Madhukar Malhotra Date: November 17, 2017 (Friday) Time: 6.30 p.m. Venue: Hotel Shivalikview, Sector 17, Chandigarh Commercialization of Media Our weekly meeting on November 10, 2017 had R ann Aruti Nayar as the keynote speaker to talk about Commercialization of Media. President Rtn. Dr. Rita Kalra welcomed her. She is the wife of our Joint Secretary Rtn. Prof. Rana Nayar. She was formally introduced by Rtn. Dr. Manisha Sahni. Aruti is Assistant Editor in one of the leading newspapers of India, The Tribune, where she has been working for the last 26 years. She studied at Laureate and St. Bede s in Shimla. A post graduate in English and Psychology from Panjab University and Himachal University, she is an excellent orator and gives talks on R ann Aruti Nayar motivation, development issues and women empowerment. She had addressed our meeting on September 23, 2016, giving an interesting talk on Women and Emotional Empowerment. She has also spoken well in other events of our club. Talking about Commercialization of Media, R ann Aruti Nayar gave a balanced view of the matter which we observe on daily basis through print and electronic media. She said media has a voice these days and that it does really echo, whether it is used, mis-used or abused. She shared her experience of 26 years and also explained the shift she had seen during these years and the impact of competition between various media agencies, which has led to lapses, and even to mis-reporting. Some media agencies have even become derelict in its obligation to the society to serve as a platform to voice the concerns of the citizens and shape public opinion, degrading its moral authority as a watchdog of the administration and establishment. Media now means marketing, opinion maker / changer, reacting and creating sensation. Actual reporting may go to the back seat. Electronic media reporters have become anchors holding loud talk shows on their channels, and many of them are celebrities. One of the prime tasks of media agencies is to generate revenue for their survival, but this should be done without adverse journalism. If done with professional ethics it can be justified. Good journalism keeps the government activities under check. It can take care about the rights and freedom of citizens with accurate and balanced reporting as a rule in their media group. He also referred to the Valedictory Function on June 23, 2017 when the chief guest of the event PRID Yash Das appreciated the feelings expressed by Rotarians and R anns, and in particular admired Aruti Nayar for her impression about the good that Rotary has been doing. Anil Puri with Teresa Puri, Secretary Rtn. Marilynn Chintella with Mark Chintella had visited some of our projects and were highly impressed. PP Anil also congratulated us as India is a polio free nation. PP Pallav Mukherjee met an old couple (severely burnt mother and aged father) and feels that we could contribute towards their desperate attempt to get their daughter married off on 20/11, at the Community Centre in Saini Vihar, Baltana. Contributions would be welcome in cash or kind to Pallav to help this genuinely needy family.
