6 Getting around in Melbourne Public transport is a great way to get around Melbourne. Contact Metlink for information on timetables and how and where to buy tickets. Call or visit their website Tickets are valid for all public transport, including trains, buses and trams. Tickets are available from vending machines at train stations, on trams or buses, or pre-purchased at selected shops like newsagents. It is essential to have a valid ticket as you can be fined more than $100 for not carrying a ticket. Trains Flinders Street Station, corner of Flinders Street and Swanston Street, is the hub of Melbourne City s trains with all trains beginning or ending their journey at the station. From Flinders Street Station you can access an underground service called the City Loop which includes five stations servicing Melbourne city: Southern Cross, Flagstaff, Melbourne Central, Parliament and Flinders Street Station. There are 16 different train lines out to the suburbs which are all linked to tram and bus services. Trains coming in from country Victoria and interstate routes arrive at Southern Cross Station in the city on the corner of Spencer Street and Collins Street. 6

7 Trams Services run regularly from 5am until midnight Monday to Saturday and from 7am to 11pm Sundays. On weekends and public holidays, services are reduced. Many of the tram services link up to bus and train routes. Board trams at sign-posted stops on the side of the road and from central islands in the CBD. These spots have a map with route numbers and times the route number is displayed at the front of the tram. To catch a tram, signal to the driver with a raised hand. Motorists should stop when a tram has its doors open, but it is always a good idea to look to see if there are any vehicles approaching before boarding the tram. City Circle Tram- Free Service The City Circle tram is a free tram that takes you around the city running along Flinders Street, Harbour Esplanade, La Trobe Street and Spring Street. You can jump on and off where you like. Trams run in both directions every 12 minutes from 10am-6pm seven days a week. 7
