1 1 BJ Teichman, Airport Coordinator - TOB airportcoordinator@bloomsburgpa.org Dave Ruckle, Pilot ruckleds@yahoo.com IF you know of someone who would like to receive our monthly newsletter, please have them me at airportcoordinator@bloomsburgpa.org. I will be happy to include them. Accomplishments: Well Done! Congratulations to Aaron Hartley Private Pilot Certificate 27 Sept A little history. A little over a year ago, in July, I received a phone call from Aaron inquiring about flight training. I can remember it like it was yesterday. As I was sitting on my back porch describing all the wonderful attributes of our airport, the flying club, and the wonderful people affiliated with N13, I wondered after our conversation if he would pursue flying. Aaron joined the Bloomsburg Flying Club and during the next 18 months he studied hard, flew as frequently as possible, soloed in January, and received his Private Pilot Certificate on 27 Sept. It is a joy and a pleasure to welcome he, and his lovely wife Miriam, into the Airport Family. Congratulations Aaron! Very well done!
2 2 Monthly Pilot Knowledge Quiz Compliments of Dave Ruckle Everyone who has taken the FAA private pilot written test has either unforgettable or forgettable memories of the experience, depending on how many times you may have had to take it. With getting your pilot certificate hanging in the balance, the pressure was intense. But, now, with it nothing more than a fading memory, would you really want to take it again? Sure, I bet you would also enjoy getting your wisdom teeth extracted again, too. Fortunately, both are just once in a lifetime experiences. So, let s have some fun with those once dreaded questions by taking a brief monthly quiz. See how much you remember or how much you ve forgotten. Do well and reward yourself with bragging rights. Do poorly and no one, including the FAA, needs to know. So, let s have some fun! 1. If air traffic control advises that radar service is terminated when the pilot is departing Class C airspace the transponder should be set to code: A B C Two-way radio communication must be established with the air traffic control facility having jurisdiction over the area prior to entering which class airspace? A. Class E B. Class C C. Class G 3. In which type of airspace are VFR flights prohibited? A. Class B B. Class C C. Class A 4. The correct method of stating 4,500 feet msl to air traffic control is: A. forty-five hundred feet msl B. four thousand, five hundred C. Four point five 5. To act as pilot in command of an aircraft carrying passengers, the pilot must have made at least three takeoffs and three landing in an aircraft of the same category, class, and if a type rating is required, of the same type, with the preceding: A. 12 calendar months B. 90 days C. 24 calendar months Isn t this fun? For even more fun, quiz a fellow pilot buddy with these questions. Now go to page 3 for the answers and see if you still have what it takes to keep your wings
3 3 Answers to the monthly Pilot Knowledge Quiz. 1. The correct answer is A. ATC will assign a discrete transponder code to pilots receiving radar advisories. When radar services are terminated, the transponder should be set back to the standard VFR code of The correct answer is B. Class G has no ATC control and Class E, while controlled airspace, has no specific ATC communication requirement. Class C airspace requires ATC communication prior to entering. (FAR ) 3. The correct answer is C. Operations of an aircraft in class A airspace must be conducted under instrument flight rules. VFR is permitted in all other airspace classes. (FAR ) 4. The correct answer is B. Standard pronunciation of numbers as altitudes is provided for in Aeronautical Information Manual section The correction answer is B. FAR requires pilot landing currency only if passengers are to be carried. The pilot has to confirm that he has made at least three takeoffs and landing with the preceding 90 days, prior to taking any passengers aloft. 8 8 Community Days Sept. 16 th, :00 to 5:00 Familiarizing our community with N13 is part of our mission statement. The Bloomsburg Municipal Airport recently hosted Community Days. It was a joint effort with the Boy Scouts of America and N13. The goal; to offer a venue where Scouts could earn merit badges. Knot tying, fire building, aviation, flag retirement were some of the many activities available to the Boy Scouts. Our first responders were present offering free finger-printing, first aid education, ladder repelling. The SWAT team and RC aircraft also gave demonstrations. Dutch oven cooking, catapulting and many more activities rounded out the day. Below are a few photos from our first Community Days event. Our attendance almost reached 1,000. Enjoy! First responders begin to arrive in the early morning fog.

Thank you to all our first responders for their service and for participating in our Community Days Event. Your service and presence is a testament to your commitment to our community. Sincerest thanks!

Above, Charles Fritz, Director of Governmental Services/Recycling Coordinator engages a parent and teaches the youth about recycling and environmental awareness. A REMINDER WE SHOULD ALL BE KIND TO OUR PLANET. How can you reduce your carbon footprint?
14 Flag Retirement Troop 44 received flags throughout the day from anyone in the community who wished to have their flag properly retired. Properly retiring our flag is a moving experience. Below Scouts prepare the Flag for proper retirement. 14 The Flag is held close to the heart before it is placed in the fire. This is done one at a time as the poem Old Glory is read and then passed to the next Scout.
15 15 Our Next Completed Event: 19 September The Explorer Club from the Children s Museum visited N13 on 19 September. First Stop: Conference Room in the new Airport Terminal Building for a brief Power Point, Introduction to Aviation. Presentation by BJ Teichman, Airport Coordinator. Second Stop: Meet the Pilots and their planes. Sincere thanks to all the pilots who participated, Rich, John, Phil, Ron, and Jim. Third Stop: Rides were offered in a Beech Bonanza, and a Gyro-Copter. Fourth Stop: Smiles and more smiles. They were grinning from ear to ear Rich (L) explains his Sport Avion to the students. Students sit in the cockpit for a closer look. (L) student waits for her turn for a ride in the V-tail Bonanza. Below, John orients the student on the avionics and cockpit.
16 16 Our Next Completed Event: 21 September Spatial Disorientation: John Sibole, FAASTeam Program Manager, Presenter Dr. Robert Barany was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1914 for his innovative research in treating vertigo. The Barany chair was named after him. The chair, when spun, induces Spatial Disorientation and allows pilots to experience vertigo in a safe environment. John Sibole provided the Barany chair and gave pilots an opportunity to experience vertigo. Seven pilots, our reporter, Kristin Baver, and I all had an opportunity to experience the Barany Chair following a brief presentation on the inner ear and vertigo. Far (L) George attempts to reach for simulated control panel above his head while John spots him in the chair. Below, George, in chair attempts to reach down. Photos are out of focus due to chair rotation.
