PRESIDENT S LETTER Hello BMW club members, October surprised us with very good weather this year until about the 20th when we saw temperatures drop into the low 40 s, but still sunny, and still a lot of color around everywhere. There were 6 club rides planned for October, excluding the Slimey Crud ride. The ride to the lighthouse at Wind Point, Mazatlan restaurant and the Fall Colors ride to New Glarus all had perfect weather. During Karen s cholesterol ride it was already much colder. It looks like the colder temperatures are here to stay now. While I write this the Halloween ride is still in our future. I hope everyone can find their Gerbing heated jackets that have not seen action since last winter. Election season has started and during the October club meeting some members were nominated for board positions (some even accepted!). We need more volunteers, so please accept a position if you get nominated during our November club meeting. The elections will follow in December. Every year Wisconsin is the state with the highest mileage in the MOA mileage competition. Other states are now following close behind and are trying to take the #1 spot from us. Please bring your completed MOA mileage contest forms (you can find it in the MOA magazine) to the November meeting. We can then sign them and send all forms together to the MOA before the required deadline of November 13. See you all at the meeting. Prez Secretary s Report * Highlights from the October 4, 2013 Club Meeting Meeting called to order at 8pm. March minutes read by Tom S. Guests were Ellen Raguski (R1150R), Robert Crawford (K1600GTL), Bob Husky (R1100RS), Tom Poston (R1150R), and Jim Galaszewski (R65LS). Correspondence: Mike Cohen received bills from Bob Reitberger and Tom Stresing. President s Report: Had a great 4 hours at the rally. VP report: Installation party will be the first Saturday in January. Maybe. There was some discussion regarding the convenience of that date. Stay tuned. Secretary: Tom explained why he had to leave the rally early. Treasurer: Nothing. MOA rep: Sarah Berg spoke on behalf of Sue Rihn and said the International Council met in Slovenia. The MOA s logo is under re-review by BMW. Steve Lemke got his SEVEN HUNDRED THOUSAND mile award. RA rep: Karen told us that our club logo was OK d by BMW. Whew! I was losing a lot of sleep over that. The RA rally will be the weekend of May 29, at Barber Motorsports. Keith Code will be there! AMA rep Andy Pretzl wants to be replaced. Rally Chair Becky said we had 508 people at the rally (including two who left early). Tour Directors: Doug Twing talked about his ride to Lake Geneva and his ride to his house. Karen showed us the receipts for bail from the Women of Mayhem ride to Nashville. Ed has six rides planned for October. Sunshine Committee: Update your status. Constitution Committee: Nothing. Old Business: Mike Cohen thanked the hosts and ride leaders for the Round Robin. Ernie pointed out that Mike is back riding now one year and one week after his crash. He took time off from riding, but never from his work for the club. He got a round of applause for that, but I think it was mostly for being Mike. New Business: Christine Ledezma raised concern about the cost of mailing newsletters. Karen said she d canvas the members to see if it s absolutely necessary. Nominations for office for 2014: President--Ed Boskamp and Doug Twing Vice President--Jim Guthrie Secretary--Karen Jacobs, Bob Lannin, Jerry Breitenbach Treasurer--Mike Cohen Trustee--Bob Reitberger and Jim Fuhrmann Board Member at Large--Bob Lannin and Tom Stresing Editor--Christine Ledezma Webmaster--Tony DeLorenzo Constitution Committee--Karen Jacobs, Rich Hehn and Ritche Miller Rally Chair--Becky Policht Submitted by Tom Stresing 3

INTERESTING STUFF Meet our new member... WINDSOR MARSH I am 46 and married to my wife of 12 years. We have no kids, but we have an awesome little American Eskimo named Cesar. We have lived in Elm Grove for 10 years and enjoy motorcycling, golf, softball and all the great festivals and attractions that Milwaukee has to offer. I am from Ohio originally, graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and also have an MBA from Regis University in Colorado. I am a consultant working out of General Electric in Waukesha and my wife works from home advising a few clients on financial planning. I have been riding for as long as I was able to mount a mini bike, which was a Rupp. Then I had a Benelli which was three speed, so I learned how to shift the gears at that time. After that I had a Yamaha YZ80, then a Honda XR75 which I used to learn to climb hills in southern Ohio. Then my first street bike was a Yamaha Riva scooter which got me through school. I bought a 1982 Kawasaki Specter which I had until I moved to Elm Grove. Then I bought a new 2003 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic which I had for one season. After a few years I bought a 1995 Triumph Sprint Sport touring which I had for three years until a guy pulled out in front of me and I went down. I was okay and fixed the bike back pretty well but I got to thinking about ABS and went looking for a newer bike. I found a K1200GT and I love it. I think I will go to the K1600GT next, but not for a while. I ve only put 13K on this one so far (just over a year). I usually ride it unless there is snow. I love riding and am looking forward to getting more involved and meeting more people that love BMW's too. 4

CLUB RIDE REPORTS (lots of em) October 9th RIDE TO MAZATLAN (cont d) party. With our departure time at 5.30 pm and sunset at 6.19 pm, there was not a lot of daylight left, so we did some southern KM, and I got us over to Mazatlan Mexican restaurant in Delafield at 6.25 pm, just before dark. Pete and Chris joined us there at 6.45 pm. The food was excellent. When Jim Dennis Pipkorn told me at the monthly meeting that Casa del Rio had been sold, the destination quickly changed to Mazatlan. It was a good choice. Everyone had a good time. Saturday, September 28th RIDE TO LUNCH - led by Doug Twing On Saturday morning, September 28th, I led a ride leaving Hardee s at 10am and ending with tacos served at the Twing residence. I knew free food would bring out a few more riders and they were Glenn Dinicola (guest), plus two other guests (sorry, lost sign-in sheet), John Gliszczinski, Marcel Riebe, Ron Feurer, Jim Fuhrmann, Ed Boskamp, Steve Lemke, Jeff Bacon and Miro Sapozhnikov. We worked our way around the southern kettles and the lowland area north of East Troy finishing with a lap around Whitewater Lake and then to my house. Along the route we were lucky enough to watch the same Harley parade twice. The weather was better than anyone could expect for late September and a great time was had by all. Wednesday, October 6th RIDE TO WIND POINT - led by Ed Boskamp On Sunday morning October 6th at 9.30 am I was joined at the Hardee s by Glenn Christensen, Ron Feurer, Ernie Grill, Bill Saxler, Marcel Riebe and Ellen Rugowski. At 10 am we departed via 83 and E towards Eagle where we found both Nature Road and Bluff Road closed, maybe due to the flash flooding from the day before. We drove around all the closures and via some nice country roads through East Troy, and past Tichigan Lake we finally arrived in Racine county, where we tried to avoid urban areas as much as possible. At noon we arrived at the Wind Point lighthouse, which was open for visitors. Nobody in our group climbed all the stairs, maybe because of the hefty $10 price tag. After about 20 minutes we left for lunch in Racine. Ernie, Ellen and Bill didn t join for lunch, so it was up to me, Ron, Glenn and Marcel to eat a record number of peanuts at the Texas Roadhouse. Everybody had a good time. Wednesday, October 9th RIDE TO MAZATLAN - led by Ed Boskamp On Wednesday October 9, 2013 at 5 pm I met Dan Mueller and Pete Fryer at the Hardee s. Pete was just there to tell me that he and Chris Blanchard were going to join us for dinner but did not have time to join the ride. Pete was on an MV Augusta that looked very pretty. Just before we took off, Glenn Christensen joined the Saturday, October 13th FALL COLORS RIDE - led by Ed Boskamp On Sunday October 13, 2013 it was 37 degrees when I woke up at 6 am, but when I got to the Hardee s at 9.30 am, I already had to take my sweater off because it was a balmy 47 degrees. At the Hardees I was soon joined by Miro. He stopped by to join us for breakfast and conversation, but he had other obligations, so he could not join the ride. Soon after Miro, the following participants arrived: Glenn DiNicola, Gregory Hagopian, Jim Guthrie, Christine Ledezma, Jerry Breitenbach, Joy Kuenzi, Glenn Christensen, Robert Crawford and Marcel Riebe. I led the ride with my daughter Lisa on the back seat (eager to see the New Glarus brewery for the first time). We departed at am towards the southern KM and Whitewater Lake, then westward on Town Line Road. We took a Bio break in Evansville at a Gas station, and then moved further westward past the Albany Wildlife area towards Monticello and finally New Glarus, where we arrived at 1.30 pm. Joy had indicated that she wanted to have lunch before we moved to the brewery, so we parked the bikes downtown and looked for chow. Many of us decided to eat at the local pub. I decided against that because last time I did that I waited forever for my food. Glenn C., Lisa and myself opted for the Culvers while the rest ate at the pub. Glenn went home after lunch, so Lisa and I moved on to the brewery, where we were later joined by other riders from our group. The Fall colors were breath taking, the weather was beautiful, the beer was tasteful, and everybody had a good time. 5

(more) CLUB RIDE REPORTS/EVENTS Saturday, October 19th SECOND ANNUAL CHOLESTEROL RIDE - led by Karen Jacobs It was a brisk but sunny start for the cheese ride to the Monroe area. We met at Hardee s and rode west to Waterville Road, then southwest through the Whitewater Lake area and on through Janesville; arriving at our first stop at the Decatur Cheese factory outside Broadhead. Then it was onward to New Glarus for cheese, chocolate and great bakery items. Then to Monroe for the largest of all the cheese stops for a basketful of cheese varieties and ending up at Baumgartner s in Monroe for lunch. No one had the courage to have a limburger cheese and braunschweiger with raw onion sandwich. We were grateful for that. We avoided all the threats of rain and rode in cool 40 & 50 degree temperatures, my ideal riding weather conditions. Joining us on the ride were John Archer, Dick Burton, George Davies, Keith Emich, Ron Feurer, Pete Freyer, Jim Guthrie, Harv Read, Marcel Riebe, Miro Sapozhnikov, Doug Twing, guests Robert Crawford & Kevin Pepin, and yours truly. Thank you all for riding along! Sunday, October 27th LA ESTACION RIDE - led by Ed Boskamp On Sunday October 27th I was greeted at the Hardee s by Harvey Reed, Mike McArthey, Robert Crawford and Marcel & Jordy Riebe (on a Goldwing). At 11am we took off to the southwest. About 10 minutes into the ride my GPS started spontaneously changing the display every 5 seconds. It was the touch screen digitizer again. No blame to BMW this time, as I bought my Zumo 550 directly from Garmin at the Lima MOA meeting. Luckily, last time I fixed my GPS I ordered an extra screen from the supplier in Hong Kong. I did remember most of my route, so that was not an issue at all. The Fall colors were still abundant, the temperature was in the 40 s and it was sunny, resulting in an excellent ride. At 1pm we arrived at La Estacion. Robert had left us to go home, but my son Thijs was waiting there to join us for their excellent brunch. Everyone had a good time. 7 TRAVELOGUE Go West, Young Man, and Grow Up with the Country by Tom Stresing ( ) Part 3. This tale is a lot like the Energizer bunny Thursday, July 18. Up and going early on a cold and foggy morning. I turned inland at Reedsport, heading for Crater Lake. Just east of Reedsport there s a parking lot attached to a huge meadow. The sign there said Elk Viewing Area, so I pulled in to give them a chance to check me out. None were around, though, so back on the road through the mountains. It warmed up just before I got to the park, so I could get rid of the sweatshirt and put on summer gloves. Crater Lake is awesome! I came in from the north entrance, no big deal, pretty flat, almost desert terrain, but there s a big parking lot over there, I wonder what the attraction could be, WOW! The road around the crater requires concentration. In many places, there s no shoulder, no barrier, and if you stray off the pavement, your next stop will be several hundred feet below. What a great place for an acrophobe! As luck would have it, though, I stayed on the road all the way around, stopping, of course, at many of the overlooks to overlook and take pictures. I left via the north entrance and turned east. The road from the coast to the park is nothing but twists and curves and elevation changes, and the road from the park east to Hwy 97 is as straight and flat as a, ummm, really straight and flat thing. Worse than boring. North on 97 to a little town for lunch. The restaurant had a Ham and Chesse sandwich on the menu, but I wasn t brave enough to try it (pawns can be woody), settling for a burger and a shake. North on Hwy 58 to I5 and Salem. I found a good place for my tent several inches from the neighboring tents and within running distance of the restroom, so, cool, time to get some food and explore. Canned Heat rocked that night. Friday Saturday. I turned in my door prize tickets and made the mistake of walking through the vendor area. The bike has new shocks and brake lights, I have new boots and gloves, Mickie and I will eventually have six bottles of wine, and my credit card has a major dent in it. I saw Sue and Hallie, Jack, the Magin clan, Karol, Carol, and Brian. They told me that Harvey was there, too, but I spent most of my time in the vendor area, and Harvey s too smart for that so I never did see him. As usual, I failed to win any door prizes or the 50-50, and, probably due to some kind of computer glitch, they didn t announce me as a bike winner in the sweepstakes. I m sure that will be remedied soon. I wasn t overly impressed with Johnny Lang on Friday, but the Saturday guys were really good. I d call it a pretty good rally, all things considered. Sunday, July 21. More great weather, and I m gone early, north back into Washington, then east along the Columbia. I stopped for breakfast and called my son to sing Happy Birthday to him. It s so difficult to believe that I m so young and still have a 34 year-old kid. It won t be many more years and he ll be older than I. It was overcast along the river, but still beautiful, and the road was uncrowded and interesting. The sun was starting to peek out as I pulled into a little town to tank up. And then the story got sad. As I rode in, there were two vehicles tanking up in front of me. I had a great need to see if the plumbing in the rest room worked, so parked the bike about ten feet behind the last car, waived at the driver, and hurried off to start my investigation. When I returned, the bike was on its side, and the offending car/truck/van (witnesses weren t sure) was nowhere to be seen. People helped me right the bike; the sidestand was bent forward at a grotesque angle, but no other damage was evident. A passing officer stopped to discuss the situation, and, fortunately, he knew a guy who knew a guy, and that guy was actually in his shop, so we went there and he fixed it good enough to get you home. That would have been true if home had been really close by. I stopped for gas and a drink just after I recrossed the Columbia, put the bike on the stand, started walking to the building, and heard a crunchy sound behind me. I thought to myself, That sounds exactly like the noise a GS would make if it was falling over, and when I turned around, I discovered that I was correct. Several people ran over and helped me get it up, and one of the employees came out to help me tank up. I rode to Walla Walla (hope I got those Wallas in the right order), found a motel, got some help dismounting and centerstanding, and hauled out the Anonymous Book. And then the story got happy again. (to be continued...) 7

The VP keeps a running total from year to year of your odometer reading. If you have more than one motorcycle that you rode during the year, please list them all. There are Five (5) mileage awards presented each year to individuals that accumulate the highest ridden miles on BMW s from the November meeting to the following November meeting. One average mileage award will also be given. If you are a new member, turn in your beginning mileage this November so that you may be a contender for next year. We had great participation last year and this year is expected to see some new faces receive the awards. Keep in mind; this is NOT the BMW MOA mileage contest. This is for the Wisconsin BMW Club members only and is a 12 month total.
