John Reid Mr. Helicopter started Helicopters New Zealand and was a pioneer for the New Zealand helicopter industry. Second generation pilot Bill Reid started Nelson Helicopters in 1983, initially working on live deer recovery and then moving on to develop tourism in the Nelson and Marlborough regions. The main area of development at the time was the flying of overseas brown trout fishermen into the Kahurangi National Park. Now third generation pilot Toby Reid carries on the legacy that his forefathers created and has renamed the company Reid Helicopters Nelson. Toby, together with his wife Rachael, have established their operation to cater for a wide range of commercial services and strive to develop new and innovative products to show to the world. We are so appreciative of the wonderful area we live and fly in. We aim to keep it this way for the next generation to enjoy just as we do. In their efforts to minimize their environmental footprint and give back to the local community, they have been awarded Qualmark Enviro Silver Status. 4 04 // Kahurangi Highlights KAHURANGI HIGHLIGHTS FLIGHT TIME: 40 minutes LANDINGS: 1 TOUR DURATION: 1 Hour In Maori Kahurangi means treasured possession. Kahurangi is New Zealand s most diverse National Park and is home to the greatest range of landforms, habitats and communities of plants and wildlife in the country. This exciting flight takes us southwest from our Wakefield Heliport and enters the park via Ghost Valley and Mt Owen, (it was here Sir Peter Jackson chose a filming location for the trilogy Lord of The Rings ), before landing to enjoy spectacular views of the mountainous surrounds and rock formations. 5 Blue Lake Express // 05 BLUE LAKE EXPRESS FLIGHT TIME: 60 minutes LANDINGS: 1 TOUR DURATION: 2 Hours Rotomairewhenua - Blue Lake is a small lake located in Nelson Lakes National Park, in the northern reaches of New Zealand s Southern Alps. Sacred to local Māori, it has the clearest natural fresh water in the world. This flight takes us south into the Nelson Lakes where we enjoy spectacular views of Lake Rotoiti, Lake Rotoroa and Blue Lake, before a mountain landing on the National Park boundary. Please note that Blue Lake is a protected wilderness area which we are only permitted to overfly. This location is a two day journey on foot. 8 08 // LOTR Tours LORD OF THE RINGS HELICOPTER TOURS IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE SPECTACULAR SCENERY BROUGHT TO LIFE BY PETER JACKSON IN THE LORD OF THE RINGS. THE ULTIMATE LORD OF THE RINGS TOUR FLIGHT TIME: 90 minutes LANDINGS: 2 TOUR DURATION: 2.5 Hours Combine the Mt Olympus and Mt Owen tours for the ultimate Lord of the Rings Experience! First track northwest into Golden Bay for a landing on Mt Olympus to explore the site of South of Rivendell. Reboard the helicopter again to fly south towards Mt Owen, above the vast and untouched terrain that is the very heart of the Kahurangi National Park. Land once more to view the rocky landscape that became the Exit from the Mines of Moria. From here it s a short flight back to our Wakefield Heliport with views of Tasman Bay. It was here where Tauriel and Legolas met before heading into Laketown - as seen in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Salisbury Falls can be added to our Mt Olympus Single Site Tour or Mt Owen/Mt Olympus Combo Tour for an extra $450 (R44) or $600 (Eurocopter) NZD incl GST. Please allow an extra 45 minutes tour time. 9 MT OLYMPUS - SOUTH OF RIVENDELL LOTR Tours // 09 FLIGHT TIME: 60 minutes LANDINGS: 1 TOUR DURATION: 2 Hours + Fly northwest over the Kahurangi National Park and into Golden Bay. Land on Mt Olympus to view the strange pinnacle rock formations that were used to portray the rugged country South of Rivendell. It was here, as the nine rested and cooked a meal, that the crebain crows of Saruman searching for news of the One Ring spied the travellers below. Hurriedly extinguishing their fire they hid behind the pinnacles in an attempt to escape discovery. Mt Olympus sprouts rocky outcrops which over time have been eroded by weather to form incredible columnar shapes. It is an extremely remote location and can only be reached by helicopter. Filming was undertaken here for ten days with the result being one of the most moving moments in the film. It was here, distraught at the loss of Gandalf, the remaining members of the Fellowship escape the mines of Moria and throw themselves to the ground in their grief. Mt Owen showcases some of the oldest rock in New Zealand and has priceless geological properties. As you ascend a landscape of glaciated marble karst is exposed and you appreciate the challenges for film crew working within the harsh alpine environment. 11 THE WILD NORTH WEST The Wild North West // 11 FLIGHT TIME: 120 minutes LANDINGS: 3 TOUR DURATION: 5 Hours Tracking west into the heart of the Kahurangi, our first stop lands at a remote alpine location where we can enjoy the overwhelming surrounds of New Zealand s second largest National Park. From the mountains we descend further west to Westhaven Inlet and track the rugged and remotely beautiful and wild north-west coastline for a landing on the beach where we can explore sand dunes and eroded rock formations. Here we will sit back, relax and enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch and glass of local wine. After lunch we lift off to explore Farewell Spit and Golden Bay before our final landing at Awaroa Bay in the Abel Tasman National Park. A short bush walk through aged Manuka forest takes us up close to the pristine waters and golden sand beaches that make the Abel Tasman world famous. 17 NELSON TO QUEENSTOWN VIA THE GLACIERS AND MT COOK Private Charters // 17 PRIVATE CHARTERS - SAMPLE ITINERARIES WELLINGTON TO NELSON VIA THE MARLBOROUGH SOUNDS This Tour Incorporates Our D Urville Indulgence Product (see p.13 for details.) This flight basically covers the whole of the South Island and is a once in a lifetime experience! Departing Nelson in the mid-morning we fly south over the Nelson Lakes National Park, which is the start of the main divide or the range running the length of the South Island dividing the east and west coasts. We fly the main divide on the western side (weather permitting) as far south as Franz Josef or Fox Glaicer for our first stop, which includes a lunch break, and to check out one of these small but buzzy west coast townships. After lunch we head inland up into the West Coast Glaciers, overflying the amazing ice falls and crevasses, to the top of the glacier and then around Mt Cook which opens up some amazing views into the dry MacKenzie Basin, the Central Lakes and back down to the West Coast. Tracking further south along the main divide takes us parallel to the vast Landsborough Valley until we reach the Southern Lakes. CANCELLATION POLICY Cancellation by Reid Helicopters Nelson: If the weather conditions make flying unsafe on the day of the trip Reid Helicopters Nelson will cancel the flight. This is at the pilot s discretion and there is no charge in this situation. Cancellation by the customer or agent: Cancellation within 30 days prior to the trip = 25% of total booking cost Cancellation within 48 hours prior to the trip = 50% of total booking cost Cancellation within 48 hours of the trip = 100% of total booking cost TROUT FISHING The Nelson Marlborough region offers some of the best brown trout fishing in the world. For over 20 years the Reid family have been transporting locals and visitors from all over the world to some of our best known fishing spots. The Karamea, Roaring Lion, Crow and Mohikinui Rivers are just some of the world renowned rivers in the Kahurangi National Park which offer fly fisherman a chance to catch a trophy fish (catches of 7lb brown trout and above are common). Guides are available for day trips or if you are already familiar with the area you have the option of day trips from your accommodation or overnight hut stays. WEIGHT & SIZE GUIDELINES Helicopter weight and balance changes with every flight because of individual passenger weights, luggage and the amount of fuel required. It is important that we have accurate body weights from every passenger prior to flights commencing. CAA regulations require all passengers to declare their weight on check-in and if required, passengers and carry on luggage will be weighed before the flight as we cannot exceed the helicopters permissible weight. Please notify us when booking if a standard airline seat belt is too small (or you weigh over 100 KG (220 LBS)) and if you are travelling with a toddler. Please call our office for more information.
