14 A climate like Taiwan in Queensland Subtropical region in the south (Brisbane), summers are warm, winters mild and autumn & spring offer the very best of climates Tropical region in the north (Cairns), where the wet season (throughout summer) can be humid and hot; the dry season (throughout winter) is dry and mild. Summer is from October to April Average temperatures from 20 C to 30 C Water temperature 28 C Winter is from May to September Average temperatures from 10 C to 20 C Water temperature 18 C But IN VICTORIA IN THE SOUTH we do have snow on our mountains (<2000m)

23 The people of Australia a unique culture 23 million people One of the world s most ethnically diverse societies 1 in 4 (25%) Australian residents were born outside of Australia (12% of Asian heritage) Many more are 1 st or 2 nd generation Australians, the children and grandchildren of recent migrants and refugees Indigenous Australians have a 50,000 year history Is there a typical Aussie?

24 The typical Aussie is a contradiction Suspicious of authority Informal, open and direct, say what they mean People overseas believe Australians live mainly in country areas, the Australian outback or the bush Australia is a lucky country with people who enjoy their leisure, particularly sport, spectators and participants Mostly law-abiding More conformist than rebellious (1854 Eureka) More than 75% live a cosmopolitan lifestyle in urban centers, mainly in the capital cities along the coast Australians are hard-working people with some of the longest working hours in the developed world There is no such thing as a typical Aussie they are all these things and more!

25 The Man from Snowy River There was movement at the station, for the word had passed around That the colt from old Regret had got away, And had joined the wild bush horses - he was worth a thousand pound, So all the cracks had gathered to the fray. All the tried and noted riders from the stations near and far Had mustered at the homestead overnight, For the bushmen love hard riding where the wild bush horses are, And the stockhorse snuffs the battle with delight.

26 And one was there, a stripling on a small and weedy beast, He was something like a racehorse undersized, With a touch of Timor pony - three parts thoroughbred at least And such as are by mountain horsemen prized. He was hard and tough and wiry - just the sort that won't say die There was courage in his quick impatient tread; And he bore the badge of gameness in his bright and fiery eye, And the proud and lofty carriage of his head.

27 He sent the flint stones flying, but the pony kept his feet, He cleared the fallen timber in his stride, And the man from Snowy River never shifted in his seat It was grand to see that mountain horseman ride. Through the stringy-barks and saplings, on the rough and broken ground, Down the hillside at a racing pace he went; And he never drew the bridle till he landed safe and sound, At the bottom of that terrible descent.

28 And down by Kosciusko, where the pine-clad ridges raise Their torn and rugged battlements on high, Where the air is clear as crystal, and the white stars fairly blaze At midnight in the cold and frosty sky, And where around The Overflow the reed beds sweep and sway To the breezes, and the rolling plains are wide, The man from Snowy River is a household word today, And the stockmen tell the story of his ride. 34 The Australian Aboriginal oldest continuous culture (50,000 years) on planet Earth Rainbow Serpent of the Dreamtime: associated with rivers, creeks, lagoons, billabongs, and the formation of the hills and valleys > the land! The Rainbow Serpent is the protector of the land, its people, and the source of all life, but can be a destructive force if not properly respected. The land is called country and is very important to the people.

43 What would you wear? In the south you will keep warm. Wear parkas and jumpers! You might wear Ugg boots

44 What would you do? Everything The clubs - start at 11 PM go to morning Big Day Out a rock festival for a weekend The pubs (short for public house) You will go to the beach and the surf

45 What would you say? Australians talk funny! If you say hello in Australian! gud hay might Good day mate Aussies also shorten nearly every word by ending it with -ie (pr ee). Present? Pressie. Breakfast? Brekkie. Sunglasses? Sunnies. Mosquito? Mozzie.

46 What you would hear? Many strange sounds. Such as bands The BeeGees, Men at Work, Air Supply, Yothu Yindi But nothing as strange as this!

48 How would you travel? Mostly by car. There is public transport in the cities but not in the OUTBACK. Motorcycles but few scooters But we have scooter turns like TAIWAN HOOK TURN

49 What would you avoid? Animals Australia has the 9 of the 10 most venomous snakes. Driving drunk, or fast or dangerously Swimming too far out (in the sea or rivers and lakes)
