1 Chapter of VTCI Publication of the LONG ISLAND THUNDERBIRD CLUB SEPTEMBER 2017 FRANK SKIVANEK WINDOW COUPE I bought this car four years ago & found it in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey through Craigs List add. It has a 383 stroker motor, 4 wheel disc brakes, AC, PS, tilt wheel, & 3 speed transmission. I paid 39k & value it today at50k Its truly a fun car to drive & a trophy winner. 1

3 Cruizin for a Cure Sunday, September 10, Old Country Road Westbury Lehigh Valley Thunderbird Convention September 7 th to the 10 th The Return of Bagels with the Boss Saturday, September 23 Lee Myles in Roslyn Heights Guest Speakers for our September Meeting Cruizin for a Cure/Sunday, September 10, 2017: Just a heads up that this show is our next big club event. It s at a new location in Westbury Old Country Road, just a stone s throw from the Wantagh Parkway. FYI, for this year, because of the change of venue, our meeting location is the 7-11 and Dunkin Donuts right next to each other on Old Country Road - about a ¼ mi. east of the Wantagh Parkway, and the show. We will meet there before the show, at 7 A.M. and then caravan over to the show which is only a few minutes away. Pre-registration is $ see page #9. If you get your money in before September 3 rd, you will save $5.00. If not, it s $30.00 day of show you get a theme T-shirt, and goodie bag. Last year, I think we had close to ten cars. Let s see if we can double that this year. Remember, this is a non-judged show. I know it s going to be difficult for some of you to deal with that but it s for a good cause. Bagels with the Boss Again/Saturday, September 23, Lee Myles Transmission in Roslyn Hts: Dave Unger has invited us back for another run at his shop and breakfast. Hours are 10 A.M. till about 1-ish. LM s is located at 50 Mineola Ave. in Roslyn Hts. LIE to exit 37 and head north for about ½ mile. Please RSVP so I know you re coming. Lehigh Valley Thunderbird Convention/September 7 th to the 10 th : If you re looking to travel with your Bird, this is the place to go in September. The application is in the extra pages of this newsletter. For me and the Big Guy really not sure what I m doing. Also, it is a VTCI Regional event, and based on who is running it, it should be a lot of fun. Guest Speaker/Touch of Color: I have invited Tom, Mike and Jerry from Touch of Color to talk about what they do. TOC is a company that deals with paint chips on your vehicle, among other items. I had them touch up my Mustang and they did an unbelievable job. I was so impressed that I invited them to come and talk about what they do. Our show: Final Show Numbers: This year we donated $1, to Building Homes for Heroes, and both clubs also received a portion of the net proceeds. Front Cover & I Made a Mistake: Frank Skrivanek and his 34 Ford is our theme car for this month - that s the good news. The bad news is that I left Frank s name out in last month s winners list at our show. Frank came in first in his class! I apologized to Frank at the South Huntington Library on Saturday, July 22 nd. It s a gorgeous street rod. Looks good, and sounds even better! Sunday, August 6, Smithtown Heritage Society Rock & Roll Car Show: Great weather today - it brought the world out to play. As in the past, we all met at 7:30 in the morning and then caravanned over to the show. Let s call it the Kings Park Core as it was in full force today, but we had only one winner, Frank Skivanek and his window coupe (see the front cover) who placed second in his class. For the rest of us, thanks for showing up. Never has so many won so few. After being in this hobby for over a hundred years you cannot take things for granted. Because you work to get you car ready for your next show, there is no guarantee that you will win anything. I m a prime example for what I just wrote, but you just need to keep plugging along, and enjoy the company of your friends who go with you to shows. Wednesday, September the VA Hospital in Northport: This is an annual event for the VA and us. Hours are 11 A.M. to about 3 P.M. There is no charge, & there is free food for all. Based on what I saw last year, early arrival should be at 9 A.M. If you re interested in coming and want more info, please contact me. Sunday September 24, 2017/AHRC Car Show/ 2900 Veterans Highway in Bohemia: A bunch of us are thinking of going. It s a non-trophy event, but it s a good cause. If you re interested in going and parking together, please contact me. Next Indoor Club Meeting for 2017: Tuesday, September 19 Bertucci s: We are back inside, and remember the club buys pizza. So bring your summer stories, and let s Rock and Roll and You re Welcome! 3

9 Long Island Cruizin For A Cure Sunday September 10th Long Island Thunderbird Club Attend This Event Sandy Kane Event Chair and a Prostate Cancer survivor Long Island Cruizin For A Cure PO Box 604 Jericho, New York info@licruizinforacure.com LICruiz ( ) With the uncertainty surround the SEARS location for 2017 due to the sale of the property, Long Island Cruizin has made the decision to relocate and reduce the size of the event to make it more manageable. Our new location 1400 Old Country Road at the Old Country Road West Exit of the Wantagh Parkway Is all concrete no need to worry about a wet or dirty field Still offers the free PSA test provided by Winthrop University Hospital to all men over 40 Will still have Fonzie & Cha Chi hosting the event and spinning the oldies Will have a food court and a selection of vendors Will have another great event tee shirt designed by our resident artist John P The major difference is that we are limited by space to 450 exhibitor cars and will be closing down Pre-registration once we reach that point. If you pre-register your space will be held until 10:30AM and if you want to park together as a club you must come in together and all be pre-registered. There is a parking lot across the street as well as a Starbucks where you can all meet to come in, but The important thing to remember is PRE-REGISTER!! 9

17 GROUP LIFT PURCHASE Is anyone interested in buying a 4-post lift for their garage? I am refurbishing my garage, and have done some research on lifts. I have settled on the Backyard Buddy 7,000lb. Standard Lift. BYB can store 2 cars in the space of one, requiring just 9' wide, 16' long, 9' ceiling height, and a 120V outlet to store one car above another car, where the lower car is 60" at its highest point or less (e.g. my 1970 Boss 302 on top of my 2013 Boss 302, for example). The lift is made in Warren, OH, has the best construction & lift locking system in my opinion, offers jacks, drip pans, and wheels for movement, and offers the best warranty I can find. Go to their website & see for yourself It is also probably the most expensive 4-post lift at $4,595. But I want one! I would like to assemble a group of 10 or more car guys living here on Long Island who would like to buy this lift this summer. Then I intend to take the order to the All Ford Nationals (June 2-4), where Backyard Buddy will have a booth. My theory is in addition to the $ show special, I can negotiate a volume price delivered to one "area". By negotiating a group purchase discount added to the reduced freight and the show special, I am going to try to knock $ 500-1,000 off the standard retail price of the lift. Please realize (1) You will still have to pay someone to install the lift at your home ($500-1,000), (2) You will have to modify your garage door tracks to clear the lift (~$200), (3) There is no guarantee of the final price; I can only try to get the $1,000 discount I seek. But 10 units should get us some discount; 20+ units will entice the manufacture to give a substantial discount. As an additional incentive, I would invite the Backyard Buddy Marketing team to come to Long Island and talk to / interview those who participated for their advertising testimonials. Please contact me by phone or (below) with any questions, giving me your name, your address, phone, and address as confirmation you are willing to spend the necessary funds in June-July. Thank you!
