2 UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE ARCHIVES RECORDS RECEIVED INTO CUSTODY NAME: ADDRESS: MAIN ACTIVITY: IAN CLUNIES ROSS MEMORIAL FOUNDATION 191 Royal Parade, Parkville Non-profit oranization collects funds and dispenses grants for scientific research Australia-wide INCLUSIVE DATES: DATE TRANSFERRED: November - December 1978 GENERAL NOTE: The Foundation is an Australia-wide non-profit organization controlled by a board of governors and administered by an executive committee. The governors are eminent representatives of many different aspects of science, technology, primary and secondary industry. The Foundation was established in 1959 following the death of Ian Clunies Ross, Chairman of C.S.I.R.O. from 1949 to It was formed at the instigation of friends and associates of Clunies Ross to commemorate his achievements and the principles he represented. During his career Clunies Ross advocated looking toward the application of scientific knowledge to the major problems of agricultural and industrial development. The Foundation established as its aims the general promotion and development of scientific research and the improvement of communication between branches of science and between science and the rest of the community. A fund was established relying chiefly on donation from companies and individuals rather than government. Contributors include major Australian, British and American companies. Money was channelled into the building of a National science centre named Clunies Ross House in Royal Parade, Parkville, occupied in The objective was to bring together under one roof all the major scientific and technological institutes and societies of the Commonwealth and provide them with low cost office accommodation, lecturing and conference facilities. Other major activities of the Foundation include grants to people and groups engaged in scientific and technological research, issuing a commemorative medal for outstanding work in science and technology and organizing memorial lectures, conferences and conventions. The collection documents the growth of the Foundation from its infant days to its contemporary position as one of Australia's largest non-government supporters of scientific and technological research. J.E. Cummins, formerly Scientific Liaison Officer, C.S.I.R.O., London, held the position of first Administrative Secretary of the Foundation; a member of the Board of Governors and the Executive Committee. Group 20 is a collection of his personal papers dating from Lee Kelly Assistant Archivist February 1981
