Eastern Ontario HOG Chapter # 9007 Page 2 of 8 January Issue No. 01 Director's Note: A Christmas Poem 'Twas the night before Christmas, And not until Spring Would a motor be running, not even a Wing. The bikes are all sleeping, they're covered and warm, Batteries are tended, nylon covers their form. Riders were all nestled down snug in their beds, While visions of new chrome danced in their heads. And I in my hair glove, bike jacket and boots Out shoveling snow, and dreaming of scoots. Then from the horizon there came such a clatter My shovel I dropped, what could be the matter? Away up the hill, I slogged through the snow Looked up at the sky; where'd all that noise go? Then a throb from the heavens, like straight pipes so hearty Gave Summers' good thoughts, a loud Rider s party. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear But a Hog Ultra Classic, Red trailer in rear! With a little old rider, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than a V-Rod his Ultra came on, And he whistled, and shouted, and sang out his song; "Now, Springer! Now, Dyna! On Ultra and Softail! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now RIDE away! RIDE away! RIDE away all!" So up to the house-top that Ultra it flew With a trailer of goodies, and ole' St. Nick too And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The rumble and thunder of pipes that gave proof. I ran in the house, boots thumping around, And in came St. Nick all bearded and round Dressed all in black leather, from do-rag to boot His chaps were all tarnished with road grime and soot; A T-bag of goodies he'd flung on his back And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack His shades -- how they twinkled! his do-rag how scary! With chains intertwined, through skulls that were cherry! He spoke not a word, but went straight to my ride And fixed it with Chrome, Horsepower and Pride And giving the peace sign with bikers' good cheer Strode off to his Ultra rumbling near He sprang on the saddle, his gloves on the bars A wheelie he threw; then off towards the stars I heard him exclaim, as my chest swelled with pride, "MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD RIDE!" 3 Eastern Ontario HOG Chapter # 9007 Riding Sturgis Submitted by Dalton Brown Thirteen days and 7,030 km s later our second trip to Sturgis SD is over and we are finally home safe and sound. We, Dona and I, my cousin Owen and his wife Sheri had a great trip. The outbound trip consisted of a few Interstates to get around Chicago and then once we hit Indiana westward we used U.S. and local highways. With speed limits on these of mph we made better time without the traffic congestion of the interstates. We also got to see a lot of small towns and good farming country with the presence of Eau de Swine every once in a while. Coming back we used the Interstates and the Lake Express Ferry from Milwaukee WI., to Muskegon MI. This saved us about 450 kms and 6 hours. Page 3 of 8 January Issue No. 01 A short article from our trip to Sturgis [2010]. May be of value for anyone who has not been, or a remembrance for those who have. We had a great trip. - Dalton This trip we stayed in Hot Springs and did the runs that we had missed in 2008, like Devils Tower, Spearfish Canyon and the Badlands. The Badlands were 110 F HOT in the shade. HOT, HOT, HOT! When touring, I keep a HD cooler on my back seat filled with drinks and power bars on ice and we used it all. The Group Sturgis and area was busy as usual and hot in the 90 s each day. We went at the start of the rally instead of the end this time but it was just as busy with thousands and thousands of bikes. We also picked up some new accessories for our bikes at the MC vendors located at the Black Hills HD dealer in Rapid City. HD moved their pavilion to downtown Sturgis from Rapid City?? It was so congested and loud that if we didn t want to get our HD pin we would not have gone into the town of Sturgis. It was just nuts. We couldn t even wash our bikes there were so many in line. Outside of Hot Springs There were a couple of collisions we came across. One was in Spearfish Canyon at the waterfall where traffic was congested as people were off bikes taking pictures. A rider from Toronto, without a helmet on, apparently was looking at the scenery and came up too fast (maybe 40 km/h), on some stopped bikes and the rider grabbed a whole lot of front brake and went down sustaining significant head injuries. Traffic is so heavy that you really need to look where you are going all the time. The second was on an off ramp just before Milwaukee when a bike, towing what looked to be a home made trailer, went off onto the ramp at about km/h as the rider felt something wrong with the trailer. There again he grabbed a handful of front brake going down hard, jack-knifing the trailer and sliding

Eastern Ontario HOG Chapter # 9007 Page 4 of 8 January Issue No. 01 into the ditch. The passenger likely sustained a broken femur there, but she was wearing a helmet and suffered no head injuries. The driver thought that he had a flat which caused the collision but the rear tire only went flat when the bike was down and the trailer crushed it. The tires were bald as well, even though he said he had put new ones on before he left Connecticut. It was good that it was on the off ramp and not on the Interstate at 110 km/h. The Fool of the trip driving award occurred when we were westbound toward Sturgis on I-90, west of Rapid City. Our three bikes were in the passing lane doing were riding staggered about 2-3 seconds apart at the time. All I saw was an old long haired guy on a bike with ape hangers and no helmet. It does surprise you when someone invades your space without warning. The car drivers there were all good, giving you lots of room while it seemed that some motorcycle guys were the problem. The area offers great riding with awesome scenery and winding curvy roadways, just lots of vehicles. Speed and distance control as well as keeping your head up, helmets on and being alert makes for a great trip and coming home in one piece. - Dalton between mph as the driving lane was congested. This rider came up from behind us and used our 3 bikes as pylons as he weaved his way through. 5 Eastern Ontario HOG Chapter # 9007 Page 5 of 8 January Issue No. 01 My Arkansas, USA Adventure Submitted by Hermann Kerckhoff August 11 th /2010 to August 21 = 11 days! A friend told me once: "the Ozark Mountains in Northern Arkansas are very beautiful!" It stayed with me. Since 1992 we, my wife Christa and I have had the privilege to visit all 4 corners of our vast and scenic continent, from Newfoundland, Canada. to Alaska, USA. From San Diego, California to Key-West, Florida; all on our modified, light touring, 1990 FatBoy. No wonder, this Ozark bug was planted in my brain and had to be explored. I gave it 14 days, allowing time to do the scenic route. This time I had to do it alone, my dear wife was just released from the Ottawa Heart Institute with heart and lung failure, and no insurance would cover her. She loved the Harley rides in the past, but this time will have to dream of being there with my stories: Wed.Aug. 11 I m an early bird, a habit from years of rowing at dawn on the Rideau Canal, so at 6:30 a.m., loaded with camping gear and other stuff, I m on my way towards the Ogdensburg border crossing. Just a 5 minute, very friendly stop by the border control, and I m riding on scenic route # 12 East along the St. Lawrence River, in bright sunshine. The town of Clayton on Hwy. 12E stands out, with its location on the big St. Lawrence R., a beautiful marine-harbour, it s a busy tourist attraction. I continue on Hwy.# 3 S. to Oswego on Lake Ontario, a very scenic and well-paved highway, as are almost all highways I traveled on! I get to Seneca Falls, on the very long Cayuga Lake, and follow its shoreline South to Ithaca. This is obviously a wealthy, well-kept tourist region. Very pretty! Enjoyable riding with little traffic. Numerous State Parks invite for comfortable, reasonably priced(between $ 10 and $ 15 per night) camping, with clean, granite counter-top washrooms and hot showers. Wow, what a change from years ago, when S.P. s only had outhouses! Note: I can highly recommend this trip to Ithaca for a long weekend. Excellent roads, very scenic, good services and accommodations a win, win! But for me it's only a little ways of my trip: Arkansas is the destination, thousands of kilometers to go! Thurs.Aug.12 Up at 5:30, breaking camp, loading bike, takes me an hour plus ( I get better as the trip goes on). So by 7am I ll find a breakfast place, bacon and eggs, lots of coffee, the local newspaper, I m happy! And ready to tackle the day s riding until about 4 pm, when I look for another good camping place. I usually eat one good, full-course meal mid-day: Italian, Steakhouse, Mexican, Family-Restaurant, whatever looks most inviting on my route, and when hunger calls. For snacks I buy cashews, fruit and lots of water. Today I encounter my first rain, not heavy, but enough to get-out the rainsuit and clear-goggles. I m on a scenic-route, lots of curves and switch-backs, caution and slow-downs reduce my mileage. My motto: Safety First! 3 pm the sun shines again, it becomes hot, off comes all that rain-gear, and more time goes by. I cross into Pennsylvania via Elmira, Hwy.#14 S., via Williamsport, Lewisburg onto Hwy.#45 West towards Altoona, Penn., my next camping stop. That night reading at my campsite, studying the maps, I decide to take a little detour to my former whitewater hunting grounds, the Whitewater Mecca of Ohiopyle on the Youghiogeny River, near Somerset, Penn.. Here, in the late 1960 s I trained with the US National whitewater team for the 1972 Olympics. Proudly, I made the Canadian Olympic Team, paddling kayak for Canada, in my birth country Germany. Fri.Aug. 13 Up at 5:30, a wonderful buffet breakfast, but with a twist: for the first time in my life I was confronted by

Eastern Ontario HOG Chapter # 9007 Page 6 of 8 January Issue No. 01 the maitre d to pay for my meal in advance. At first I revolted, but had no choice if I wanted to eat. As I said, enter a heatwave, over 100 F! My Harley handles the heat well, I use Amsoil 20/50 Synthetic. it was a superb display of breakfast choices, for $ 8.95 US. Live and learn, I told myself. Rain again, but only shortly. The sun came out, Ohiopyle State Park presented itself in its most beautiful state, hills in lush green, whitewater, hundreds of tourists going rafting. I visited my old friend, reminiscing about the good, old, times! Visiting that part of Penn./West Virginia/Maryland is well worth a bikers effort: lots of scenic roads, very mountainous, sparse population/low traffic, Ghosttowns/hillbillys. Similar to the Smoky Mountains/Tenn., but closer to Ottawa! Back on Hwy.219 S., M.D., to Blackwater Falls S.P. near Thomas, M.D. Sat.Aug.14 Up again at 5:30, breakfast at 6:45 in a back-country, greasy-spoon diner. Friendly people, poor. This is coal mining, West Virginia Country. High unemployment, businesses closed, very depressing! No restaurants for miles, only cheap, fast-food outlets. The roads are challenging, hilly, twisting, rain-soaked, I make slow progress. In Lewisburg, W.V., I enjoy a very good lunch. A State Fair is happening here, traffic congestion, I change my route. For the better, on Hwy. 20, South of Hinton, W.V., I camp at Pipestem Resort S.P. Sun.Aug.15 Up at 5:30, my camp-take-down is like piece-work now, almost like bootcamp! Great! But finding a breakfast place, or any decent foodery is impossible in this depressed State of West Virginia. Riding through towns, stores boarded-up, factories in ruins, no people on the streets, it's an eye-opener how tough the times are here. But today, my 5 th day riding, becomes my best; no rain! Sunshine, and little do I know, from now on I A mention : I find the road-surfaces first-class, no litter along, no junk or car-wrecks(like in the 60 s). Traffic is fast, lots of pick-ups doing the max, rarely any troopers with radar-traps. Energy conservation = no sign! The population, in restaurants, overweight is an understatement! But the country-side is beautiful, the roads enjoyable, that s why I m here! And I love it! Hurrah! An Italian restaurant in my view, Heaven! It s 11:45 and I get a booth, leaving at 12:45 there is a lineup of 50 people, that s how good the food is! My aim for today is Standing Stone S.P. on Hwy.52 just West of Livingstone, Tenn.. Another great campsite, no bugs,( killed by the heat-wave). I talk to the Park Warden, a friendly, outgoing senior. I learn about America, the ups and downs. For most, the American Dream is just that, a dream! Often I hear: you Canadians don t like us! and Canada is too expensive! No wonder tourism from the South is way down in Canada. Mon.Aug.16 Today I hope to make Arkansas. I am a bit of a switchback burn-out! Already I plan to use the Interstate Highway system on my return-trip home. Today I pushed mileage and I made it! I m in Arkansas, in Crowley Ridge S.P., just West of Paragould, Ark.. I had two big River crossings today, the Tennessee R. and the Mississippi R., both gigantic waterways, more like large lakes. Now I m having trouble understanding the slang of Southerners, the drawl. I enjoy travelling alone, I can observe people uninterrupted, no social obligations. I get advice from a fellow biker, Rev-Tim, who pulled alongside me, and was very helpful. He pointed-out the best in Arkansas, and mostly, I followed his advice: Tues.Aug.17 Up at 5:30, it s still dark, daylight comes later as I travel westward. This State Park is the most disappointing one, lots of mosquitoes, no level ground to pitch a tent. But the washroom is first-class again. Rev-Tim recommended Moni s Restaurant for breakfast in Walnut Ridge, Ark. It s great, I sit at the counter among locals, mostly senior farmers. I do not understand much of their conversation, the drawl, but with me they fall into high English. They tell me it s the hottest summer since records are kept, in the 1800 s. On the bike it's bearable; cold is worse.

Eastern Ontario HOG Chapter # 9007 Page 7 of 8 January Issue No. 01 My destination is Harrison, Ark., another rec. from Rev-Tim. There I should look for the Hub, a meeting place for bikers. Searching, asking, riding, I finally scenic route through Missouri on Hwy.# 19 S, bypassing the City of St. Louis and East-bound on Interstate # 70. find the dump, an out-of-business pub/motel, wayout in the boonies. But the new owner, who is trying to revive the dinosaur, sends me to a fine, well-run private campground where I stay 2 nights. The facilities are again excellent, even a refreshing pool, all for $15/night. You just can t beat camping and the American service. Its 3 pm., my tent s up, I have time to do my first scenic tour in the Ozarks. I pick the 2-hour Jackson tour, a 50 mile loop, named for the sleepy, hillbilly town it's on. The Ozark Café on Main Street invites with rocking chairs on the sidewalk, locals watching, inside its 1950 s décor. An old-fashioned milk-shake just hits my taste. I just let the mind drift back in history this café has seen a lot of ups and downs, so it looks. Thurs.Aug.19 Now a routine, up at 5 am., pitch-black, but I know every grip and place. Truck-Depot breakfast with the early-bird farmers, quick map study of my marathonride planned for the day through 3 States, all on I.S.# 70. The weather is perfect, the morning ride scenic and enjoyable, then it s giv er until the body says: enough! 7 pm. I pull-into a Hampton-Inn Motel, my first on the trip. Deluxe it is but next morning paying my bill of $ 130, I decide my deluxe-camping is preferable (I know, many of you will find that hard to believe!). Back in Harrison I have dinner, then a short ride to my pool-side camp and reading the brochures for tomorrow s excursion. Wed.Aug.18 Wow! I can sleep-in! Up at 6 am. and a hop to Shoney s for breakfast. My plan for today is Eureka Springs, Ark., a must visit, according to Rev-Tim. As I always discover, my interests are different from the masses: this city is a typical tourist trap! Famous for music-festivals (Gordon Lightfoot is in town), weddings, shopping, hot springs (for healing in past days)and bikers bashes. None interest me(i did buy a T-shirt) and I m heading South on the famous Pigs Trail Rt.# 23 to Ozark, Ark., and a loop via Interstate #44 to Russelville, Ark., and back on # 7 N. to Harrison, Ark.,. I take a detour on Hwy.# 123 N. and what a surprise, it s the most scenic, curvy, new asphalt coated, perfect bike-riding road you can dreamoff! It s a 10! This is my Ozark pinnacle, it just couldn t get any better! I decide to turn-back via a Fri.Aug. 20 Riding, riding, riding the bike loves the speed! Every 2 ½ hour I gas-up, snack, apply sun-screen, and count the states that I fly-through! Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and finally Ontario. In all I did 11 States, 7000 km, 11 days. WOW! Sat.Aug.21 Last camp-site, a State Park just off I.S.# 70 in Ohio, about 700 kms to go home. It s a weekend, the crowds are out, the prices up, the service down. But I m

Eastern Ontario HOG Chapter # 9007 Page 8 of 8 January Issue No. 01 always amazed at the efficiency and friendliness of American hospitality. And the costs are lower. I zoom past familiar cities: Pittsburgh, Penn., Syracuse, N.Y., Watertown, N.Y., the Border =Home! A perfect trip! And my pictures are beautiful, they tell more than a thousand words can. I ll be happy to share them with you, Hermann Editor's note: Thanks, Hermann, for sharing your experience with us! Apologies if I have the photos in the wrong order. H.O.G.
