1 Chapter of VTCI Publication of the LONG ISLAND THUNDERBIRD CLUB JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2018 John Bianco s 1987 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe Having spent most of my teen years growing up during the 80 s, it was a great thing to witness the resurgence of automotive performance and styling through new technologies. My love of Fords was happenstance having grown up a household with Generals parked in the garage. My brother was manager of a Ford dealership and I was enamored by the latest showroom beauties he would bring home. Although I would come to own many a Mustang throughout the years, I had always looked back on perhaps the sexiest of 80 s Fords the Turbo Coupe. Flash forward three decades and I would come to behold a love gone by. My 87 Turbo Coupe was newly purchased by a gentleman from Minnesota on March 27, 1987 as a retirement gift for himself. He drove the car sparingly, accumulating only 26,063 miles on the car before he succumbed to Parkinson disease last year. His widow brought the car, her late husband s baby to the Ford dealer in Minnesota, where I had discovered the Coupe while surfing online. Since it had sat for some time, a complete tune was done on the car as well as the replacement of all belts, including the timing belt, cam and crank seals. This Bird is even optioned with Ford s Premium Sound, which included the graphic equalizer holy 80s! Equipped with the cast Lima-built 2.3 I4 EFI intercooled turbo, this 9 th Gen Aerobird is this man-child s time machine. 1

3 Wishing You an Old Fashioned Holiday Season And a Bright and Happy New Year! & We have Been Invited to a Long Island Ducks Game in August & Breakfast with the Boss - February 11th Holiday Party/Saturday, January 6, 2018/Our Annual Trek to Irv & Josephine s Inn of Happiness: Well, it almost snowed on us again, but we lucked out. Baby, it was cold outside! I know how cold it was, however, on Saturday night January 6 th at Nocello s, there was food, drink, and lots of singing and dancing in the aisles. Also, there was an abundance of warmth in the room! Frani and I enjoyed the evening along with Mr. Fleming, John and Joy Frisebee, Peter and Ursula Lang, Bob and Mary Marketta, Bert and Joyce Nardello plus four of their friends, Paul and Felicia Rosina PLAY BALL Long Island Ducks: On November 30 th I received an from Anthony Rubino, Group Sales Manager for the Long Island Ducks. He would like us, as a club and our Thunderbirds, to come to one of the Ducks games. Since we do not have a location in August for an outdoor meeting I thought this could happen. There are three Saturday night games in August starting at 6:35 with fireworks after the game. Keep in mind this is not a freebee but if we get enough people interested we will get a reduced rate for the game. Our cars will be parked in front of the stadium and security will be watching them during the game. So, if you re interested in getting involved, and it s definitely something different, please reach out to me. The three Saturday dates in August are: 4 th, 11 th and the 25 th. Sad News: Long time ITC member and a really great lady, Kitty Mummert passed away on Wednesday, December 19 th. I had the pleasure of knowing Kitty and her late husband Norm....Two really great people and she will be missed. See the extra pages for her obit. NEXT CLUB GET TOGETHER & DATE CHANGE Breakfast with the Boss: Sunday, February 11 th /South Bay Diner in Lindenhurst: For this club - an annual tradition, and if Mother Nature cooperates bring your Bird. Game plan is to meet at 9 AM at the diner, which is located on Sunrise Highway across from Babylon Town Hall. In case you get lost: about a ¼ mile east of Wellwood Avenue and on the south side of Sunrise Highway. The ITC at its Worst: It has been a while since I beat up the current ITC administration - mainly their guy who calls himself the president. Notice the lower case p - but never say never. In the extra pages of this edition of Bird Talk there is a list made up by Jim Rugg, a former Board Member of the ITC. The list contains former winners of the prestige s Presidents and Schatz Award. The majority of these winners are now former ITC members. Does this draw a picture for you? When YKW does not need you any more, you are put out with the garbage. A Little History on These Two Awards: Dick Schatz was a former Script Editor (ITC newsletter) and one of the founding fathers of the club. So, to be picked for this award is a great honor. Now for the President s Award. To get picked for this award you must have done something above and beyond for the club. Example; Paul Rosina won this award back 2013, and the Schatz award back in 2011, for his efforts at many of the ITC conventions. However, as you can see, he is now a former member. Now for a period at the end of the sentence. The current President gave himself the President s award in Harrisburg two years ago. As Warner Wolfe would say: Give me a break. They should have given him the shovel award because of his enormous ego. Hemmings Classic Car Magazine/February 2018 Issue: Some really excellent articles in this edition. One deals with joining a marque car club, and the other article deals with some interesting definitions. Some of these are repeats from past issues of HCC, but it s always good to touch base again with them. This is why marquee car clubs exist to assist individuals in restoring a car to its as- delivered condition. Just about every club has individuals who are available to assist other members. Ex; Paul Rosina, Frank Sig Signoriello, and Bob Ceraso. Some clubs have even created restoration guides. Most marquee clubs have a certain camaraderie members enjoy helping each other get a car on the road and keeping it there. In fact, the above does not get a better feeling in the hobby than knowing you ve helped a fellow car enthusiast. Continued on Page 10 3

10 Continued From Page 3 President s Message Confused Definitions Just a Few It s an Antique if it s 25 years old: This is perhaps the biggest falsehood of all time. Just because many car clubs, such as the AACA, state that a car has to be 25 years old to qualify for admission, that doesn t mean that something is an authentic antique, or classic for that matter. There are many different classifications, depending on the year, make and model of the car. The general consensus is that cars of the early postwar era can be referred to as classics, but usually anything built from the mid-70 s onward is simply called a collector car. Therefore, all desirable old cars are collector cars; however, not all collector cars are classics or antiques. Mint Condition : The only thing that can be labeled mint is an uncirculated coin that has never been touched. Even cars that have just rolled off the assembly line were not mint as that had handprints all over them. So let s toss this overused, mislabeled term aside and replace it with something more appropriate and more truthful; how s excellent showroom condition sound? New Member: John Bianco from Floral Park with his 1987 Thunderbird Turbo Couple. John is also our theme car for this issue. Suffolk County United Veterans in Yaphank: On Sunday, December 10 th our club, T.O.N.Y., and a few other car clubs met at the Vets Home in Yaphank.Very cold today, and no hanging outside to BS. Last year we were spoiled with t shirt weather. No toys today. From the LITC: Bob Marketta, and yours truly, the club donated close to $ in new clothes. a great cause. There should have been more people and clubs involved. Maybe next year.. President s Council Meeting/Sunday, February 18, 2018: This year s meeting is being hosted by the North Fork Cruisers in Rocky Point. A full report will be in next month s newsletter s President s Message. Our Next Indoor Club Meeting is Tuesday, February 20, Bertucci s Restaurant in Melville/Guest Speaker: Start time is 7 p.m. and we will have a guest speaker. The gentlemen who photographed my car for Old Cars Weekly, Frank LiBretto, will be our guest speaker. Old Time Radio Shows: I m a big fan of old time radio shows. The Lone Ranger, Gunsmoke, Richard Diamond Private Eye staring Dick Powell, Green Hornet, and lastly Johnny Dollar Insurance Investigator. If anybody is interested, I will be giving away some of the CD s for the afore mentioned shows. If you want a set, and I will bring them to the next meeting, you must let me know what you want. First come first served Event and Meeting Calendar: Check out page #4 and #6. Note that the Kings Park St. Patty s Day Parade is the first Saturday in March. If you want to be in the parade via your Bird you need to let me know. Remember - Breakfast with the Boss on Sunday, February 11 th at South Bay Diner in Lindenhurst. Also, note Sunday, April 15 th for the Cruise to Orient Point with Mr. Carberry and the Empire Galaxie Car Club..just a few dates to keep in mind! Valentine s Day/Wednesday, February 14, 2018: How important is this day? What does Webster say about important? 2017 in Retro Spec & Thank You: Looking back at 2017 I would say we had a pretty good year. Had a great car show, and we are already starting to make plans for this year. I met some really nice folks during the year, who are now my friends. I want to thank our Board for their time and staying on top of things. A special thank you to Paul Rosina for keeping Big Bird alive and well, and another attaboy to Arlene Swenson from TONY - my unofficial publisher assistant who reads and edits my President s message, and consistently offers suggestions for my content. for Frani and me - two new Grandchildren - Noah (we call him No No) and Logan. for me - staying vertical and above ground is a challenge Club Dues is Due Now: Just a friendly reminder that your dues for 2018 are due now. 13 KITTY MUMMERT INTERNATIONAL THUNDERBIRD CLUB It is with great sadness that I must report that Kitty Mummert passed away on December 19 th. Kitty was a MATC Board member and past treasurer. She was also a former ITC treasurer. Because of continuing health issues she had recently moved from her long time home in Pennsylvania to reside with her son in New York State. Kitty, and her late husband Norm, were stalwarts in the TBird hobby for over 40 years. They were original members of the Mid-Atlantic Thunderbird Club, and founding members of ITC. Norm was fondly known in the hobby as Mr. Thunderbird for his technical knowledge of TBirds, especially the models. Norm and Kitty had a collection of over 30 TBirds before his passing. Kitty was always the perfect hostess, providing a warm welcome to new members of both MATC and ITC. She coordinated the MATC Christmas Party at Dobbin House in Gettysburg, PA, for over 20 years. She was actively involved in the planning and coordination of many ITC conventions. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her or had the opportunity to meet and know her. Arrangements are as follows: Viewing: Wednesday, December 27, from 6pm to 8pm at the LeRoy Leber Funeral Home, 2290 School Street in York (Shiloh), PA Funeral service: First United Methodist Church, 200 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA., at 10 AM on Thursday, December 28. There will be graveside services on Friday at 10am at the Prospect Hill Cemetery in York. Condolences may be sent to her family in c/o her son: Greg Mummert, 1280 Blood Road Cowlesville, NY Skip Panowitz

20 GROUP LIFT PURCHASE Is anyone interested in buying a 4-post lift for their garage? I am refurbishing my garage, and have done some research on lifts. I have settled on the Backyard Buddy 7,000lb. Standard Lift. BYB can store 2 cars in the space of one, requiring just 9' wide, 16' long, 9' ceiling height, and a 120V outlet to store one car above another car, where the lower car is 60" at its highest point or less (e.g. my 1970 Boss 302 on top of my 2013 Boss 302, for example). The lift is made in Warren, OH, has the best construction & lift locking system in my opinion, offers jacks, drip pans, and wheels for movement, and offers the best warranty I can find. Go to their website & see for yourself It is also probably the most expensive 4-post lift at $4,595. But I want one! I would like to assemble a group of 10 or more car guys living here on Long Island who would like to buy this lift this summer. Then I intend to take the order to the All Ford Nationals (June 2-4), where Backyard Buddy will have a booth. My theory is in addition to the $ show special, I can negotiate a volume price delivered to one "area". By negotiating a group purchase discount added to the reduced freight and the show special, I am going to try to knock $ 500-1,000 off the standard retail price of the lift. Please realize (1) You will still have to pay someone to install the lift at your home ($500-1,000), (2) You will have to modify your garage door tracks to clear the lift (~$200), (3) There is no guarantee of the final price; I can only try to get the $1,000 discount I seek. But 10 units should get us some discount; 20+ units will entice the manufacture to give a substantial discount. As an additional incentive, I would invite the Backyard Buddy Marketing team to come to Long Island and talk to / interview those who participated for their advertising testimonials. Please contact me by phone or (below) with any questions, giving me your name, your address, phone, and address as confirmation you are willing to spend the necessary funds in June-July. Thank you!
