Car Restoration Tip 35 Window Installation Most of us have heard horror stories relating to hobbyists' experiences installing windshields and rear and side windows. Practically everyone knows someone who cracked a windshield attempting to install it. The stories are so common that many hobbyists simply won't try to do the work, and that's too bad. Windows are actually very easy to install as long as you don't make the fundamental mistake. And what is that mistake, you might ask? It's applying too much bending force on the glass, causing it to break. In side windows (flat glass) the problem usually occurs when the chrome frame is being pressed onto the edge of the glass. In rear and front windows it happens when trying to force the assembly over the body flange. In all cases this is due to failing to lubricate the gasket that holds the glass in place. We've found two "foolproof" ways of lubricating gaskets and both are inexpensive. For side windows the best lubricant is liquid detergent. It allows all the pieces to press together easily and can either be washed away or it dries up internally. For windshields and rear windows we rely on rubber grease. It allows the glass/rubber gasket sandwich to slide into the body channels smoothly without binding or forcing. It is weatherproof and eventually evaporates and doesn't mar any surfaces. Rubber grease is available at most auto parts stores in the brake parts section. It's used to lubricate brake cylinder boots and piston O-rings before assembly.

At the President s Banquet, I was awarded the Webmaster s Award for Geroge Reinis. Congradulations Geroge! I have the following presentations set up for our monthly meetings. - Mr. Fred Young will speak about preparing your carfor concourse judging. - Jeffrey Bliemeister, the curator of the AACA museum, will give a presentation about the museum. - Terry Bond, national president of the AACA, will send a representative from the Hershey region to speak at the eastern national meet. - Showtime Detailing will have a representative to give a presentation on detailing your vehicle. - Auto Appraisal Group will have Chuck LoMagro give a presentation of auto appraisal. - Pollock Auto Restoration will have Dave Hutchinson speak to us about auto restoration. 4 SMOKE SIGNALS Page 4 Flag Festival: A Turn-of-the-Century Celebration Lisa Acker Moulder, the Director of the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia, is coordinating the annual Flag Festival: A Turn-of-the-Century Celebration, which will be held on Saturday, June 11th from 10am - 5pm. Now in its fourth year, the Betsy Ross House hosts an early 20 th century-themed celebration to commemorate Flag Day. This year they would like to have a mini car show (3-5 cars or more) with pre-1930's antique vehicles (they are flexible on the year 1931 or 32 will be OK) to add to their lineup of familyfriendly activities. The cars would be parked on Arch Street (which will be closed to all other automobile traffic during the hours of the festival). The visitors would have an opportunity to look at the vehicles and speak with the vehicle owners. John Carter of the Garden State Model A Club is also interested in participating and they are reaching out to our club as well. Lunch will also be provided and they can reimberse for mileage. A 10 by 10 canopy will be provided for the club. They project that 7000 people will visit Flag Fest this year. They also get a great deal of press for the event (the AP wire has run photos of the event 3 out of the last 4 years). This would be a great opportunity for our club to gain valuable exposure to a national audience. If you are interested, please feel free to contact Lisa at any time for more details. There is free parking in the back. There is also a handicap chair lift available at the north side entrance of the building (this is the entrance located next to the outlet driveway)

The parking lot behind the ballroom will be blocked off for our cars and there is a direct entrance from there to the ballroom. The ballroom area has wrap around windows and our cars will be in full view. Hopefully the weather this year will allow us to drive our treasures and show them off. Hot hor d oeuvres and assorted cheeses, crackers garnished with fruit and vegetables will be served upon arrival. There will be a cash bar. At 1:30 the buffet will be served consisting of chicken piccata, flounder franchaise, carved prime rib, and accompanyments. Afterwards there will be a dessert table. Please RSVP by March 27 th. A while ago I had to put a notice in that Robin Wells is looking for an antique car for a wedding on May 7, Her phone number is or Can some one give her a car to help her out for the wedding. Also, Mrs. Cinelli called me and said she has a garage for rent if anyone needs space for their old car. Her phone number is I am putting my 1979 El Camino up for sale. It is in pretty good shape. Jeff Car Restoration Tip 36 - Reassembly: Keep From Nicking Those Newly Painted Car Doors Reassembly of a restoration project always involves patience and attention to detail. One of the most difficult tasks to accomplish is replacing car doors without scratching or damaging the fresh painted surfaces. The two best tools for making this job easier are: masking tape and a floor jack. Before attempting to mount your doors, gently adhere masking tape to the outside edges of the doorjamb area on the body. This will help prevent the door's sharp edges from getting nicked or scraping the paint off the jamb edges. The tape can be removed as soon as the door is mounted in place. Now it's time for the floor jack. Car doors are quite heavy and bulky, so it is a big mistake to try holding one in space while aligning to the hinges. Even with a helper holding one end of the door, this job almost always ends up with damage. It's just too hard to keep the door aligned while fighting with its weight. Here's a better way. Take a scrap piece of 2x4 and wrap it with a towel. Place the piece on your floor jack and raise the jack to the approximate bottom height of the door. Lay the door's flat bottom onto the wrapped piece of wood, taking the time to balance it. Now all you have to do is keep the door from falling off, which is easily done with one hand. Position the jack such that you can roll the front of the door up to the hinges and then adjust the height until the door can be pushed into place. You will find this very easy to do because there is no physical effort on your part. This will allow you to be patient. Once the hinges are roughly bolted in place you can lower the jack (keep it there just in case you need to stop the door from moving suddenly) and start testing the door for closing. You will have to move the door up and down slightly, as well as forward or rearward to get it in the proper position, and the jack will provide a resting place for the door during these adjustments.
