3 tasmania Message from the Chairperson The Tasmanian Heritage Festival in 2017 will once again provide a wonderful showcase and celebration of our unique and important heritage. With this year s festival theme of Having a Voice, participants have seized on the opportunity to re-imagine, re-consider and re-interpret our heritage, and perhaps also to re-assess its impact in/on our community now and for future generations. Building on the successes of previous heritage festivals, the National Trust of Tasmania management and staff have worked tirelessly in collaboration with the community to provide a wonderful festival program that truly promotes the exploration, recognition and preservation of our heritage. This year s program has a full calendar of events, and it is excellent to see that this involves participants and organisations from right across the state. The continued success of the Tasmanian Heritage Festival is of course made possible each year by the committed support of very many people and organisations. So we would like to thank all the volunteers who so passionately dedicate their time, energy and skills to so many community organisations in every part of the state. Thank you too to all the organisations who are participating this year and contributing so importantly to the program through their particular event. This wide combination of local community events, offered across the state, provides a very rich tapestry of opportunities to celebrate our heritage. We hope you take up as many of these opportunities as you are able. A special acknowledgement must also be given to all of our National Trust volunteers and staff for their hard work and commitment in putting this festival together, which has not only made the festival possible, but has also contributed to the success it clearly promises to be. On behalf of the Board of the National Trust Tasmania, I should like to acknowledge most sincerely the key support given to The Tasmanian Heritage Festival by the Tasmanian State Government and the Australian Federal Government - and to thank them not only for their support to this festival but also for their recognition of Tasmania s unique and important heritage. Alexander Laing was born in Scotland, and was transported to Sydney in Then after moving to Hobart Town and eventually marrying, he became a police constable at Sorell. In 1851 he was appointed New Norfolk Gaoler, and resigned from that position to become upper wards man in 1856 at the New Norfolk asylum, a position he held until his dismissal in 1862 for drunkenness. Alexander Laing wrote 242 tunes for the fiddle, including 60 original compositions named after his family and well known identities, with 25 of these tunes written during the period he lived in New Norfolk, and a number of these were written for the asylum s superintendents and family members, as well as local community members and visitors. The Alexander Laing fiddle trail, hosted by FoWC, involves travelling by bus to selected properties around New Norfolk that are identified as relevant to Laing s fiddle tunes and, while at each property, the fiddle tunes that are relevant to that property are played, and the history of Alexander Laing s connection to the site is told, along with a short history of the property. Lunch is at the Lachlan hall in the beautiful Lachlan valley just south of New Norfolk, and the event concludes at historic Glen Derwent homestead, with a Devonshire tea and tour included. The bus will transport participants back to Bathurst Street at conclusion of the event at 3.30pm. Warm clothes, enclosed shoes and an umbrella are advised, as part of this event is held in the open. Enclosed shoes are required for entry to Willow Court Barracks. 4

28 tasmania Our Volunteers It is often repeated that volunteers are the lifeblood of the National Trust, and this tenet could not be more apparent or more relevant than it is today. Yet it is not only the National Trust that draws deeply on a dedicated base of volunteers. Heritage organisations everywhere are built on the support of countless volunteers who generously give their time so that others may explore, experience and enjoy their unique heritage. Perhaps the answer as to why so many individuals choose to spend their spare time in this way lies in the importance that these places, and stories, hold for their communities. The Tasmanian Heritage Festival is a true testament to this passion and service. In almost every heritage organisation featured in the festival program, volunteers have been working behind the scenes, sometimes for decades. Tour guiding, gardening, maintaining cold and draughty heritage homes, cooking, manning shops, fundraising, managing, and curating - the list goes on. We wish to sincerely thank the volunteers across Tasmania, for the vitally important work that they do in the preservation, conservation and celebration of Tasmania s heritage and for the invaluable contribution they have all made to our shared culture. National Trust of Tasmania Board The Old Umbrella Shop Twentieth-century visitors to the Umbrella Shop on George Street in Launceston, would surely have been amazed by the quality of craftsmanship available. Three generations and over a century later, this extraordinary little shop is still in operation, offering a rare glimpse into twentiethcentury shop interiors and the fine work of the Shott family. In 1907, Robert Walter Shott ( ), who had recently moved from Melbourne where he had operated a successful umbrella shop since the late 1880s, opened his business at 60 George Street. Robert Shott had already gained a reputation in Melbourne for his ingenuity and quality of work, having invented a folding umbrella frame, which he sold to the Fox Umbrella Company. Soon after commencing operations in Launceston, he quickly established a reputation in the community for his excellent craftsmanship and started using Tasmanian timbers in his products, even presenting a walking stick to the Prince of Wales during the Royal visit to Tasmania in By the mid 1920 s, Robert Walter s son Robert Martin Shott ( ) began to take on a more active role within the business. Robert Jnr shared Robert Snr s talent and exceptional craftsmanship and expanded the business to include the production and sale of Tasmanian wood souvenirs. 27 John William Robert Shott ( ) was the last Shott to inherit and operate the family business. He began working at the store as a teenager in the 1940s and became an expert French polisher and machinist. Assisted by his sister Dare, who repaired and sewed decorations onto the umbrellas, the two siblings continued to move the business from strength to strength with souvenirs from the shop regularly presented as civic gifts by the Launceston City Council. In 1979 the National Trust acquired the Umbrella Shop following the death of John Stott and has continued to run the retail front of the business, although umbrellas and wood souvenirs are no longer manufactured on the premises. The Old Umbrella Shop is so much more than just a fascinating intact heritage shop interior, it is physical evidence of the remarkable legacy left by the Shott family and a wonderful example of why the National Trust strives to protect and present historic places such as this one. Come in and explore The Old Umbrella Shop, open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 12noon Saturday, and help us continue the tradition.
