This will be my last message to you as president of Ankokas. It has been an interesting two fruitful years, again. At times it was frustrating but then enjoyable and always entertaining. The best parts have been the interaction with all my Ankokas friends. I had hoped to accomplish a few things and I feel that I have. I will still be around but someone else will be in charge. However, I will remain as head of the car show committee, unless someone else wants it? We lost a couple of sponsors this past year but then picked up some more thanks to pounding the bricks by a few of our members. Let s get out there and see if we can drum up some more financial supporters. We all know someone who might be willing to lend us a financial hand. Also, try to get some new Ankokas members while you are at it. We still have free national memberships available. We had a successful Haddonfield show thanks to all the helping hands on Saturday. If anyone has suggestions or objections, let s hear them. Let me know what you think. That goes for our Ankokas club as a whole. We want your feedback as to how things are going and how they can be improved. Twelve of us had a nice tour of the Philadelphia Masonic Lodge (thanks to Bernie) followed by lunch at Maggianos. Maybe we can do another in the spring? We still have some Ankokas activities to round out the year. We have our 9:00AM breakfast meeting November 19th followed immediately by Toys for Tots at Johnson s farm. If it s a nice day it would be a good run for your old car. Next is the Atlantic City Boardwalk Organ silent movie night December 16th with dinner beforehand on the boardwalk and then our annual Holiday party December 18th. 4 Holman Ford Lincoln Show SMOKE SIGNALS Page 3 New Hope Car Show article by Diana Antinucci photos by Carl Villone Holman Lincoln Ford of Turnersville held a show on October 1st. Carl Villone was contacted by the general manager of the dealership and was asked to get Lincolns from every era to be shown in conjunction with the unveiling of the 2017 Lincoln Continental. Ten cars were shown in the showroom and all participants were provided with shirts to commemorate the occasion, a chair that says Lincoln Continental and a trophy. In addition, there was a catered breakfast and lunch. Mr. Holman himself was there to help hand out the trophies. article by Diana Antinucci photos by Carl Villone The second week in August saw the car show in New Hope (first started in 1957), co-sponsored by the Lincoln & Continental Owner s Club and the Upper Solebury High School and benefitting the Upper Solebury High School. The show was held on Saturday and Sunday and about 150 cars participated. For those who have never been to this show, it s one you should try to attend. It s known as the Pebble Beach of the eastern seaboard. Lincoln has its own class and our own Carl Villone won First Place in the Lincoln division for his 1978 Continental Mark V Diamond Jubilee Edition.

5 article and photos by S. Soppe The AACA held it s 2016 Eastern Fall Meet October 5th to 8th, 2016, in chocolaty Hershey PA. There was perfect weather Wednesday through Friday for searching through 9,000+ vendor booths for that hard-to-find special part for your classic car, or cars for sale in the car corral. You can t see it all in one day. Pacing is the key to success. Wednesday night marked the return of the Night at the Museum fund raising event, showcasing the opening of the museum s newest upgraded exhibit area featuring famous Route 66. The highlight of the evening was a panel presentation with Wayne Carini (host of TV s Chasing Classic Cars), noted car collector Ralph Marano, and the co-authors of the book Cuba s Car Culture Bill Warner and Tom Cotter. They spoke about their histories with cars and car collecting, and the future of the hobby. Friday morning featured race car condition runs and the Hughes High-Wheeler races in the Hershey Stadium. These are some of the oldest cars still running. Two cars at a time compete against each other. The race starts with the driver of each car running around their car, starting the car, driving one lap around the track, stopping the car, shutting it off, running around the car again, restarting the car, and completing another lap. It s not as easy as it sounds. Sometimes it s hard to get these very old cars started. Competing in one of the races was our own Coles Roberts in his 1912 International, with four generations of his family riding as passengers. They all looked like they were having a lot of fun. There is a short video of this event on our website com under the BLOG page. The big event Saturday was the AACA show, featuring over 1200 cars on display to be judged. No Hershey week is complete without a little rain. This year Saturday was the rain day. A few car owners pulled out the car cover after their car was judged, but many owners kept their car out for the huge crowds to enjoy. 6 SMOKE SIGNALS Page 5 Member Profiles: Nominated Officers biographies written by the officers or Diana Antinucci President: Kathy Petters My name is Kathy Petters and I am running for President of Ankokas for I am currently the club secretary. I am married to Bob Petters and have two daughters and three grandsons with another on the way. I have been a member of Ankokas since 1985 and have been involved directly and indirectly with all of our activities. I computerized the registration process for all of the car shows making registering and reporting more streamlined. I hope to continue the good direction and progress that Ankokas has made. My first introduction to old cars was in college when Bob had a 1940 Oldsmobile on campus, and yes, I did drive it occasionally. After graduation, I taught high school mathematics, was then home for ten years raising our children, went back to school for computer programming, and retired from that profession after 25 years. I have been retired for 7 years and I am an avid reader. I took care of my youngest grandson for three years prior to daycare and will also do the same for the new baby due in January. Vice-President: Carl Villone Carl Villone has been a member of Ankokas since 2000 and has served in numerous positions, including Director for six years, two terms as President and four years as Vice- President. He is also President of the Lincoln & Continental Owner s Club, is a Senior Master Judge with AACA (with thirty credits) and has served on the national AACA board for the AACA Library committee. He owns a 1978 Lincoln Continental Mark V Diamond Jubilee edition. Carl is married to Josie and has two sons. He is also a first-time grandfather to a new baby boy named Cameron Joseph (born on October 24, 2016, 20 inches, seven pounds and four ounces). Carl worked for A&P (Superfresh) for forty-two years and has worked at Acme for the past year as meat and seafood district manager for the shore area. Secretary: Bob Petters My name is Bob Petters and I am submitting my name as secretary for Ankokas in I am married to Kathy for 48 years with 2 daughters and 3 ½ grandchildren. I have been a member of Ankokas for over 30 years and involved in most activities the whole time. I have been president for 6 years, vice president 4 years and a director or some other function the other years. I took over as property manager from Stan in Kathy & I have handled the car show registrations for over the past 25 years. My old car enthusiasm started with a homemade go cart when I was 10 and continues to this day. I currently own 3 Oldsmobiles that I actually drive. After college, I started as an insurance adjustor until I was drafted into the Army in 1967 for 2 years. Upon discharge I returned to the insurance industry as an adjustor with Allstate for 15 years before shifting over to medical malpractice investigations for the next 23 years. I have been retired for 8 years enjoying golf, fishing, yardwork, car restoration and keeping up with the grandchildren. Treasurer: Jeff Shulte I was born on August 21, 1949 in Scranton, PA and attended Nashua High School, Daniel Webster Junior College, Alfred University and the University of Michigan. I started my career in the automotive industry at age ten in 1959, working as an apprentice for a family-run repair business. After college, I continued to work and bought into a family repair business. Later, I sold my part of the business interest and worked in the automotive aftermarket parts arena. I later took an offer to become a Tech Specialist with a upstart Japanese Automobile Importer (Subaru Of America). I left Subaru as World Technical Training and Development Director to pursue an opportunity to again own my own automotive business, from which I retired in June I started my love of older vehicles, both stock and modified, in 1969, and have enjoyed automotive hobby affiliations with AACA, NSRA and SCCA. I enjoy the fellowship that occurs mingling with people who share my infatuation with the automobile. My current interests lie in the driving, maintenance and restoration of collectable and historic vehicles. I joined the Ankokas Region somewhere around 2001, served as a Director, Vice President, and currently as Treasurer. Director: Steven Soppe Steven Soppe has been a member of Ankokas since 2012, serving as Vice President and webmaster for the past two years. He lives with your newsletter editor, Diana cookie lady Antinucci, and their cat Jade (a.k.a. Editorial Supervisor). He owns a 1970 Plum Crazy Dodge Challenger R/T, a 2016 Plum Crazy Challenger Hellcat (yes they re cousins...), and a 1934 Packard model Steven spent 25 years working with computers as a programmer, analyst, and networking engineer before leaving the industry in He now enjoys 18th century woodworking, learning to play bass guitar, and since 2014 has been judging at AACA national shows (currently as a Master Judge). Director: Bernie Shuster Bernie Shuster is a member of the Cadillac LaSalle Club as well as Ankokas. He is a docent at the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum and at the Battleship USS New Jersey (which he helped restore). He is a member of the Masons (where he has held many positions), the LuLu Shriners and the Golden Slipper. He is a founding member of the National Museum of Jewish History. He was a Captain in the US Army Reserves and raced cars at Dover Downs International Speedway. Bernie owns a 1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible and has driven it in parades for Miss America, 4th of July and other national holiday parades with state senators, mayors and Miss Camden as passengers. Prior to retirement, he was the Senior VP of McDonnell Douglas Truck Services (a Fortune 500 company). Director: Tom McLarney Tom McLarney, with his wife Carol, currently serves Ankokas by handling membership and the roster. They also plan the annual holiday party. He has served in the past as President (2006-7). He owns a 1933 Chrysler and a 1969 Corvette. He is the sales manager at Conveyor Systems and Components Co. in Delran.

Steven: Yes, but that s not what I was thinking. It s time to renew your membership with AACA national and Ankokas. Diana: Oh right. 9 * The meeting was called to order at 7:40 pm by President Bob Petters. * After the Pledge of Alligence Jeff Schulte gave the treasurer s report. Jeff stated that the club did much better this year in that the overall balance remained close to the same, which is better than in past years. * Kathy Petters read the September secretary s report since it did not coincide with the publishing of the newsletter. * Bob reported from financial numbers put together by Jeff, that the Haddonfield show cost almost $4000 to put on. There was a discussion on the various cost items. Only $2500 was brought in from registration. There was discussion on our sponsors and that only through them are we able to afford having the show. Talk on how we can save money in the future was tabled until after the beginning of the year when car show meetings will be held for the 2017 show. * Tom McClarney reported that there were still 71 active members of the club. A 2017 renewal application will be included in the upcoming newsletter. * Bob reported that there were still two free national memberships available for * Sunshine reported nothing new and Dave Traino, who was discussed last month, reported on his own condition which has much improved. * Under old business, Bob reminded everyone of the upcoming Masonic Lodge tour and lunch afterward at Maggiano s on October 29. * Attention was brought to a signup sheet on the table. Several of us are going to attend the Boardwalk Organ Silent Film night on December 16th at 6:30 pm. Anyone who is interested can buy their tickets which are $20 through Ticketmaster for an extra fee or at the box office, day of. We will also meet and have dinner at the Rain Forest Café at 4:30. Judy questioned if it was still open and Bob said that he would check before the info is printed in Smoke Signals. * Diana gave a report on our newsletter saying that she was going to profile the people on the November ballot. * Steve reported on the website and said that those sections that had a password were really wide open with the password printed on the page even though required. Make sure to logon to see the expanded newsletter and more information on our upcoming events and local car shows. * Carl Villone reported that he would run for Vice President and that Jeff would retain the Treasurer position, but the President and Secretary were still not filled. Steve Soppe and Bernie Shuster will run for Directors, but we SMOKE SIGNALS Page 8 October Meeting Minutes require three, so he is still requesting a volunteer. * Jeff had a suggestion for a presentation at a future meeting. He knows a gentleman who does excellent mobile detailing and would be willing to do a talk on the tricks of the trade. Jeff put an ad in the Smoke Signals for the gentleman s business. * Jeff also has a lead on a new sponsor that was a jeweler. * By a raise of hands, more than half of the members present attended Hershey. * Bob said that he did sent out letters to the nonrenewing sponsors to thank them. Discussion continued about perhaps smaller amounts, but more sponsors. Nancy suggested an ad book for the show, but discussion suggested that it would not really be feasible under our circumstances. More talk about the Haddonfield show occurred and Jeff mentioned that only 5 people had to be turned away for not pre-registering. * Tom reported on the Holiday Party on Dec 18th at the Madison. The cost is up $5 and will now be $35 for members and $50 for non-members. Discussion on inviting sponsors to the Holiday Party led to a decision that inviting them to the Charter Luncheon would perhaps be better. The December Party is more of a thank you for the members and their involvement in the club. * There was a discussion of the various awards for their cars that members had received since the last meeting. These should be reported to Diana who will publish them in the Smoke Signals. * Carl Grossman now doing badges. * Get for sale and wanted ads to Diana. * Bob announced that the November meeting would be a breakfast gathering at the Wedgewood Country Club in Blackwood on November 19th. The cost is $15 and it was decided that the club would not pick up any part of the tab this time. There will be a separate parking area for our antique cars. It was then brought up that the Johnson s Farm Toys for Tots car show is the same day. We will investigate if the 10 am time can be moved early, so people can attend both. (Editor s note: time has since been moved to 9AM). * The Library request for 1920 s era cars was tabled until the first of the year. * Jim Wickel introduced a group of potential members that he brought to the meeting. 11 SMOKE SIGNALS Page 10 Ankokas Masonic Temple Tour article and photo by Steven Soppe For all of you that missed the tour of the Philadelphia Masonic Temple on October 29, you missed seeing a truly wonderful piece of history and architecture. Hosted by Bernie Schuster, we toured the Temple and learned of its rich history. The Temple was constructed in 1873 and has been called one of the great wonders of the Masonic world. The Temple is adorned with some of the finest artifacts of Freemasonry and contains magnificent Lodge halls based on themes of the ancient architectural world: Oriental Hall, Egyptian Hall, Ionic Hall, Norman Hall, Renaissance Hall, Corinthian Hall, and Gothic Hall, each one is spectacular in its construction and details. The guided tour takes you into each of the halls and explains some of the principles of the Masons. Throughout the Temple, you learn of the countless famous people throughout history who were Masons. Many of our founding fathers, U.S. presidents, and historical figures were Masons. The Temple s museum, founded in 1908 and dedicated by John Wanamaker (of the department stores), contains more than 30,000 items, including Brother George Washington s Masonic Apron, two letters in Washington s own hand addressed to his Masonic brethren, and Brother Benjamin Franklin s Masonic Sash worn in The Temple s library contains thousands of volumes covering all aspects of Freemasonry. Public tours are scheduled Tuesday through Saturday at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. & 3 p.m. and costs $15 for adults (reduced rates for seniors, children, families, and groups). 12 SMOKE SIGNALS Page 11 Roadside Ramblings Johnson s Corner Farm, 133 Church Rd., Medford, NJ Johnson s Locust Hall Farm, 2691 Monmouth Rd., Jobstown, NJ When Bill and Bette Johnson pulled their first corn wagon to the corner of Hartford and Church roads, I m sure they never imagined the success they would have. Johnson s Corner Farm, founded in 1953, now has a large bakery, a farm market (offering fresh produce, honey, fruit preserves and more), a gift shop, petting zoo, playground, hayrides, opportunities to pick your own produce (check with the farms for scheduling) and popular activities such as the Friday car cruises in spring and summer, a pie tasting in November and a Christmas light display in December. In September of 2015, they bought a second farm in Jobstown. Both farms are preserved under the Farmland Preservation Program. The Johnson s preserved their farm in Medford in 2002 and the farm in Jobstown was preserved by the former owner, Peter Tallman, in The farm in Jobstown, now called Johnson s Locust Hall Farm, is a hundred years older than our nation and that sense of history is emphasized at the location. Christmas at Johnson s Corner Farm runs from November 25th through December 30th and includes musical light show hayrides, the opportunity to decorate Christmas cookies, a visit with Santa and story time with Mrs. Claus. Glue candy canes (cane crooks facing out) to the outside of a can, tie with a ribbon and fill with holiday flowers. 3. Buy three different sizes of wreaths and hang them in the shape of a snowman. Add embellishments (scarf, hat, etc.) to complete the effect. 4. Gather pinecones, dip them in paint and add glitter. These have multiple uses. Hang them on ribbons from doorknobs, hang them from holiday garland or use them to fill dishes and vases. 5. Take a clear ornament, remove the cap and hook, add clear floor wax (I used to use Elmer s glue) to the inside, pour in glitter, secure the top and shake. After Holiday Ideas drying, reinstall the cap and hook. 6. Add hot chocolate mix to a clear mug or mason jar and layer in your favorite toppings. Just add hot water for instant cheer! 7. Turn a Reader s Digest into a festive Christmas tree! Follow the instructions found here: crafty-christmas-tree-out-of-readersdigest-magazines-photos. 8. Use extra ornaments not used on your tree to accent the rest of the house. Hang them from garlands and chandeliers or use them to fill vases, bowls and boxes. 9. String cranberries to use as a garland. Add ribbons and bows for extra appeal. 10. When wrapping presents, add a strip of complimentary paper around the wrapped present for a pretty, layered effect.
