1 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Well, 2019 has been officially kicked off with some wonderful tours. Ed arranged the annual train trip to Old Town Sacramento. Pat & Bob coordinated with Bill and put on a great back roads drive over to the Dutch Goose which included a visit to the Alpine Rail Road in Portola Valley. Some of us braved the hill and took our T's up to what was once Jacques Li lefield's Tank Museum. To say it was a hill is a bit of an understatement as it reminded me of an Endurance Run. Nevertheless, those Tin Lizzie's climbed and climbed all the way to the top. If you missed any of these, there is no need to fear. Bob & Pat has set up a Sculptures, Soup and Puzzles tour for February 9th. If you never been to Pat's soup kitchen for lunch, you don't know what you are missing. Dust off those T's and get them ready for some touring. Our two biggest events of the year are the Endurance Run (Sunday, June 9, 2019) and An- que Autos in History Park (Sunday, September 22, 2019). As always, these events are looking for volunteers to help out. We also have our 50th anniversary party (Saturday, April 6, 2019) which is just around the corner. RSVP with Jean Boyden so you don't miss this special day. It is with great sadness that we say "so long" to long- me member Genelle Azevedo. She will most certainly be missed for her many poems and delicious apple pies. We wish to express our deepest condolences to the Azevedo family. Remember, it s the people, cars and places that make this such a special club. We have many miles to put on our Flivver s and many places of interest to visit. 2 RECENT TOURS LAST CHANGE TOUR December 30, 2018 Seven T's, an A, and seven moderns found their way to the Last Chance Restaurant in Santa Clara, the appropriate des na on for the last chance to get your driving patch for the year. That's about 27 people, not too bad for a holiday weekend. Time to chat and visit and extend holiday wishes. Burgers, pizza, and fish and chips got turned out in remarkably quick me before the mood turned serious. POOL!!! Teams of two formed and were entered on the bracket sheet. Quarters were found for the pool tables and the games ensued. The sharks quickly became apparent and two teams advanced to the finals. Lightning Larry and Babyface Blaze took on the Beach Boys. It was a hard fought contest and in the end Jus n Beach pocketed the final 8 ball. But the ques on remained, who won, was there a scratch? The referee was nowhere to be found, ea ng cookies in the other room? Maybe a replay will be necessary next year. Anyway, it was good entertainment, the crowd loved it. And there is something special about this restaurant, my T does not leak oil while parked there!!! How can that be? I think some elves were at work there. Okay, next driving tour is January 26, who will get the first driving patch in 2019 and maybe a special award from Pat. Bob Meneely 2

4 RECENT TOURS OLD TOWN SACRAMENTO TOUR JANUARY 12, 2019 SACRAMENTO TRAIN TRIP, JUST AN ALL OUT FUN SPRING/WINTER DAY 4 Have you ever been on board ship long enough to where you get back to shore and find yourself s ll rolling with the movement of the ship? Well, I spent so much me standing and walking around talking to friends during our train trip that when I got home last night I found myself rocking back and forth with the rhythm of the coach that I wasn t on! Fortunately this morning I m just about back to normal...well, my normal. So it all started yesterday (Sat. Jan. 19) around 7:20 AM as members from 10 old car clubs (Bay Area Horseless Carriage, Nor. CA. Classic Car Club, Nor. CA. Rolls Royce owners Club, Santa Clara Valley and South Valley Model T Ford Clubs, Mid Peninsula Old Time Auto Club, Greater Bay Vintage Chevrolet Club, Mission Trails Early Ford V8 Club, Pacific Coast Durant Club) began arriving at the Amtrak sta on in San Jose where we eventually boarded 46 Passengers on the #724 Capitol Corridor Express train headed for Sacramento, and boy what a great bunch! Everyone was really upbeat, prepared to have a fun me. Most showed up way early as our train didn t depart un l 8:15 AM, which caught me off guard and I had everyone s cket. Yeah, I wasn t ready, but fortunately it only took me a couple minutes to get my act together and a er that it all went smooth as silk. In order to get the incredible low round trip fare that we got, we had to have six passengers to each cket and the passengers names are on the cket. Those six people have to board together. The tough part of that might have been ge ng all six together for boarding, as everyone s arriving at the sta on at random mes and other than your traveling partner there was no advance no ce who your boarding with. So when you arrive you re told who you re boarding with, then have to find your boarding group. Believe it or not it really went smooth. The up side to that process is, you may be on the same cket with people from different clubs and therefore make new old car friends. Everyone was so compa ble, it couldn t have gone be er. Once you re on board you re on your own, don t have to stay with your cket group and only have to meet with them for the return trip boarding. Somewhat typical of Amtrak, they announced the track number that we were to board at, and that the train is ready for boarding. So we all followed direc ons outside to track 7 only to stand alongside of the train and wait for about 10 minutes or so for them to open the doors. Fortunately nobody needed to be reminded, hang loose, have fun! Key words especially when you re traveling by train. SCVMTFC members boarding in San Jose were, Ron Beam and his father Roger, Jim Boyden, Rich and Debbie Hershey, Ted and Dorothy Johnson, Troed Johnson and Karen and I. Once on board, we had a good conductor, she got all of us on the same coach and directed our group passengers that we picked up on the way, to our coach, except that by the me we reached Mar nez where we picked up the last of our group, our coach was full so they overflowed into the coach ahead. Early into the trip, traveling through the marshes in South Fremont the train

5 RECENT TOURS (CONT.) OLD TOWN SACRAMENTO TOUR JANUARY 12, came to a halt in the middle of nowhere. A er a few minutes I brought out the old ukulele, passed out the words to all the old me song favorites and with the help of Rob Guzze a and his ukulele we had a great sing along. Some Forty minutes or so later we began to move again. Word finally came down that Amtrak crews were doing unexpected track maintenance. So as we headed East, well really North at this point, we picked up nine more of our group in Hayward, (Rolls Royce and Model T club) ten in Oakland (Classic Car and Rolls Royce). A er Oakland we rolled on through some of the most beau ful parts of the trip between Pinole and Mar- nez as we traveled along the edge of the San Pablo Bay, Carquinez Strait, Suisun and Grizzly Bays. Before crossing the bridge over Suisun Bay we stopped in Mar nez and picked up our remaining twenty four passengers, Bay area Horseless Carriage, Classic Car, and Rolls Royce owners Club. Had two cancella ons in San Jose, two in Oakland and Two in Mar nez due them being too sick to travel. That miserable cold is a bad one and did a lot of us in. I was just recovering from my s nt with it and in fact started losing my voice again during the sing along. A er leaving Mar nez I got a rough count of those that were going to join us for lunch at Joe s Crab Shack in Old Town Sacramento and called in a revised number of 40 for lunch. Fortunately Joe s is a big place because 40 wasn t enough, so when we got there we had to move a bunch of tables together to get us all seated. They were amazingly fast ge ng us all seated and served. If you haven t been there it s really a party place, right on the river, lots of fun with the servers performing, never a dull moment, varied menu good food. A er lunch people sca ered, some went to the train and car museums, Crocker Art museum and a lot of us just wandered through Sacramento Old Town shops. The weather was perfect, mostly sunny, no wind and just plain pleasant. Time went by pre y fast and by 3:30 or so those of us that boarded in San Jose headed back to the Train Sta on to board the #743 depar ng at 3:55 PM to head home. The Mar nez group took the next train, depar ng at 4:55 PM, as they had dinner reserva ons scheduled at a favorite Mexican restaurant in downtown Mar nez. Our San Jose Boarding went well, and off we went. Karen and I got off in Oakland and drove back to Mar nez so we could have dinner with the Mar nez group as we were overdue for a good Mexican dinner, and it was excellent! I know the following sounds kinda corny but it s true. The meal topped off a wonderful mild winter day spent with a great bunch of like minded people ready to just have a good me together, and we sure did! Ed Archer

7 RECENT TOURS PORTOLA VALLEY January 26, 2019 It is true people make tours successful. I was so pleased to have so many members show up for the Portola Valley Alpine Rail Road Tour this January 26 th. Bob and Pat Meneely were in charge of the Model T members coming from Rancho and Bob Moll (Chair of the Friendship Day) led the Mid-Peninsula Old Time Auto Club members. A short tour through Portola Valley preceded the lunch stop at The Dutch Goose and other local restaurants. Scou ng recon of the perils to be had on the steep hill was done by Dan and Steve Gulko in their Model T. We were all thankful for their efforts. I was pleased to see the Model T s reach the Rail Road area without any breakdowns (YEAH). I hope all enjoyed the tour as much as I did. Thanks for all the par cipants who made this event possible. There is no fee to enter. Please drive your modern or an que vehicle directly to the Museum. This is a rain or shine event. Please note the following requirements: No children under the age of 12. No photos. No pets allowed. This world class private collec- on of automobiles includes Buga, Alfa Romeo, Duesenberg, Pierce Arrow, Packard, Ferrari to men on a few and is a dream come true for an que, vintage and classic car enthusiasts. 17 ANNOUNCING: THE 50thSANTA CLARA VALLEY MODEL T FORD CLUB LOWLAND TOUR June 8-9, 2019 The 50th Lowland Tour will once again be held in conjunction with our 50 th Cross Country Speedster Endurance Run on Sunday, June 9 th, In addition to the big event on Sunday, all entrants are invited to come a day early for a short warm-up tour at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2019 from Tiffany Ford to San Juan Bautista at no additional registration fee. So, plan to join us in Hollister, CA for a leisurely weekend of vintage automotive touring. Saturday night lodging is available at the SureStay Hotel by Best Western in Hollister close to our sponsor, Tiffany Ford. Reference the Model T Club when you call for the best price. We will have a hospitality room open at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday evening at Tiffany Ford for relaxation, chatting and great snacks. So, come join us on Saturday if you can, and if not, we will see you Sunday for sure. This event will bring together more than 45 restored and original vintage automobiles and 35 vintage speedsters. This is a return to the charm and pleasure of leisurely touring with vintage touring cars, vintage speedsters, and vintage clothing. This event is open to all makes and models of restored and original early vintage automobiles pre On Sunday, June 9, we will join the Endurance Run at the start line in downtown Hollister. After the National Anthem, the announcer will say, "Gentlemen start your engines" and there will be a mighty roar as the green flag waves them off. Then we'll be off for our own slower, more leisurely run through the countryside to rejoin the speedsters for a luncheon at Tiffany Ford. Lowland tour participants will receive maps, directions, programs, coffee stop, event dashplaque and most importantly, unbelievable memories (bring your camera!).this event is all about the fun and pleasure of a vintage automotive event. Even if you and your friends are unable to join the tour, please join us at the start or finish line just for the rare opportunity to see and hear the cars in action and watch the frenzied drivers and mechanics perform their endurance run tasks. 21 UPCOMING TOURS/EVENT ANTIQUE AUTOS IN HISTORY PARK SEPTEMBER 22, 2019 Greetings Antique Auto Enthusiast, The largest annual antique auto show in the West is scheduled for Sunday, September 22, Save the date and also pass the date to your club members and friends. The 19th annual Antique Autos in History Park (AAHP), 635 Phelan Ave., San José, CA a Living History Day... is presented by the Santa Clara Valley Model T Ford Club and History San José. AAHP welcomes all period correct pre-1946 vehicles. In addition to many antique vehicles, there will be participation by the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association, displays of Early Crafts and Antique Collectibles, a Dixieland Band, Dancers, Barbershop Quartet, Blacksmith Shop Demos, Trolley Rides, History San José Open Houses, Kids Activities, Food and more. Food will be served by Dicky s BBQ and will be Brisket & Chicken. Helen asked members to vote for their choice of three sides. Jean is taking sign up s which is limited to 80. Maria did a great job at the Los Gatos Children s Day Parade. Ed came down from Hayward to attend it but had to put the car away due to the rain. Allan & Lucy attended Mike Henessey s Toys for Tots and the Ainsley House. Visit to the Mozart Foundation Automobile Museum is set for March 16th. Membership: Maria reported 35 members renewed and she collected 3 additional renewals tonight. Send dues to Maria or to Mary and notify Maria. Tech & Safety: Jim Boyden - No report Librarian: Dick Hess - Brought some books and also has Jackets for sale Endurance Run & LowLand: Glenn Wildman May 29th Program deadline for Bob Mennely May 20th is the deadline for T-shirts June 1st deadline for Bob Tiffany for BBQ as well as coffee & donuts Glenn is looking for a co-chair and needs about volunteers AAHP (Antique Autos in History Park): Peder & Maria Jorgensen Allan has created the poster. Featured car will be the Durant. There will be used car lot again. First meeting at 7:00pm Jan 31st at the Jorgensen s. Need volunteers and Maria will be calling for volunteers. 24

33 Genelle Azevedo has gone to join her husband, George. She was 99 years young. Both her and George were longtime members of our club and will be greatly missed.
