10 KAITERITERI, MARAHAU & ABEL TASMAN NATIONAL PARK Kaiteriteri and Marahau, with their stunning golden sand beaches and blue-green water, are the southern gateways to Abel Tasman National Park and Wainui in Golden Bay is the northern entrance. The park is New Zealand s only coastal national park. The 60km Abel Tasman Coastal Track is one of the Department of Conservation s Great Walks. The sheltered bays are popular for cruising, sailing and sea kayaking. The Abel Tasman Coastal Track offers easy to moderate hiking over three five days and the sheltered coastline is popular for sea kayaking. 13 There s just one road in and out of Golden Bay, and those who travel over Takaka Hill are richly rewarded by sweeping views of rugged mountains, fertile valleys and stunning beaches. At the northern most tip of the South Island is the remarkable 30km long Farewell Spit this is one of the largest sand spits in the world and is designated as a Wetland of International Importance. Kahurangi National Park is the second largest national park in New Zealand and home to the Heaphy Track. HORSE RIDING, WHARARIKI BEACH, GOLDEN BAY KAHURANGI NATIONAL PARK Includes incredible tramping tracks from Golden Bay in the north, south to Murchison and Tapawera, and to the West Coast. The alpine village of St Arnaud is on the edge of Nelson Lakes National Park, with both easy and challenging walks close by. A short drive over the Whangamoa Ranges links Nelson with Picton in the Marlborough Sounds where passenger ferries arrive from the North Island. 22 CYCLING IN NELSON TASMAN This cycling mecca is home to two Great Rides as part of Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail. The Nelson/ Richmond mountainbike trail network is an International Mountain Bicycling Association accredited Gold Ride Centre. For more information, including where to purchase a Tasman s Great Taste Trail, 175kms, NZ Great Ride (on-going construction to 2020), graded easy. Relish the offerings of sumptuous flavours from roadside stalls, wineries and craft breweries. Includes a ferry ride from Rabbit Island to Mapua and goes to the 1.4km Spooners Tunnel, New Zealand's longest decommissioned rail tunnel Dun Mountain Trail, 43kms, NZ Great Ride climbing to over 878m. Beginning and ending close to the heart of Nelson city, this mountain bike trail follows an historic mining railway line to an alpine environment with stunning scenery Heaphy Track, 78kms, a remote, multi-day, seasonal ride, that has no equal in New Zealand. 24 HERITAGE, ART & CULTURE The Nelson Tasman region is the creative arts capital of New Zealand with over 300 working artists drawing energy from the spectacular natural environment to create artistic expression reflecting life, the landscape and our culture. MAORI CULTURE Maori occupation goes back to the 14th century.
