2 Brian Tidyman President. Firstly, I would like to again thank the Committee of the Sub-Branch for their efforts on ANZAC Day 2018 and to the residents of Hervey Bay for their support on the day. I think you will all agree that both services were excellent. The Sub-Branch will be conducting six services during this year as follows: July 8 th Rimau, July 27 th Korea Memorial Day August 15 th VP Day September 14 th Peacekeepers Day and November 11 th Remembrance Day. Welfare section is again very busy with clients and home/hospital visits. The number of clients is also increasing and my thanks to Carol, Vicki and the team for their dedication to Welfare. Pension section is also very busy with claims and, with the loss of one advocate to Maryborough RSL and another having some downtime on doctor s orders, the workload has fallen on to two advocates. If you are seeking help with Pensions please be patient as you will be attended to ASAP. Thanks to Terry, Tim, Susan and Sue for their dedication. Until next time please be happy and healthy. Army Your job in the service? Gun number and driver then RDI at Puckapunyal. Most memorable moment whilst serving? There were too many to name but suffice to say I enjoyed my time in the service. What did you do after leaving the Military and for how long? I joined the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in Melbourne where I served for 22 years reaching the rank of Station Officer. Why did you choose Hervey Bay? I first came to the Bay in 1979 for a holiday and said that I would be back one day. That day arrived in March 1993 and I have enjoyed every day in paradise. Choose a movie title for the story of your life. Bandit. What s your favourite time of the day and why? Morning, because it is quiet and peaceful and I have got another day to live. If you could only ever eat three foods what would they be? Pasta, fruit and meat. What are three things still left on your bucket list? I still have not found the bucket yet but I am looking forward to spending more time with my grandkids before they get too old. What are you passionate about? I am passionate about my family and helping veterans. What is the one piece of advice you would give to others about life? Don t get married.

4 Who are we? The Hervey Bay Sub-Branch of the RSL offers a FREE Pensions and Advocacy service that is staffed and operated by qualified Compensation Advocates and Welfare Advocates. Our staff provides professional advice and assistance on obtaining eligible benefits under the: Veterans Entitlement Act (VEA); Safety, Rehabilitation & Compensation Act (SRCA) and Military Rehabilitation & Compensation Act (MRCA) In addition, the RSL State Branch Pensions, Advocacy and Welfare Service have advocates throughout Queensland who are: Highly experienced in lodging claims under the Veterans Entitlements Act (VEA), Safety, Rehabilitation & Compensation Act (SRCA) and Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act (MRCA); Caring and qualified to practise in their areas of expertise; Able to draw on a wealth of operational and broad-based peacetime experience; and Having served overseas and in the ADF for many years. Services We Offer The Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch s Pensions and Welfare Service covers disability pensions, compensation payments, associated allowances, income support payments and treatment available to entitled veterans and former serving members of the Defence Forces and their dependents. 4 Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch Pension Office is open Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 12:30pm. Due to the overwhelming demand for our Pension Advocates, we advise that appointment times and interview times may be delayed. 5 Our team of 11 Welfare Visitation Officers are trained and authorized to assist the ex-service community (Army, Air Force, Navy and Police). This is a free service. How can they help? Welfare Visitation Officers are trained to assist with a range of services: Health Care Community Services available Concessions Respite Care Home/hospital/nursing home visits Arrange access to financial advice Assist with bereavement Assist with DVA services Liaise with Compensation Advocates to prepare claims. It would be an advantage if you have been involved in nursing, Community Services or Lifeline and could give a couple of hours per week, but the necessary Advocacy Training and Development Program ( ATDP ) training will be provided. 5

6 The Battle of the Coral Sea, fought from 4 to 8 May 1942, was a major naval battle between the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) and naval and air forces from the United States and Australia, taking place in the Pacific Theatre of World War II The Naval Association of Australia, Fraser Coast Sub- Section, held a commemoration for The Battle of The Coral Sea at Freedom Park on Friday 4 May The Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch President, Brian Tidyman, and Committee Members, Kevin Collins, Buster Crabb, Tracy Gillespie and Simon Morley attended. Membership is open to all members of any waterborne service, military or civilian, retired or serving; we do also have social membership available. We meet to promote social contact and support amongst members and their families, with monthly meetings and frequent bus trips to places of interest. 7 The Hervey Bay Community Link Program has picked up in the first half of this year. We have had enquiries from the other Sub-Branches in Central and Western Queensland and people on the Fraser Coast are still joining the Program. This year s ANZAC Centenary Youth Competition has been sent out to the senior schools. The theme this year is: Army Nurses (We Honour Them) The Sub-Branch is hoping for a good turnout for this competition. John Beattie, Deputy President Community Link Co-Ordinator 7

8 Have you seen the ex-hmas Tobruk items on display in the foyer? The Queensland Government in conjunction with the Fraser Coast and Bundaberg Regional Councils kindly donated a telephone off the flight deck, damage control telephone switchboard, engine thermometer and a Minimi Rifle Rack. Thank you to Simon Morley, our Memorabilia Officer, for sourcing these items on behalf of the Sub-Branch Thank you to Maryborough Special School for their kind donation of framed prints to the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch. The prints were part of an exhibition Stand Proud Lost Heroes held at the Art Gallery in Hervey Bay earlier this year in conjunction with the Queensland Government ANZAC Centenary Grants Committee. Deputy President, John Beattie and Memorabilia Officer, Simon Morley attended a special Assembly at the School on invitation from Arts Program Director, Rose Wright, on 21st May, 2018 to be presented with the framed prints. They are now on display in the foyer of the Club and at our welfare offices in Legacy House. 8 Legacy has existed for 95 years, caring for the families of deceased veterans. We, at Hervey Bay Legacy Group, need to increase our volunteer body to serve our 360 beneficiaries, who are the widows and children of deceased veterans. 9 RSL WOMEN S AUXILIARY NEWS June 2018 INVICTUS GAMES LAUNDRY BAGS PROJECT: Ten laundry bags were made by our members Cosetta Stumer and Dorothy Kelso and they were delivered to the Central Council of Women s Auxiliaries NSW, together with those received from other Queensland auxiliaries. They will be part of the 500 or more laundry bags that will be distributed to the athletes competing at the Invictus Games in Sydney in October. The project was also very well supported by auxiliaries in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. COMMEMORATIVE CROSSES FOR ANZAC DAY: For the third successive year we provided small white crosses for personal commemorations. They were again well received by members of the community and 304 crosses were placed in the ground below the flagpole in Freedom Park prior to the two ANZAC Day services. The little crosses with red poppies attached were moving and impressive. MAY BUS TRIP: On 22 May several Auxiliary members went to Bundaberg to join the Bundaberg Auxiliary for lunch at a local restaurant. It was an opportunity to enjoy the company of fellow auxiliary members over a nice lunch and we hope to have a return visit from the Bundaberg Auxiliary fairly soon. A bus trip is being planned for 18 July. Visitors are welcome on our bus trips but seats are limited so please contact Esmé Fay on if you are interested in coming. LEGACY MORNING TEA: We were pleased to join with Hervey Bay Legacy Group at a morning tea at Baycrest Retirement Village this month. Four of our members went along with members of Legacy, and the Auxiliary sponsored the lovely morning tea of sandwiches and Devonshire scones. We were able to chat with the service widows in residence there and it was a very pleasant morning for us all. TOMBOLA: Tuesday 26 June is the date for our popular annual Tombola which will be held in Hervey House, starting at 10:00 am with entry from 9:30 am. There will be a lot of good prizes, including some special draws, as well as 6 raffle prizes and 2 lucky doors and a complimentary morning tea. It will be a fun morning with the chance to win a nice prize or two, and all the proceeds will be donated to local community organisations. Everyone is welcome to come and to bring a friend or two. In August the Auxiliary will celebrate its 89th anniversary. 30 Year Long Service Awards were presented recently to 3 members Ula Scott, Wanda Taplin and Betty Shaw in recognition of their long and much appreciated commitment to the Auxiliary. Our monthly meetings are held at the RSL Club from February-December at 10:30 am on the second Tuesday of the month. New members are always welcome at our meetings and to join us for lunch in the club afterwards. We have recently welcomed two new members who came to us from the Redlands Auxiliary. 11 This year the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch held Dawn Service and Main Service commemorations at Freedom Park. The crowd were moved by speeches from the Reviewing Officer LCDR Grant Anson, and last year s winners of the ANZAC Centenary Youth Competition, Sarah Laidler of Hervey Bay Sate High School and Cassidy Dobson of St James Lutheran College. A Gunfire Breakfast and lunch for members and invited guests was held at the RSL Club. This year s main march was the biggest yet with RSL Sub-Branch Treasurer Tracy Gillespie (Ex RAN) acting as RSM leading By The Left movement and Ex-Servicewomen to the Light Horse War Memorial in Freedom Park. 11

12 12 When you join the RSL, you haven t joined a club. You ve become part of an organisation that has been there to support those who have served our country and their dependants for 100 years. At RSL Queensland, our vision is simple: We support you, the military family According to our Constitution, the objects for which the RSL (Queensland Branch) is established are to: 1. Provide for the sick, helpless, wounded, aged, vulnerable, destitute and needy among those who are serving or who have served in the Australian Defence Forces and their dependants. 2. Perpetuate the close and kindly ties of friendship created by a mutual service in the Australian Defence Force or in the forces of nations traditionally allied with Australia and the recollections associated with that experience 3. Maintain a proper standard of dignity and honour among all past and present members of the Defence Forces of the nation and to set an example of public spirit and noble hearted endeavour 4. Preserve the memory and the records of those who suffered and died for Australia, erect monuments to their valour, provide them with suitable burial places, and establish and preserve, in their honour, the annual commemoration days known as ANZAC Day, Remembrance Day and other commemorative days 5. Encourage loyalty to Australia and secure patriotic service in the interests of Australia 6. Protect the good name and preserve the interests and standing of members of the Australian Defence Force 7. Encourage Members, as citizens, to serve Australia with that spirit of selfsacrifice and loyalty with which they served as members of the Australian Defence Forces 8. Provide welfare to the sick, helpless, wounded, vulnerable, aged, destitute and needy.

13 Battle of Coral and Balmoral The Vietnam Veteran s Association Hervey Bay City Sub-Branch held a commemoration of the Battle of Coral and Balmoral on Friday 25th May at the Cenotaph in Freedom Park, Pialba. A function was held at the RSL Club afterwards. 13

PO Box 3042, Pialba QLD 4655 The Naval Association of Australia is committed to four important principals; Care (i.e. the welfare of our members), Commemoration, Camaraderie, and we assist our local naval Cadet units. Care: We endeavour to visit any of our members/family who might be in hospital, or disadvantaged locally, and use our network to provide support to those who might be in hospital further afield. We pay home visits to members who are alone, and unable to easily get out and about. Commemoration: We have seen Anzac Day 2018 come and go. The Sub-section was pleased to have another strong showing at the main parade and marched proudly behind its banner. Leading our group was R.A.N. serving member ABMT Chris Price, who is our youngest member. Chris is the son of our inaugural president Marty Price. A service was conducted to commemorate the Battle of the Coral Sea on Friday 4 th May at the Freedom Park cenotaph. Also, the Sub-section was represented at the VVAA sponsored commemoration, which was held on the 25 th May, to mark the Coral and Balmoral battles fought during the Vietnam War. Coming up we are looking forward to the RIMAU commemoration, to be held at Dayman Point on Sunday 8 th July. This will be followed by Korea Memorial Day which will be held on Friday 27 th July at Freedom Park. Camaraderie: Our second social BBQ for this year, including a meet and greet for new members, was held at Dayman Point on Sunday 27 h May. A total of 37 members attended. The big event was our inaugural bocce championship. The weather was occasionally showery, but mostly fine, which resulted in a good time had by all! Cadets: Several of our members attended TS Maryborough s Navy League of Australia award on Saturday, 19 th May. 15 On 12 April 2018 the President of the Hervey Bay RSL & Services Memorial Club and the President of the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch presented Jakob Gillespie with a commemorative shirt and 2 wreaths for laying at the Memorial at the end of the Kokoda Trail. The Club s President along with the Sub-Branch President jointly sponsored Jakob for this challenging and lifechanging adventure. Unfortunately Jakob did not complete the trek due to his father, Scott, suffering a knee injury on day 5. Not to be thwarted by this set back, Jakob laid a wreath at the Bomana war memorial. For ANZAC Day. Whilst Jakob was unable to continue the trek, the time spent not only on the trek, but in preparation for the trek, was an i n v a l u a b l e experience that has made a massive impact on Jakob and given a newfound respect for those who were in the area during the Second World War. 15

16 B U D G E T P U T S VETERANS AND THEIR FA M I L I E S F I R S T Veterans and their families will continue to come first with $100 million in additional funding provided in the Budget announced on Tuesday. This funding is in addition to ongoing funds allocated to the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). In , this ongoing funding will total $11.2 billion. Minister for Veterans Affairs Darren Chester said the additional $100 million investment will help fund the continuing reform process underway at DVA. This transformation will ensure veterans and their families receive the services and support they need. The Government is working hard to make sure veterans and their families can access the services they rely on more easily and faster, Mr Chester said. DVA s transformation is about not only upgrading out-dated computer systems but also looking at improving our service delivery to ensure the best possible outcome for veterans and their families. We re also making sure that veterans can access DVA s services through digital platforms and investigating new ways to reach out to veterans. Included in the new funding is $4.0 million for the ongoing implementation of the Prime Minister s Veterans Employment Program and $4.3 million for additional services to help veterans enter the broader workforce. Transitioning to civilian life and finding meaningful employment post-service can be a challenge for some Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel, Mr Chester said. We know the best type of support for our ex-service men and women is the economic independence that comes with a job. The key to getting our veterans into the workforce once they leave the ADF is making sure businesses are aware of the unique skills and experiences these individuals have. That s why the Prime Minister s Veterans Employment Program is such an important initiative. Mr Chester said the new Budget funding would help those struggling to find a job by providing additional support with resume and interview preparation, translating ADF skills into civilian competencies, mentoring and coaching services. The Government is also investing $10.8 million to remove the reduction in the amount of incapacity payments when eligible veterans are undertaking approved full-time study as part of their rehabilitation plan. We want to encourage and support those studying with a view to getting them back into the workforce, Mr Chester said. The Budget also contains a major reform package designed to improve dental and allied health services for veterans. The package will be implemented in four stages that will include adjustments to fee schedules, a new treatment cycle initiative, trials of funding models and upgrades to meet future needs. These reforms are about making sure that the 140,000 DVA cardholders who access dental and allied health services benefit from improved communication between their GPs and service providers, Mr Chester said. We are also looking to expand the range of services we can deliver through new technology like telehealth via telephone or video and online video counselling. The Budget also: Expands eligibility for non-liability mental health treatment to Reservists with domestic or international disaster relief or border protection service or those involved in a serious service-related training accident; Extends eligibility for the Long Tan Bursary to the grandchildren of Vietnam veterans; and Reverses two Budget measures related to certain calculations under the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 at a cost of $5.3 million over the forward estimates.
