4 Chair s Message Chair s Message NATIONAL AUSTRALIA DAY COUNCIL The National Australia Day Council (NADC) inspires national pride and spirit to enrich the lives of all Australians, and I m delighted at our achievements this year on our key focus areas of participation, meaning and recognition. Our research shows us that Australians see Australia Day as a uniting day: a day to recognise the values, culture and diversity of our nation. I m so pleased that in 2013, almost 18 million Australians participated in Australia Day. This shows us that our national day really is a reflection of Australia: a day to celebrate both our community as a whole and the 22 million stories that make up our nation. Of course, Australians also participate in Australia Day because of the amazing array of events that are on offer around the nation. From the fun runs held at dawn right through to when the last cracker is released in the evening, these events are only made possible through the committed efforts of local State and Territory event organisers. I recently had the opportunity to meet more than 150 of these brilliant individuals at the Australia Day National Conference in Canberra and I am encouraged by the delegates who had travelled across the country and their eagerness to learn how they can continue to inspire pride and spirit in their own community. As part of the National Conference, we launched the call for nominations for the Australian of the Year Awards. Through this program, we encourage all Australians to nominate someone who inspires them, makes a difference in their community and embodies the values that they feel are truly Australian. I m so honoured that we deliver this unique and prestigious Australian program that acknowledges so many outstanding Australians and really is the people s Award: one nomination is all it takes to recognise someone you admire. Ita Buttrose AO OBE, Professor Ian Maddocks AM, Akram Azimi and Shane Phillips are great role models that we can all be proud of as our Australians of the Year for has been a year of transition for the NADC, in both leadership and direction, and I m so proud of what has been achieved and all the success we have to build upon for the future. Without the support and dedication of the National Australia Day Network and our key partners we would not be able to achieve these great results. On behalf of the NADC, I would like to thank our State and Territory colleagues, the Australian Government and our corporate sponsors and partners for their ongoing support. 6 CEO s Message CEO s Message NATIONAL AUSTRALIA DAY COUNCIL I have always seen Australia Day as playing an important role in our identity as a nation. It s a day for us to celebrate our Australian spirit: our passion and enthusiasm, our lifestyle, our diversity and our sense of a fair go for all. It s a day to meet over the barbeque and take stock of all that is great about this country of ours, and also to commit to ensuring we make it an even better place for the future. I see the work of the National Australia Day Council (NADC) as a meaningful and important part of the Australian spirit, delivering national programs such as the Australia Day Ambassadors and the Australian Affirmation, events of national significance in the national capital and of course Australia s most eminent awards program the Australian of the Year Awards. As Interim CEO, I have taken the opportunity to embrace this year of transition. In addition to delivering our established programs, there has been an increased focus on our online communication channels as we see people shift to using the internet as a primary way to communicate. We have incorporated this shift into the Awards program directing much of the advertising campaign through digital media. The amazing growth in both the participation and meaning of Australia Day and the Australian of the Year Awards couldn t have been achieved without the dedicated work of the NADC Board and staff, and all members of the Australia Day National Network. I would like to thank you all for your ongoing commitment and I look forward to continuing to work closely with you in the future. Of course, all the great work of the NADC is supported most generously by our partners. I would like to thank government at all levels across the nation who champion the celebration of Australia Day, and particularly acknowledge the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C) who are enormously supportive and share our vision for our national day. I would also like to highlight the genuine commitment we receive from our major corporate sponsors the Commonwealth Bank (Australian of the Year Awards), Woolworths (Ambassador Program), and Australia Post (Corporate Functions). We sincerely appreciate your engagement and enthusiasm for our programs and I look forward to a continuing partnership into the future. Adrian Watts Interim Chief Executive Officer 6

9 Australia Day On Australia Day we celebrate what s great about Australia and being Australian. We achieve this through a focus on participation, meaning and recognition. Through our events, programs and celebrations we instil a sense of pride and national spirit for all Australians. Motivate and encourage all Australians to participate National Advertising Campaign The Celebrate today, live it again tomorrow national advertising campaign developed by George Patterson Y&R ran for the third time in 2013 and received exceptionally good placement. The campaign aims to encourage Australians to actively participate in Australia Day and also to think about what and why they celebrate our national day. The campaign therefore reflects two key aims: encouraging Australians to participate in Australia Day and to reflect on what it means to be Australian. Australia Day NATIONAL AUSTRALIA DAY COUNCIL In 2013, the campaign included the use of both the 15 second and 30 second commercials for television, cinema and radio placement in their original form, while the print, outdoor and online executions were refreshed to better match the message and meaning of the television commercial. The refreshed execution was very striking and worked particularly well for outdoor advertising, where there was an increase across both digital placement and hard copy banner sites. The campaign began slightly earlier than in , from early December to Australia Day. This shift is credited with the dramatic increase of television placement as we were able to lock in the ad placements were locked in earlier. A total media value of 2,539,263 was secured for the campaign, which is up 9% on placement from Australia Day Ambassador Program The NADC again undertook the coordination of this national program, sponsored by Woolworths. The Australia Day Ambassador Program sees high-achieving and inspirational Australians travel across the nation on Australia Day to community celebrations large and small. Ambassadors often undertake key roles at community events, judging competitions, making inspiring speeches and being involved in citizenship ceremonies. Their involvement brings a special point of interest and excitement for local communities. A total of 386 ambassadors visited 416 communities in Australia Day Achievement Medallion Program The Australia Day Achievement Medallion program was well received again in with 1964 medallions distributed to staff in government departments, agencies, and local Australia Day committees in all States and Territories. 9

10 Australia Day NATIONAL AUSTRALIA DAY COUNCIL Australia Post Corporate Functions The annual Australia Day Lunches were held by each of the States and Territories in the week before Australia Day. The lunch program aims to connect the business community with Australia Day, as well as provide the sponsor, Australia Post, with the opportunity to launch its annual Legends stamp edition. Music Legends were honoured in two categories: individuals and bands. Those acknowledged were: John Farnham, Olivia Newton-john, Kylie Minogue, Paul Kelly, Molly Meldrum, AC/DC, Cold Chisel, Men at Work, The Seekers and INXS. Reports from the States and Territories indicate that the Australia Post functions were successful, with attendance figures higher than expected in many States. Australia Day in the Office Australia Day in the Office is a national program which encourages Australian workplaces to celebrate Australia Day with their work colleagues in the week leading up to Australia Day. Australia Day in the Office gives workplaces the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of staff as well as taking stock before the year ahead, while also focussing on all the good things about Australia and being Australian was the second year this program ran nationally, and saw a 39% increase in registrations from Australia Celebrates Concert The Australia Celebrates concert was again held on the lawns of Parliament House on 25 January. In 2013, the concert was broadcast live on ABC1. The Concert was incredibly popular, with crowd numbers up 5,000 on the year before. The popularity of the event was due largely to the line-up, which included Jimmy Barnes, Guy Sebastian, The Presets and Timomatic. Funding received from the ACT Government was invested in enhancements to the concert, including lighting Parliament House and using a helicopter to get aerial footage of the event. National Citizenship and Flag Raising Ceremonies The Australian Flag Raising and Citizenship Ceremony took place at Rond Terrace and was broadcast live on ABC1. This was the second year this format was delivered for this event. Stephanie Brandtz acted as MC on stage and Adam Spencer and Tim Soutphommasane provided commentary to the television audience. Several of the new citizens were interviewed on stage sharing their stories about coming to Australia and their decision to stay. The Governor-General, Her Exellency the Honourable Quentin Bryce AC CVO and the Prime Minister, the Honourable Julia Gillard MP both played key roles on the day. Prominent actor Miriam Margoyles became a citizen at the ceremony, which was also a highlight. 10 The NADC worked closely with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, Australian Defence Force and the ACT Government to deliver this special event.

11 Australia Day in the National Capital The NADC worked in partnership with the ACT Government to present Australia Day activities in Canberra, including the display of street flags and banners and the production of a day-long program of events. Fireworks were planned as the finale of the day, however, due to an extreme weather event, the fireworks were cancelled in Motivate and encourage all Australians to reflect Radio Series In 2013, two radio series were developed to motivate Australians to reflect on the meaning of Australia Day. The Celebrate What s Great series which has become a staple of radio programming leading up to Australia Day was developed once again for the 35+ audience, and a brand new series, Maaate! was produced specifically for a younger demographic. Australia Day NATIONAL AUSTRALIA DAY COUNCIL The Celebrate What s Great series included 15 x 60-second tracks featuring well-known Australians discussing what it means to be Australian. Australians who featured in the series included Geoffrey Rush, Ita Buttrose, Richie Benaud, Jimmy Barnes, Ray Martin and Adam Gilchrist. The Maaate! series comprised 15 x 30-second spots for airplay. It included talent that had more traction with a younger audience, an opener that had a more FM feel and subject matter that was more light-hearted and upbeat. Youth oriented stations responded well to this format, particularly in rural and regional areas. Talent used in the new series included Gotye, Charlie Pickering, Julia Morris, Urthboy and Ellyse Perry. The two 2013 radio series were broadcast on 294 stations in 196 unique markets right across Australia. This was an increase of 61 stations compared to the 233 achieved with the 2012 series, and some stations chose to run both radio series. The total value of this placement was 289,410. Australia Day Launch Event A media launch for Australia Day was held on 18 January, Under the concept, Taking a moment to reflect on the good things we share, the media launch was an authentic reflection on our national day and the many different meanings and feelings Australians have about Australia Day. The launch highlighted our Indigenous culture, volunteering, active citizenship and our multicultural society, and provided the vehicle for the media to genuinely contemplate the meaning of Australia Day, with serious and sincere messages regarding Reconciliation and diversity. The launch was held on the turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground and featured a Welcome to Country lead by Auntie Joy Murphy Wandin and participation by 2012 Australian of the Year Geoffrey Rush, 2012 Young Australian of the Year Marita Cheng, Adam Gilchrist, the Seekers, Men at Work, Australia Day Ambassador Elizabeth Chong, Ahmed Dini and representatives of the Australian Somali Football Association and volunteers from Rotary. 11

12 Australia Day NATIONAL AUSTRALIA DAY COUNCIL Australian Citizenship Affirmation on Australia Day The National Australia Day Council (NADC) was delighted to partner with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) once again to promote the Australian Citizenship Affirmation on Australia Day The Australian Citizenship Affirmation is based on the pledge of commitment made by conferees at citizenship ceremonies. The Affirmation gives those who are already Australians the same opportunity to declare their pride and commitment to our great country. The NADC promotes the Australian Citizenship Affirmation to Local Councils and to Australia Day event organisers across Australia to encourage the audience to include an Australia Citizenship Affirmation in their Australia Day events (or any local event) which then motivates event attendees to reflect on what Australian citizenship means to them. In 2013, there were 27,597 orders for Affirmation resource materials which were distributed to 112 local councils around the country. Create a program which is inclusive of all Australians Reconciliation Action Plan The NADC Reconciliation Action Plan was reviewed and continued to be implemented throughout the year. The NADC is committed to playing a part in the journey of Reconciliation by helping all Australians to move forward with a better understanding of our shared past and how we might build a better future together. Leading the Australia Day Network The NADC works with over 700 local government areas to ensure that Australia Day events around the country are appropriate and sensitive to their local communities by providing advice and resources. For example, in 2013 Canberra hosted the Australia Day National Conference for Australia Day event organisers. The Conference provided valuable training and development and information on Reconciliation Australia s diverse communities and cultural awareness. There were case study sessions on how to deliver inclusive and effective Australia Day events. These efforts ensure that grass roots events and activities are inclusive and accessible for the entire community. Media Australia Day media releases were translated into 10 languages for distribution to Australia s ethnic media to ensure accessible communications. Ethnic media agencies were also encouraged to distribute the Australia Day national campaign materials. 12

13 Diverse entertainment Artists from culturally and linguistically diverse audience groups were engaged to perform at Australia Day events and a diverse range of events that appeal to all audiences were held across the nation. Online engagement The online audience was engaged through an accessible website and meaningful and reflective content and discussion via social media. 15 Australian of the Year Awards Each year the Awards celebrate the achievement and contribution of extraordinary Australians across four categories, Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year (60+), Young Australia of the Year (16 30), and Australia s Local Hero. The Awards profile a broad range of citizens who are role models for us all and inspire us through their achievements to make our own contribution to creating a better Australia. Inspire Australians as a result of the awards program National Announcement The national recipients of the Australian of the Year Awards 2013 were announced by the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon Julia Gillard MP, at a public ceremony in front of Parliament House in Canberra on 25 January The hour-long announcement was broadcast live nationally on ABC1 from 6.00pm which attracted an audience of 289,000. ABC Local Radio broadcast a special Australian of the Year national evening program between 7 10pm live from the Awards site. The announcement attracted strong editorial coverage in the TV, print and radio media, reaching a cumulative audience of 32,822,204 and with an overall advertising space rate of 2,844,038 (online statistics are not included). Australian of the Year, Ita Buttrose AO OBE; Young Australian of the Year, Akram Azimi and Senior Australian of the Year, Professor Ian Maddocks AM attended the National Flag Raising and Citizenship Ceremony in Canberra on Australia Day then travelled to Sydney and were guests of honour at the Australia Day celebrations at Darling Harbour. Australian of the Year 2012 Geoffrey Rush gave his final speech as Australian of the Year at a lunch hosted by major sponsor the Commonwealth Bank on 25 January. Media coverage of the speech was significant and was broadcast on both Sky News and ABC News 24. Major Sponsor, the Commonwealth Bank, selected eight national Award finalists (one from each State and Territory) and commissioned a four minute film for each. The films were shown on social media sites in the lead up to the National Announcement and then packaged together for broadcast on Channel Ten and the Discovery Channel on Australia Day. Community Participation The national Award recipients have all been very generous with their time accepting a number of requests to speak at a wide variety of community events. NSW finalists toured Northern NSW from 7 10 April 2013 speaking at schools and community groups. The Tour of Honour for the 2013 program will be held in July, where Ita Buttrose will speak at a community forum with Jonty Bush Young Australian of the Year 2009, and will be broadcast on ABC Local Radio. Ita Buttrose will then travel to Perth and join Akram Azimi for a number of speaking events at education institutions and business forums. 16 Australian of the Year Awards NATIONAL AUSTRALIA DAY COUNCIL Build the Awards brand to inspire widespread community interest and involvement in the program Nominations campaign Nominations for the 2013 Awards were officially launched on 5 July 2012 by the Prime Minister The Honourable Julia Gillard MP, at a morning tea function in Melbourne. There was strong media coverage on the day as NADC Chair Adam Gilchrist conducted 25 syndicated radio interviews which fed in to 183 stations and markets; this resulted in 130,000 worth of media coverage from radio alone nominations were received for 2135 individuals. The Awards website was refreshed to include an upgraded nomination form and an Honour Roll designed to profile all previous finalists and recipients since the beginning of the Awards program in The website, Honour Roll and nomination form are all mobile optimised allowing greater access across more devices. Web traffic was strong with 82,305 visits throughout the nomination period, 78% of which were new visitors. Social media audience and engagement continued to increase particularly on Facebook, a platform which opens up new opportunities to create a different style of content to suit online communities. In particular, there was a strong focus on profiling nominees so the community could see and relate to the range of people that are nominated. Corporate partner engagement continued to increase with a particular focus on the nomination period as a key opportunity to profile their association and support nominations. Stronger engagement with community groups has been established to encourage more nominations. Strengthen the management of the Awards program Sponsorship funding remains strong. All 10 Award sponsors have renewed their agreements for the 2014 program and in some cases signed a multiple year agreement. All finalists and recipients were of an appropriate calibre and were well received. An efficient and effective business plan was developed and delivered and each phase was reviewed upon its completion. Collaboration with the national network continued with regular network meetings held to discuss and improve the program. Carolyn Ludovici National Manager, Australian of the Year Awards 16

19 Corporate Services Maintain positive and regular communication within the Australia Day network to maximise program outcomes The NADC facilitated two planning meetings of the national network, with all state and territories represented at each. The national network has maintained its strength and level of joint programs. To support the delivery and administration of the programs, the NADC distributed a total of 1.36m in grants and sponsorship to these organisations. The NADC continued to negotiate major sponsorship agreements with Australia Post and Woolworths which were inclusive of all states and territories. Ensure high standards of corporate planning and governance throughout the organisation NADC programs were directly aligned to the priorities and actions of the NADC Plan. The CEO role was advertised following the departure of Mr Graham West in February Mr Adrian Watts acted in the role until Mr Jeremy Lasek joined the NADC in September Regular board and audit committee meetings were held with comprehensive and timely reporting. The Board Executive Committee, whose objective is to provide ad-hoc advice, assistance and approvals to NADC senior management, provided ongoing advice and support throughout the year. The NADC reduced its environmental impact by offsetting 100 per cent of its estimated carbon emissions of air travel, vehicle fleet and utilities. These emissions, totalling 85 tonnes, were offset by the planting of 318 trees through Greenfleet, Corporate Services NATIONAL AUSTRALIA DAY COUNCIL Maintain financial viability of the organisation NADC s surplus reflects the NADC s continued efforts to maintain a strong equity position. Members equity at 30 June 2013 was 1.05m representing 15% of the year s expenditure. This is a strong achievement and is the result of continued success in raising sponsorship and tight control on expenditure. A total of 3.62m of cash and quantifiable contra sponsorship and partnership funds were secured for the year. This represents 50% of total income. Adrian Watts Interim Chief Executive Officer 19
