8 About Darwin Darwin, the capital of Australia s Northern Territory is a young, thriving cosmopolitan city. The population of Greater Darwin is around 130,000 comprising over 60 nationalities. Located midway between Sydney and Singapore and less than onehour flying time to our nearest Asian neighbour, Darwin has long been heralded as Australia s gateway with Asia. The City offers world-class infrastructure with a deepwater Port, an international airport, rail corridor and road network that connects to southern states, supported with a state-of-theart logistics centre and business park accommodated adjacent to railhead and international Port. Economically, Darwin continues to punch above its weight with steady GDP growth largely attributed to the rapid expansion of the resource industries. One such indicator is the rise within the local construction industry that now represents 20 percent of all registered businesses. This growth underpins a buoyant real estate market, while tourism and Defence support industries also make a sizeable contribution to the local economy. Darwin s employment rate continues to be amongst Australia s highest. This healthy economic snapshot aligns to a vibrant demographic profile, a young median age around 30 years with a comfortable lifestyle that includes an affinity with outdoor leisure Darwin s skyline continues to grow; currently over $450 million has been approved for future construction projects.
9 activities such as fishing, sports, adventure past times and general community participation such as outdoor markets, entertainment events and festivals. The rich multi-cultural mix is also evident through the high quality restaurant offerings and numerous cultural events. The CBD offers a range of professional business services, retail mix, tourist attractions complemented with premium apartments and attractive areas of green space and popular amenities. Darwin s dynamic city centre presents an impressive skyline, which is growing with architecturally crafted multi-storey office and residential apartment high rises that comply with the world s expectations of energy and environment efficiencies and well designed for tropical conditions. Darwin is a young and vibrant city, attracting global attention as a business destination of choice. Darwin offers a high standard of commercial and residential buildings as well as enviable lifestyle choices. MARINE INDUSTRY PARK 9

11 Northern Australia s Service, Logistics And Supply Hub Darwin is a magnet for opportunity. The Territory boasts abundant natural resources, a sizeable Defence presence, and a dynamic mining and energy industry with several major construction and infrastructure projects underway. It s central position on the North Australian coastline and proximity to Asia presents a competitive advantage. This strategic location creates a hub for servicing the region s expanding oil and gas, marine and Defence industries. The rich oil and gas reserves off the coast of Northern Australia continue to attract the attention of the world s exploration and production companies, and as the offshore industry grows, so does the demand for service and supply industries. Darwin has one LNG plant and another under construction, a world-class marine supply base, and an established multi-modal port connected to the AustralAsia Railway and substantial available land for industrial development. Land Development Corporation s Marine Industry Park will capitalise on the existing infrastructure and exceptional opportunities and will position Darwin as the marine maintenance and servicing hub for the region. 12 Northern Territory Snapshot The Northern Territory offers a competitive business environment. Australia s Northern Territory is set to become the centre of opportunity for northern Australia. A number of key drivers will converge over the next decade to ensure that northern Australia plays an ever-increasing role in the unfolding Asian Century. The Northern Territory boasts abundant natural resources, a dynamic mining and energy industry, major construction and infrastructure projects and a competitive business tax environment and unlike other Australian jurisdictions no land tax. It is recognised as an international gas hub and has a government committed to economic prosperity. Economic growth continues to open up a wide range of opportunities for Northern Territory businesses and their partners, taking advantage of the region s proximity to Asia and its diversified economic base. The Northern Territory s economy is expected to expand by around 20% over the next five years, reflecting the construction and first years of operation of the Ichthys LNG project, an increased defence presence and healthy construction, infrastructure and housing sectors. Over the same period, the Northern Territory workforce is expected to experience strong 12 LAND DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION
13 employment growth, creating new opportunities for existing businesses and people entering the workforce. Opportunities across several sectors makes the Northern Territory a serious investment consideration for any local or offshore business seeking to tap into the suite of options created by easy access to, and trade with, Asia. These businesses need capital, skills and infrastructure, while their employees and families require housing and education. Now is an ideal time to take a detailed look at the Northern Territory to understand what is on offer and how it will develop, so you can identify potential partners and capitalise on these opportunities in the future.
