, I ll never forget. I think he speaks for all of us. Don t you? Submitted by: Dave Ruckle
