The Voice of the Golden Triangle Amateur Radio Club Web Address: AUGUST, 2016 VOLUME XXVI ISSUE 8 Prez Sez By: Jim Sanders/AG6IF Pres Sez, Jim Sanders, AG6IF Greetings from Jim in Temecula. 8/8/16 (reminds me of 8/8/88 when the Chicago Cubs first turned on their lights for night games) I first want to send out a big thank you to each and every person who helps to make our club successful. It really takes a lot of effort from a wide variety of members to make everything come together that way it does. To all the members who are always willing to lend a hand, as well as current and former board members, and you know who you are, I salute you. I want to express my thanks and announce that a few days ago, the AREDN (Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network) 2.4/5.8GHZ mesh node was turned on in the Temecula area. The node is able to see a wide swatch of area from the 15 all the way out to wine country. Jim Martin/NH6WR (Temecula) with a tiny bit of technical assistance from myself and a bit of funding from your GTARC Board and others, has been working on this site on the north facing side of the Palomar mountain range. Constructed on rugged cement footings, and powered by off-grid technology with Battery/Solar. We expect this will allow the system to operate during times of emergency, day and night. This should really allow the area to link in and extend the capability for mesh, as well as assisting in getting connected both north to Wildomar/Elsinore, and south to San Diego eventually. Also, a thank you for everyone who attended the 3 rd 2016 Mini Tech day. We had a great time going over how operate to IRLP system. The system is on PL100 (simplex node) and is accessible from much of Temecula as well as 5 to 10 miles north and south. The final mini tech day for 2016 is October 29 th, Saturday, 11AM-3PM. Peggy in usual fashion will whip up something fun for lunch, and we are going to get the analyzer out and take a look at some of
GTARC TRIANGULATOR Issue 8, your 2m antenna's as well as my slot converted Dish antenna. If you have something that you are working on, bring it and we can take a look at it. Remember our GTARC Picnic is coming up Sat. 13 th, and our general meeting is 4th Monday each month, and existing nets are held Wed. 8pm USB and Thursday at 7:30pm Please join in! Thank you one and all. 73 Jim Sanders/AG6IF Teams: Communication and Outreach: Phil Yantis, chairman Website, Triangulator, P.R., Club Communications. GTARC-TV Ustream etc. Repeaters and Club Radio Communications: Harry Pollak, chairman 2M Repeater, 440 Repeater, Remote HF, Echolink, HT Loaner Program, GTARC Nets etc. Public Service: Mark Harnetiaux/N6WBC RACES, CERT, SATERN ETC. Education: Gordon Neuls, chairman Licensing Classes etc. Events: Gloria Dechert, chairman General Meeting Programs, Thursday Lunches, Quarterly Events (Field Day, GTARC Picnic. Mini-Field Days etc.) General Meeting May 23, 2016 The club picnic will be Saturday, August 13, per the attached flyer. Also attached is a list of this year's prizes. As you can see, the list has grown significantly from previous years, and the prizes now have a value of $2,200! Remember, you do not need to be present THE NEW BOARD 2016OARD to win, but you do need to acquire tickets to win Monday's meeting, and the Thursday lunches, will be the last chances before the picnic, so if you can't be at Pala Park for all the free good food and fun, it would be prudent to see me at one of those venues to purchase some. Everyone who signs in at the picnic does receive one free ticket, and the freebie has won the grand prize in the past. Videos of the shopping trip to HRO can be seen on Facebook at the GTARC page.
GTARC TRIANGULATOR Issue 8, Jim Sanders/AG6IF held another mini field day at his house on Saturday, July 30, from 11 AM to 3 PM. The subjects were IRLP, Echolink and getting your HT set up to connect These sessions are always very informative. The meeting was streamed on GTARCTV Channel on Ustream ( Please remember that it is always better to attend the meetings (there is a drawing that can only be won by someone in attendance!) to ask questions, etc., but the streaming is provided solely as a courtesy for those members who cannot be there in person. Because of the nature of streaming and the equipment involved, there is no guarantee that the process will be a success, or that the entire meeting will be available for viewing. Besides, the other members would like to have the pleasure of your presence! There was an "Elmering" session from 7:00 to 7:30. Several knowledgeable members were available to answer questions and provide guidance on various radio subjects -- different types of radios, good radio practice, programming, different radio modes, etc. This is always an excellent opportunity to learn and find out some of the finer points of amateur radio -- usually learned through painful (and expensive) experience. The meeting was at the Temecula Valley Educators Association office, Rancho California, Suite 206. The location is just "uphill" from Pat & Oscar's and the Duck Pond, about one-half mile east of I-15. Turn onto Via Los Colinas from Rancho at the signal opposite the Target shopping center. Enter the parking area at the first driveway on the right; park in either the upper or lower lot. See for more directions, maps, etc. The Elmer and social session begins at 7 PM, with the meeting starting at 7:30. If anyone has pictures, please post on Google Docs or forward to me and I will post them I made a folder for 2016 Field Day There are a lot of pictures posted already in the folder. Any problems please me at slduke@earthlink.net or call and I will walk you through the process. Coming GTARC Attractions July 30th, 2016, Project Day, IRLP, Echolink, operation, getting your HT set up to connect. R.S.V.P Jim Sanders for instructions if you plan to attend. August 13, 2016, GTARC Family Picnic, see calendar for details and flyer. October, 29th, 2016, Project Day, Antenna Tuning. Building a 2m 440 antenna? Bring it, let s work to get it tweaked in perfectly. Want to compare A vs B? We can do that too. R.S.V.P Jim Sanders for instructions if you plan to attend.

GTARC TRIANGULATOR Issue 8, This is a link to GTARC History: OVg3WGRGZjRlYlZ3LWgzRUE&usp=sharing I am not a turkey, I'm a ham! A HAM NAMED ELMER LIVED WITH HIS XYL NAMED SUE. WHILE AT THE QTH ONE NIGHT, SUE SUDDENLY WENT QRT. (DIED). ELMER PICKED UP THE PHONE, AND CALLED 911 AND REPORTED THAT HIS WIFE HAD JUST DIED AND COULD SOMEONE COME OVER TO PICK HER UP. THE OPERATOR ASKED FOR HIS ADDRESS AND ELMER SAID HE LIVED ON THE END OF EUCALYPTUS LANE... THE 911 OPERATOR ASKED HIM TO SPELL THAT. THERE WAS A LONG PAUSE ON THE END OF THE LINE AND THEN ELMER SAID... "HOW ABOUT I JUST DRAG HER OVER TO OAK STREET AND YOU MEET ME THERE"!! Two elderly hams had been friends for many decades. Over the years they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures on the ham bands. Lately, their activities have been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards. One day they were playing cards when one looked at the other and said, "Now don't get mad at me...i know we've been friends for a long time...but I just can't think of your name and your call.! I've thought and thought, but I can't remember them. Please tell me what they are." His friend glared at him. For at least three minutes he just stared and glared at the gray haired old man.. Finally he said, "How soon do you need to know? An old, old ham was lying in his death bed upstairs. His most favorite food in the world was chocolate chip cookies. As he lay there, gasping for each breath, he was sure he could smell freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies. He crawled out of bed and slowly limped down the stairs. Sure enough, across the kitchen, there was a huge platter of chocolate chip cookies on the table. He finally made it to the table and he reached a shaking hand towards the cookies. Suddenly, his XYL slapped his hand sharply and yelled, "DON'T TOUCH THOSE-they're for the funeral!" A ham is driving up a steep, narrow mountain road, his antennas flopping in the breeze and flopping into the other lane. A YL is driving down the same road. As they pass each other, the YL narrowly missed the antennas and leans out of the window and yells...pig! The ham immediately leans out of his window and replies, "WITCH!!" They each continue on their way, and as the man rounds the next corner, he crashes into a pig in the middle of the road. If hams would only listen

One of the other very important things Judy handles very well is making reservations at local eateries for our Thursday lunches. If you have a favorite restaurant and recommend it to Judy as a place for the Lunch Bunch, she will scope it out and out it on the list of places we go. She tries very hard to find small restaurants that serve the freshest of food and variety that she knows all would enjoy. A big plus for us is the relatively quietness of these smaller places s o we can converse with and enjoy each other's company. Separate checks for us are also a must. Judy needs your help. If you are planning to join us at these lunches and, of course, all are welcome, please let Judy know early enough as to how many are coming so she can pass this along to the restaurant. This makes for a more pleasant experience. If you are not on her weekly Notification List and would like to be included, just call or e mail her. Of course schedules sometimes need to be rearranged, so let Judy know as soon as possible. The items include hats & shirts in a variety of styles and colors, mugs & glasses in a variety of styles, household items, gift items (even a teddy bear for the grandkids), and much, much more. An elderly ham and his XYL were on a cruise and it was really stormy. They were standing on the back of the boat watching the moon, when a wave came up and washed the old woman overboard. They searched for days and couldn't find her, so the captain sent the old ham back to shore with the promise that he would notify him as soon as they found something. Three weeks went by and finally the old man got a fax from the boat. It read: "Sir, sorry to inform you, we found your wife dead at the bottom of the ocean. We hauled her up to the deck and attached to her posterior was an oyster and in it was a pearl worth $50,000..please advise" The old man faxed back: "Send me the pearl and re-bait the trap!"
