3 Flying Green! We take our theme this year both from the overwhelming support to green the industry that has taken off this past year, but also from what grew out of our planning meeting in Louisville, home of the Kentucky Derby. Consider a time when the horse was still the civilized world s leader in transportation. Transport horses produced pounds of manure a day and about a quart of urine, much of it distributed along their route. The manure was heaped in piles, ground up by traffic, and airborne. It attracted flies, a key vector for typhoid. The stench was described as intolerable. One hundred years ago, Harold Bolce, writing in Appleton's Magazine argued that most of the sanitary and economic problems of the modern city were caused by the horse, and that each year 20,000 New Yorkers died from maladies created by horse manure. In 1908 it was estimated that at least 120,000 horses clopped through New York alone. But besides the stench and disease, the noise created by horseshoes and wagons on cobblestone streets was a constant annoyance. Benjamin Franklin referred to it as the thundering of coaches, chariots, chaises, wagons, drays and the whole fraternity of noise which assailed the ears of Philadelphians. Boston and New York both passed ordinances banning traffic from certain streets to protect hospitals and legislative chambers. In the 1890s, a writer for Scientific American noted that the sounds of traffic on busy New York streets made conversation nearly impossible, while author William Dean Howells complained that the sharp clatter of horseshoes on pavement tormented his ear. Despite their apparent clean and modern accessibility, airplanes do make noise and generate exhaust emissions. We will gather in Palm Springs March 2-5, to explore some of the ways we might deal with these impacts. Join us oh and please leave your horses at the stable thank you. Donna Reid Symposium Organizer 3

4 4 About the Symposium This symposium has been organized under the umbrella of the University of California for 23 years. It has grown from a small gathering of mostly California airport operators to strategize how to handle noise issues to become a large international gathering of more than 300 stakeholders representing all perspectives to look at noise and emissions issues. The symposium addresses regulations, policy, legal issues, communications and technology. We welcome novice airport staff and experienced engineers and consultants. We attract politicians and community members affected by impacts. The symposium is an important place to network with others working in this area. It is a great place to learn about how the environmental impacts of one mode of transport are addressed from a multitude of different perspectives. We also provide opportunities to promote your business or service in our exhibit area. Our Venue The Hilton Palm Springs Resort We re back again at the lovely Hilton, which boasts average temperatures in March well into the 70 s. Within a short walk from the hotel are luscious golf courses, rugged desert mountains, world-class eateries and a delightful panoply of old Hollywood history, swimming pools and casinos. Hilton Palm Springs Resort 400 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way Palm Springs, CA Phone: (760) U.S. Toll Free: (800) Web: To obtain the special room rate for symposium attendees of $168 mention Flying Green when you call and book your room before the end of January. Getting to Palm Springs For the first time this year we have an official airline carrier. American Airlines will be our official carrier. Call (800) (mention code A7428AP) to book a specially-discounted flight. Palm Springs has its own airport and in addition travelers can fly into Ontario California about an hour s drive away (there are shuttles available too) or Los Angeles International Airport, about 2 hours away.

5 What s New This Year Tutorials This year we are offering 4 concurrent tutorials two introductory 101 s for Noise and Air Quality (very popular with newbies) and two more advanced sessions on Funding Noise Programs and How to Do Air Quality. See inside this program for details. Symposium Format This year we are staging a debate. Six top experts will debate on whether the public benefits of aviation outweigh the impacts to our environment. This is sure to get everyone s neurons firing! Training the Next Generation of Leaders In response to industry needs for training the Next Generation of aviation leaders, we are launching a new Poster Session to give students an opportunity to present the results of their research. This session will also be open to anyone to submit an abstract. In addition to soliciting abstracts we are holding a Student Paper Contest. We plan to hold a small reception with the Poster Viewing on Tuesday evening. For more details on abstracts and the contest or if you are interested in hosting the reception please call. Organizations interested in sponsoring students may apply to be Hosts. Hosts help defray costs for students participating in the symposium. As a Host, you would supply a student s airline ticket or travel to the symposium, a hotel room, and cover their registration fee of $75. This is a great way to meet the next generation who will be entering the workforce in a few years. We will work as a sort of matchmaking service trying to match students up to organizations. If you are interested in becoming a host, or in being hosted, please contact us for more details. Green Meetings In an effort to practice what we preach we are working with the Hilton to improve environmentally-friendly practices. We are also encouraging attendees to offset their carbon impacts. For more details visit our website. Community Meeting We are holding a Forum for community member attendees to network and share information on Monday evening March 3rd from 5-6 pm. Sponsorships and Exhibiting Several organizations sponsor our receptions, breakfasts and breaks. We also have some room this year for Exhibitors. This level of participation gives your organization greater visibility with this key stakeholder group. If you are interested in these possibilities for your organization, please call for more details. 2nd Annual Golf Scramble Join us where the ghosts of Bob Hope and Jack Nicklaus still hope for a bogey on the fabled Cimarron Golf Course for a 7 am tee-time on Sunday March 2nd.
