2 2 Letter to the Editor Suessical The Musical Club 55 Keswick hosts Family Fun Day 11 Hi Karen: My name is Mark Pratt and I'd like to put something in the Pefferlaw Post that would be a kind of public "thank you" to some of the people who live in the area around Weir's Side Road and Old Shiloh Road. My friends, Ron and Chris, own a place there and I was up to visit them on the last weekend of October with some friends and my dog, Barney. As we were out walking through the woods on Ron and Chris' property on Saturday afternoon, Barney caught a scent of something and tore off into the woods, barking, and getting farther and farther away until I couldn't hear him any more. Barney's not a very big dog and he's a city dog, so I was very worried when he hadn't come back by the time it got dark and I was really upset when he still hadn't shown up by Sunday morning. A friend back in Toronto made up a "LOST DOG" flyer which we made 100 copies of and posted in several places in Pefferlaw, Udora and Egypt, as well as putting them in people's mailboxes. My friends and I spent all day on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, searching and calling for him. Although I received one phone call about him on Monday afternoon, by Tuesday I had all but given up hope of finding Barney, or at least of finding him alive. Not knowing what else to do, I returned to Toronto on Tuesday night, feeling very upset and just terrible about coming back without him. Then on Wednesday morning, I received five phone calls from people who live along Old Shiloh Road who had seen him! I was at work, in a series of full day meetings when I received the calls, but I left work and drove back up. When I arrived on Old Shiloh, there were at least 3 people actively out looking for my little buddy! And because of their help, I found him!! He was sitting in a little glade of cedar trees on the south side of Old Shiloh. Just sitting there. He was tired and hungry, had a few burrs in him and his paws were kind of scuffed up and sore, but he was generally OK. Of course I was extremely happy to have Barney back, but I was also kind of overwhelmed by the concern and kindness of Margaret and Paul on Snodden Road, who were the first to call on Monday afternoon, and Tim, Bill and Heidi, who all called and were out driving around looking for Barney when I arrived on Wednesday afternoon. These are people who don't know me at all, have never met or seen Barney and really don't know my friends. And yet, they were interested in helping Barney and me. 3 10 Pefferlaw Lions induct six new members Congratulations to the six Pefferlaw residents who were inducted into the Pefferlaw Lions Club on Monday, November 15. The club s membership numbers have been dwindling over the past number of years and the induction of six new members was a real cause for celebration. A fabulous roast beef dinner with all the trimmings was prepared and served by members of the Pefferlaw Lioness. The white spruce trees, which are native and have a high wildlife habitat value, are approximately one metre in height and can be used as a table-top tree or porch decoration. They are meant to be stored outside for the winter months, brought in for a week over the holidays and then planted in the spring, said Susan Jagminas, a spokesperson for the LSRCA. This is a pilot project with proceeds supporting the schoolyard greening activities of Keswick High School s Environmental Student Council. The trees are available from December 6 until December 23 (or while supplies last) from the LSRCA office at 120 Bayview Parkway in Newmarket. They can be reserved in advance by contacting Andee Pelan by at : a.pelan@lsrca.on.ca or by telephone at (905) ext

Red Barn ruins to undergo restoration This free standing suport wall of the Red Barn illustrates some of what remains of the foundation. Although no longer able to support a structure, this wall and others like it could be used as architectural elements in future Red Barn designs, says the Sibbald family. The site has been cordoned off by a construction fence and from a distance it seems the only element to survive the devastating fire at the Red Barn in 2009 is a roofless silo. But upon closer inspection, the remains of the circa 1883 foundation provide a glimmer of hope to those who refuse to let go of one of Canada s most endearing theatrical icons. After consulting with a theatre consultant, a heritage stone mason, a barn historian and engineers, the Sibbald family has set about preserving the remaining stone walls of the foundation so they can be used as architectural elements in what could be a new venue for theatre productions in Jackson s Point. John Sibbald, the patriarch of the Sibbald family, is passionate about preserving the legacy of the Red Barn and is convinced the ruins are the building blocks to its future. I want to see the property continue to be dedicated to theatre, he says. Besides my marriage and family and keeping the Briars together, it is probably the most important thing in my life. He envisions a 300-seat Red Barn replica some day but says a temporary outdoor venue that incorporates the restored ruins is the first step in going back to the future. His son, Andrew Sibbald, says work is already underway to help protect the foundation ruins from further degradation over the winter and they are currently looking for an architect to design a temporary outdoor cultural space that could accommodate music, theatre, gallery productions and community celebrations. The stone walls are no longer strong enough to support a structure, but we have retained as much as we can of the 1883 foundation. We are in the process of interviewing architects to develop a plan for the whole property, of which the Red Barn Theatre ruins are a part, he said. In an effort to move the financial peanut forward, they have created a not-for-profit organization to assist with the future development of the site. The price tag just to prepare the walls, remove some debris and make the site was safe was $40,000. Mr. Sibbald says the not-for-profit status of the Red Barn Theatre Cultural Site will give the public an opportunity to participate. It s official...craig wins Ward 2 by 14 votes After a recount of 2,700 Ward 2 ballots on Monday, November 15 at the Civic Centre, Phil Craig was officially pronounced the winner of the October 25 election by a margin of 14 votes. Mr. Craig received 951 votes and his closest rival, Dan Fellini received 937. The original count on election night resulted in 954 votes for Mr. Craig and 932 votes for Mr. Fellini. Mr. Fellini approached council shortly after the election asking for a recount due to the slim margin of 22 votes between the two candidates and the possibility of irregularities at the polling station on the night of the election. 5
