1 Drive Torque D I G I T A L I S S U E 1 J U L Y, Welcome to Drive Torque Digital! I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : President s AGM Report AGM & New Committee Sydney 4WD & Adventure Show Bash & Beyond Extended Trip 3 The committee for some time has been discussing options for our magazine; digital or print, half and half or alternate options? A survey of members was conducted last year and the majority preference was for half printed and half digital. Looking into this a little further, what is the constant issue for all editors, is receiving content on time, or indeed, receiving content at all. Digital media also plays an increasing role in our Club communications and between Facebook and our Club website, members do not need to wait for the magazine to come out to see photos of past trips or read about what happened. More often than not, we have seen photos of trips before the members have even returned home! This is not a bad thing, however it has led us to rethink the way we do things, including Drive Torque. After much deliberation and input, we are trialing a monthly digital newsletter and an annual Drive Torque publication. This will be discussed with all Club members at upcoming General Meetings. The newsletter is aimed to inform members of what is coming up, contain brief articles on everything from trips, upcoming events, campsite & product reviews, new initiatives, reminders, committee reports and hopefully, much more! The annual Drive Torque publication is aiming to be given out at the Christmas party each year and will feature our Club year in review. This will include more detailed trip articles from throughout the year, a combination of committee reports, coloured photos, a list of where we travelled during the year and also any other articles that members wish to submit. The annual Drive Torque will be put together by a sub-committee and we are aiming for full colour. If members are unable to make the Christmas Party it will be posted. This first edition is a brief introduction that we hope you enjoy. If anyone has any feedback, ideas, suggestions or input, please let us know! Jo Quinn Editor & PR Officer Christmas in 3 July at Olinda Camp Review 3 Relay For Life 4 Upcoming Trips 4 Who Am I? 4 Members Recently Out & About Committee Contacts 5 5 Drive Torque Deadlines The deadline for Drive Torque will be the nd Friday of the month, the same time as our General Meetings. The digital Drive Torque newsletter will be ed at the end of each month. If a trip report misses the deadline for that month, it will be held over for the annual printed edition. The size of the newsletter will dictated by the number of contributions received. Reports submitted will be reduced for this publication, but will be included in it s entirety in the annual printed edition. Please send images or I will need to get them from our Facebook pages. I would prefer different photos to those we have already seen, if possible. Please send articles & photos to; editor@subaruclub.com.au
2 P A G E President s AGM Report Welcome to all and good to see great numbers here today for the AGM and Picnic Day. A very big thank you to those members and Committee people who have supported the club with their time and dedication. Nature of clubs and groups operating in these times are changing as we face new challenges in the changing social environment and during the last 1 months we have been introducing small changes to the way we do business. Some of these new initiatives include, meeting format, meetings in the field, this AGM format we started last year & Outback Oscars. Social media has helped reduce numbers at meetings so we need to use this media in our favour. As I re-call some highlights of the last year I recall many positive things and feedback, new people involved, the club membership increased, driver training tried some new trips, the club returned to the 4WD Adventure Show, our club delegates have been engaging with the association, good PR exposure and great numbers attending trips. There have been very few negative or disappointed members, I understand 8 members and some 130 people will not always see eye to eye but I can only recall negative situations in the last 1 months compared to countless positive comment and enjoyment. Looking forward... 4WD show again, Oscars, new Christmas party location, more day trips, continue taking more meetings on the road, close to Sydney. We really do need to take a close look at how we do business with our newsletters and magazines. As we move on to the election of the club committee I encourage new people to have a go on the committee and put up your hand as a new trip leader. I look forward to seeing everyone on trips during the coming year & thank you for your continued support. Mark Honor Geoff & John catching up at the AGM picnic 017 AGM & New Committee The 017 AGM was held on Sunday nd July at Western Sydney Parklands. The weather was certainly kind to us and it was a mild Winters day, ideal to enjoy a picnic. The Club provided morning tea and a BBQ lunch for all those members that attended. There was in-excess of 45 Club members in attendance and it was a good opportunity for everyone to catch up with each other. The AGM followed the July General Meeting and all committee positions were filled unopposed. The incoming committee is; President: Mark Honor Vice President: Sandi Strickland Secretary: Cath DeSantis Treasurer: Sandra Moss Membership: Karolyn Honor Trip Convener: Troy Strickland Trip Convener: Sandi Strickland Driver Awareness: Brett Atkins Driver Awareness: Brian Flood Delegate: David Wellham Delegate: John Hocking Technical: Brett Hampson Social: Karen Campbell PR: Jo Quinn Webmaster: Troy Strickland Editor: Jo Quinn Catering: Karen Campbell Arms: Robert Moss Fundraising: Chris Mifsud & Kelly Maxwell Congratulations to all! Sydney 4WD & Adventure Show D R I V E T O R Q U E The 4WD and Adventure Shows are back in Sydney, Adelaide and Perth in 017! This year they are celebrating the 5 year Anniversary and will take a walk through history to look at what were some of the big Game Changers in the industry over the past few decades. He's traveled all over the countryside, and now he's heading to the 4WD and Adventure Shows! Mal Leyland is an Aussie legend, and it s exciting to know that Mal will be sharing some of his greatest stories with everyone at this year's show! Our Club is also having a stall this year. We still need members to help promote our great Club. Please register on the Club website. SHOW DETAILS 017: Friday 13th October: 9am-5pm Saturday 14th October: 9am-5pm Sunday 15th October: 9am-4pm
3 D I G I T A L I S S U E 1 P A G E 3 Bash & Beyond Extended Trip Our Club members at the Big Red Bash; The world s most remote concert 0 Club members participated in the extended trip out to Birdsville for the Big Red Bash, the world s most remote concert held at the base of Big Red on the edge of the Simpson Desert. Inclement weather early on saw plans change as we had to forgo the visit to Innamincka & Tibooburra enroute to Birdsville. Up through Cunnamulla & Charleville saw us arrive a swelling outback town of remote Queensland in time for dinner at the Birdsville Pub. The Big Red Bash was truly a unique experience where we enjoyed a plethora of Aussie artists perform under the stars in front of the biggest sand dune in The Simpson. After leaving The Bash we went on to Bedourie for the camel races, followed by 3 days in the Diamantina National Park, our Aussie Rock theme night was a laugh, however getting booed out of Windorah Pub when NSW lost the State of Origin was not! A full trip poem & images will be in the annual magazine. A great trip with awesome people, lots of laughs, dirt and memorable moments topped off by the Big Red Bash! Trip Leaders: Jo Quinn & Josh Parkinson Christmas In July at Olinda Christmas in July was held at Olinda on the 1st & nd of July, 017. A few images from what appeared to be a chilly weekend! Trip Leader: Sandi Strickland Camp Review: Mulga Creek Hotel, Byrock Name: Mulga Creek Hotel Location: Byrock, 70km South of Bourke NSW Camp Fees: $15 (unpowered) Camp ground located behind the pub. Amenities: Hot showers & toilets, hotel with meals, limited grassy sites, huge camp area, fire pits Rooms: Hotel rooms & cabins also available. Cabins leave a lot to be desired as at June 017, but motel rooms basic, clean & tidy. Food: The hotel does a fantastic feed at a very reasonable price. Meals are big. Phone Service: Telstra outside (no service in the pub) Close By: Various walking tracks leave from the camp area, Aboriginal watering hole located close to camp, 70km into Bourke, bit over a 100km north of Nyngan. Overall: If you can push a bit further than Nyngan for the first night of an extended trip, it is a great place to stay. Caption describing picture or graphic.
