September 2010 Newsletter (9/13/10) Hello Goldhounds, We are sorry that the newsletter is coming out late this month. It has been one of our busiest times ever and our Webmaster, Bill Percy, will be back from vacation on 9/14. The good news is the next outing will not be until 10/7 10/12 here at our mine. Don will send out s to give you directions and a schedule of events as we get closer to the dates. Many of you already know that Carol Ebbitt suffered a stroke at the Championships on 9/5/10. She is still in serious health but stable at this time and will remain in ICU. As Don hears from the family he will keep you informed of her condition. You may send cards to her home at 3480 Rockwell Lane, Lincoln, Ca Her Son, David, will take them to her at the hospital. She still needs your thoughts and prayers. Stan Makiney s Celebration of Life in Garden Valley on 9/11 was well attended and we could see that a lot of Goldhounds was there to honor Stan for the wonderful life he had lived. We all agreed that Stan was a kind, quiet man and a friend to everyone. Stan will be missed but never forgotten. Our Heritage Event and Championships did very well. We did not have the number of vendors there that we had last year but we had more panners competing than ever before. Our event was busy but our volunteers keep everything humming right along and our focus was to get the awards and raffle done on time and we did! Our Children s panning booth was busy all day, everyday. And our Championships did not ever slow down. Some of our panners travel a long way to compete for this title so we only see them once a year. We cannot begin to thank everyone for your help and dedication to this State and National Championship. SIXTEEN TO ONE UNDERGROUND GOLD MINERS TOUR, ALLEGHANY 10/23/10 The cost will be determined by how many will be going. Let me know if you are interested by 10/10/10. Your check will be made out to the Alleghany Mining Museum when we arrive at the museum. If you do not like tunnels this is not for you. I would give the tour a level 5 6. You could come along and go for the Surface Tour. The history of this mine alone is worth seeing. We will meet at the Alleghany Gold Miner s Museum in the morning, between 10:00am and 11:00am. The tour typically runs four hours start to finish. You need to be able to hike a mile into the mine, with some steep terrain to navigate. The following will be needed: A release of liability form to sign will be ready when you get there. Wear long pants, light jacket or sweatshirt (layers) and rubber boots. It is wet, muddy and cool in the mine. Bring a headlamp and flashlight. This is very important! They will have hard hats and we have extra, if you need to borrow one let us know. Bring a knapsack lunch and your drinks. There is only one restaurant in town, not sure if it is open. Alleghany is a small town and parking can be a problem. If you would like to car pool we will meet in Auburn, Hwy 49 & Bell Rd., in the K-Mart parking area. It is at least 2 hours from Auburn if traffic is smooth. We will meet at 8:00am. We follow Hwy.49 all the way to Ridge Rd., turn right and follow this to the town of Alleghany all the way to the end. You can meet up with us at the Underground Gold Mining Museum at the end of the lower road on the right. Wear you badges if you have them. See you then. Annie _

Slate Creek Outing Near LaPorte August This was our yearly outing and as usual we had a super time. The weather was very cool, in fact, downright cold in the early mornings. There were 24 of us there, and the gold was pretty good. I found a couple of small pickers in a crevice on the first day so that was a super way to start. Sharon Dimuzio then got a heavier picker so we were off and running. Two flat tires reminded us of the sharp rocks in the area, one right after the crossing. The camping area is perfect, Right on Slate Creek. There is a long, relatively steep, hairpin road going down so the trip to the campground is slow. Then we cross Slate creek, which was only maybe 12 inches deep at most. Going up the other side was a little steep but doable. Four wheel drives were required. We ll be back next year and some of you will likely be there several times before that! Great outing. Thanks crew. This is looking up Slate Creek from the river crossing. I took this picture just as my Geo was getting ready to cross.there is always one boulder sticking up some in the creek, so you have to make sure you miss it - or there goes the oil pan, or something!

Slate Creek Outing Here s the crossing. You can see the truck coming through the water and just about ready to come up the bank. Ron and Forrest Gribble came on up the bank as part of the caravan and I was in front. Well, I got to the Campground about 300 years away and no Ron!! Back I went and this was the scene below! He caught something sharp right off and down the tire went. What a way to start! They got it fixed in a flash though, and Ron was mighty careful the rest of the outing. especially when he drove back out. No spare tire... Some of the crew had come in several days earlier and had already set up camp. Oh yeah, JP had a flat tire later. He didn t want Ron to out do him! As you can see below, everyone pitches in to help. The Goldhounds are untouchable! :-)

Slate Creek Outing Having fun yet? Panning time! J.P. running his Vac Pack type unit.

California State and National Championships Goldhounds, this was a fantastic event in which all of you should be proud. We combined a State and National Championships together and ran the events within minutes of the scheduled time - for two days! If ever there was such a thing as a team effort, this was it. This newsletter now will be quick so that you can have the results. The October newsletter will really cover the pictures and all that went on. So here s the basics and stay tuned for the October newsletter that will give you all the details! Thanks. Don. Get ready, set, go! Let s get those tents up! OK, whose turn is it to muck these out now?
