6 Touring in Tasmania Tasmania has 11 diverse touring routes, with a wide range of attractions and driving experiences. For a safe holiday, please observe the following: Tasmania's spectacular scenery means that roads often cross rugged and mountainous terrain. Winding roads can mean your trip may take longer than you think. Many native animals wander onto our roads at night, and are a potential threat to your safety and their own. So when the sun drops, so should your speed. Drive to suit the road conditions. Speed limits are clearly marked - usually 50 or 60 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h on other roads. Speed cameras and radar guns, both fixed and mobile, are widely used. A current driverʼs licence issued in Australian States or Territories permits you to drive in Tasmania for a continuous period of up to 12 months. Current international licences are permitted, but only for three months. The wearing of seat belts is compulsory. The booklet is divided into regions, starting with the South. SOUTH H o b a r t, Tasmaniaʼs capital city is an intriguing blend of heritage and lifestyle, scenery and vibrant culture. Hobart is a city of fine restaurants, bustling markets, fun, festivals and entertainment where sandstone cottages and warehouses echo Georgian days. Take a harbour cruise, or drive to the summit of Mt elson or Mt Wellington. Twenty-five kilometres away is the start of the Convict Trail, the historic town of Richmond. Close by are the neat vineyards and wineries of the Coal River Valley, home of superb coolclimate wines. Then pass through Sorell on to the Tasman Peninsula where you can discover our convict past at the historic site at Port Arthur and take scenic walks to awesome sea cliffs. South of Hobart is the Huon Trail. The B68 takes you to Kettering, the sheltered port of the Bruny Island car ferry and the gateway to the beautiful 4 waters of the DʼEntrecasteaux Channel. The A6 takes you to Huonville and the Huon River, Franklin where boat builders learn the traditional skills of shaping Huon pine, Geeveston close to the rainforest canopy of the awesome AirWalk and the dolomite caves at Hastings. At Granton, north of Hobart you have the option of travelling the Lyell Highway to The Rivers Run touring route of the Derwent Valley and Central Highlands or crossing the Bridgewater Bridge to the start of the Heritage Highway to Launceston. The Lyell Highway follows the course of the Derwent River towards Tasmaniaʼs mountains and wilderness, through the historic town of ew orfolk and past the historic Salmon Ponds trout hatchery. Beyond historic Hamilton and Ouse the highway climbs to the central plateaux and Lake St Clair, Australiaʼs deepest lake. A number of routes divert into the highlands where lakes teem with trout and Bothwell, a stately town on the edge of the lakes country.

13 ORTH Launceston is a city of contrasts. A short walk from the graceful Victorian facades of the city is the scenic Cataract Gorge Reserve, with its tree rhododendrons and peacocks. Thereʼs also the acclaimed Wood Design Collection and the Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery with its fine collection of colonial art. The Tamar Valley Touring Route offers rich heritage including Australiaʼs oldest continuously operating pilot station at Low Head, and the historic gold museum at Beaconsfield. The Tamar Valley Wine Route is our best-established wine region producing unique cool-climate wines. The orth-east Trail starts where the wine route finishes - at the lovely township of Bridport. It passes through the neat croplands of Scottsdale, B r a n x h o l m and Ringarooma, echoes of a mining heritage at Derby and the Blue Tier, farm cheese at Pyengana. Then on to Tomahawk, Gladstone and the Mt William ational Park, where forester kangaroos and wombats graze in numbers. To the South of Launceston the Heritage Highway follows the route to Hobart, pioneered in 1807 by explorers who took eight days to traverse the island. Today you can explore colonial towns and villages, with sandstone churches and bridges. 18 Cosy Cabin parks offer great accommodation, from unpowered camping sites to very comfortable spa cottages. With seven Cosy Cabin parks and five affiliate parks, we are the largest provider of quality cabin accommodation in Tasmania. Every park has quality amenities including BBQ areas or a camp kitchen, laundry, play area, pay phone and shop. Each park is close to great tourist attractions and provides a different range of recreational activities that could include half court tennis, games room, bouncing pillows or spas and saunas. Cabins and cottages are clean, warm and provide good cooking facilities with crockery, cutlery, pots & pans. There is always a private shower and toilet in your cabin. Cosy Cabins sleep up to 6 in a double or queen bed and 4 bunks, often in two bedrooms. A compact kitchen provides guests with most appliances including a toaster, fridge and microwave. There is a dining/ sitting area with a heater and TV. Cosy Cottages have two bedrooms and sleep 4 to 6 people in two layouts; two double beds or one double bed and 2 sets of bunks. Cottages have a larger kitchen with a full size stove and fridge, plus a sitting area with a snug gas log heater and a superior bathroom. Great for a longer stay. Spa Cottages have all the facilities of a cottage with the luxury of a double spa. Backpackers is available in our two wilderness parks at Strahan and Cradle Mountain.
