THE BRANCH NEWSLETTER Of the Hervey bay rsl sub-branch Inc. March 2019 Bugler at Dawn, ANZAC Cove, Gallipoli Lest We Forget 1

Members, Another year has gone and we are full swing into I hope all members had a successful festive season. By now the AGM will have been held and I congratulate and thank those who have been elected to the Committee and also those that did not stand for any position. ANZAC Day operational requirements are well and truly underway and a few changes are in the pipeline. One major change will be the route of the Main March. The assembly area will be as per last year and the March will exit onto Main St instead of Hunter St as in the past. The reason for this change is to cut the cost of barricades and, as our Veteran community ages, to reduce the distance and also to limit the exposure to the elements. The Pension and Wellbeing sections have experienced an increase in clients and this has created extra workload to the volunteers that perform these functions. If anybody feels that they have some time to spare for volunteering with either Pension or Wellbeing work, please come and see me and have a chat. By now you would have seen a Hervey Bay RSL Welfare Donated by the Estate of the late Fay Jones vehicle driving around the area. This bequeath came about because of the help that the Wellbeing Section afforded Fay, particularly Carol Edwards who went above and beyond her duty of care in assisting Fay. Thank you, Carol. Remember that my door is always open to any member who wishes to come in and have a chat. Until next edition, Brian Tidyman President. 2 T h e H e r v e y B a y R S L Sub-Branch Inc. is a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not for Profit Commission. The covenant, card and lapel pin will allow the community, whether they are employers, businesses, community groups, veteran or sporting organisations, the opportunity to recognise the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have served our nation. The Government has received a positive response from businesses which are supportive of the recognition program. The covenant includes an oath, which all Australians will be encouraged to take at community commemorative events, and is underpinned by the new Veteran Card and an Australian Veteran Lapel Pin and a Reservist Lapel Pin. 12 For further information please see the DVA website:

The Naval Association of Australia Fraser Coast Sub Section Each for All-All for Each Postal Address: Fraser Coast Sub-section of N.A.A. c/-hervey Bay RSL & Services Memorial Club Inc. PO Box 3042, Pialba QLD 4655 The Naval Association of Australia is committed to four important principals; Care (i.e. the welfare of our members), Commemoration, Camaraderie, and we assist our local naval Cadet units. Care: We endeavour to visit any of our members/family who might be in hospital, or disadvantaged locally, and use our network to provide support to those who might be in hospital further afield. We pay home visits to members who are alone, and unable to easily get out and about. A number of our members are committed to supporting the welfare and pensions needs of our ex-service community. As a side line, we deliver a free copy of Navy News to our ex-navy veterans. Eligible persons with welfare needs are invited to attend the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch Welfare office at Legacy House, Bryant St, Pialba. Commemoration: The Fraser Coast Subsection continues to commemorate significant events in the history of the Royal Australian Navy. Recent events have included small ceremonies at Freedom Park, to remember of the loss of HMAS Voyager (10 th February 1964), and the loss of HMAS Perth in the Battle of Sunda Strait in WW2 (1 st March 1942 ). Camaraderie: We have our 2019 social calendar prepared and ready to go and we are looking forward to some changes to last year s events. Cadets: TS Krait s hierarchy are negotiating with Hervey Bay TAFE to provide their cadet unit with a venue (on campus) for the immediate future. This will be a far better option than the requirement of the cadets having to use the Sub-Branch bus to travel to Maryborough for training. The Sub-section continues to offer support. Membership Membership of the Naval Association is open to former or serving naval personnel of Commonwealth Forces and Australia s Allies and the declared partners thereof. Former Australian Army and RAAF personnel who have been posted to HMA Ships and Establishments are also eligible to join. We also have a level of membership open to people who wish to support the association who do not meet the full membership criteria. 14 The Fraser Coast Sub-Section continue to meet at the Hervey RSL Boardroom on the 2 nd Sunday of the month (except January). Application for membership is invited please contact: Peter McDermott on or president@naafc.onmicrosoft.com, or Greg McHugh on or secretary@naafc.onmicrosoft.com

On Saturday 5 January 2019 at the Hervey Bay RSL Sports Bar, Committee Member Buster Crabb and his wife, Colleen, along with John Kelsey and Di Tidyman dressed up in pink and collected money for the Jane McGrath Foundation during the Jane McGrath Pink Test Cricket match. The amount of $ was donated by Club patrons. The Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch committee voted to match that donation. Jason Lynch, CEO of the RSL Club said the RSL Club would top up the donation to a total of $2, Thank you to all and well done! Legacy has existed for 95 years, caring for the families of deceased veterans. We, at Hervey Bay Legacy Group, need to increase our volunteer body to serve our 340 beneficiaries, who are the widows and children of deceased veterans. Would you, or someone you know, consider joining us as a legatee? Interested? Need more information? Contact Barry on

16 Christine Krupa (AKA Sub-Branch ) has decided that the time is right for her and Alex to enjoy retirement. Christine has worked for the Sub-Branch for 25 and a bit years and in that time has made many friends who will remember her for her efficiency, knowledge and friendliness. Chris has worked under several Committees in her tenure and her work ethic has not changed even with different Committees which shows her ability to adapt to varying personalities. To count the number of Veterans and others that Chris has helped throughout the 25 years is impossible to estimate, however I doubt if any of them would have a complaint about not getting the right information or not being pointed in the right direction to solve their problems My association with Chris began in 2005 when I became Parade Marshall for Anzac Day Services. I only had to ask for assistance and Christine would be there to help. In 2008 I joined the Committee and the working relationship continued to this day and I can say with absolute truth that without her I would not have the knowledge of the workings of the Sub-Branch that I have at present. Chris will be sadly missed but on behalf of all the Sub-Branch members I wish her and Alex a happy retirement. Brian Tidyman President

Many people choose to offer pledges to the RSL in lieu of floral tributes at the time of someone s passing, or to leave assets or funds to the RSL in their Will. Any and all forms of support continue to touch the people who need it most.
