From the Bushwalking Victoria President Bushwalking Australia AGM I attended the Bushwalking Australia Annual General Meeting in Hobart in mid- November. Over two days we shared a lot of information about promoting and progressing bushwalking across Australia. The Bushwalking Australia National Risk Management Guidelines were approved. I will work with my counterparts in other states to share and develop further guidelines to guide and inform bushwalkers. Andrew Davey from Tasmania was elected as President of Bushwalking Australia. I look forward to working with Andrew and the other Bushwalking Australia Council members over the coming year. Chris Towers stood down after almost four years as President of Bushwalking Australia, which also marked the end of seven consecutive years in executive roles in both Bushwalking Victoria and Bushwalking Australia. Chris has made a great contribution to promoting and furthering bushwalking with tremendous support from his partner Elaine. I wish them both well for their second retirements. While in Tasmania, I also picked up a freshly printed copy of The Abels Volume One (2 nd edition) and Volume Two edited by Bill Wilkinson. Combined, these books contain a lifetime of great bushwalks in Tasmania. Proposed National Australia Adventure Activity Standards (AAAS) Bushwalking Victoria has received a response from Sport and Recreation Victoria to our request for an exemption for recreational bushwalkers and volunteer community groups. While our concerns about the potential impact of these standards on our bushwalking activities were acknowledged, there is no firm commitment to ensure recreational bushwalkers are exempted from them. If you are concerned about the potential impact these standards may have on your club or your personal bushwalking trips, please consider contacting and meeting with your local State Member of Parliament to raise your concerns. I will send more detailed information about this to Bushwalking Victoria clubs and members via . Starting and Running a Bushwalking Club Manual We have now published the manual Starting and Running a Bushwalking Club as a resource for Bushwalking Victoria clubs and members. You can download the manual along with supporting documents and sample forms from the Members section of the Bushwalking Victoria website. Peter Campbell, President, Bushwalking Victoria Welcome to Two New Affiliated Clubs Bushwalking Victoria is pleased to welcome two new clubs to its network. The Board unanimously approved their applications at the November Board meeting. Mitchell Bushwalking Group The purpose of the Mitchell Bushwalking Group is to promote the pleasures of bushwalking, fitness and social interaction. The club was formed in 2010 and has over 20 members. Bushwalking News Victoria. Issue 275, December 2016 Page 2 of 15

Website: Federation Weekend 2016 a Huge Success After a year of planning, we finally did it! We accomplished a very successful Federation event, which is something our small club Wimmera Bushwalking Club is very proud of. The stress levels were high in the weeks leading up to the big weekend because of one of the wettest Septembers for quite some time was causing havoc, with the closure of roads and walking tracks. The Grampians experienced 328mm of rain in September, and another 111mm in the first week of October the week before the event! With Lake Wartook overflowing for weeks and GWM Water releasing mega litres of additional water, Zumsteins was completely cut off for several days. We didn t get confirmation that Zumsteins would be open for us until 3pm on the Friday before the weekend. If it hadn t re-opened, it would have really messed with our walks program as five of our walks needed to use that route. The two walks that were to use the McKenzie Creek Track had to be changed at the last minute to waterfall tours where participants would visit three or four nearby waterfalls. The high water level at Deep Creek meant the Deep Creek walk had to be changed on the Saturday to a walk to the Mt Stapylton summit and back. The Deep Creek walk was able to proceed as normal on the Sunday. Much time was spent in the week before the Federation Weekend in driving on and checking the condition of various dirt roads in the Grampians and Black Range. Some were pretty cut up and rough. Parks Victoria had kindly given us permission to use the closed Wallaby Rocks Road to access the start of the Asses Ears walk. Finally, Friday came. We set up at the Laharum Sports Ground. Registration opened at 4pm and it was all on, with dozens of keen bushwalkers rolling up, eager to check in and receive their welcome packs. The packs included the Federation Weekend s walks booklet and the magnificent photo landscape book Gariwerd, Reflecting on the Grampians, generously donated by Gib Wettenhall. Our registration volunteers were kept very busy on three registration tables and the Help Desk was flat out dealing with people wanting to make changes to their allocated walks and other queries. Approximately 230 walkers checked in on the Friday. The rest did so first thing Saturday. Bushwalking News Victoria. Issue 275, December 2016 Page 6 of 15

Left: Peter Conroy, Bushwalking Victoria Board member and Federations Walks Coordinator, registering Right: Gathering for departure Saturday arrived and all our prayers had been answered and we were greeted by a perfect sunny, calm, blue-sky day. We couldn t have asked for better. It was an early start. Leaders and walkers arrived to get ready for their big day. The venue was a hive of activity over the next two hours with walk departures arranged to leave every fifteen minutes. Groups gathered on the oval beside their walk numbers before heading off in their car convoys to their destinations and a great day of walking. Thirteen of our own club members were tasked as walk leaders or co-leaders on Saturday and they did a wonderful and professional job leading their groups. The volunteers back at base had a bit of quiet time after the last groups left. Chris and Steve waited nervously for a dreaded phone call advising of some accident or injury. Thankfully no such a call was received (except for one false alarm). Mid-afternoon saw the first groups of walkers returning to the hub. All appeared excited and chatty about their various experiences. They settled in for afternoon tea and sat around swapping stories. It sounded like they had a great day in lovely weather with heaps of wildflowers on show. The beautiful calm weather held out for our Saturday evening dinner. The Laharum Committee set up all the tables and chairs on the oval and had been busy all afternoon preparing two delicious spit roasts. It was just how we had imagined it to be: a fine evening on the oval with the Grampians as a backdrop. The weather gods were definitely smiling on us! Everyone enjoyed their meal. After the main course there were speeches by: Councillor David Grimble from Horsham Rural City Council; Chris Dunmill, Wimmera Bushwalking Club s President; Peter Campbell, Bushwalking Victoria s President; and Steve Knoll, Walks Coordinator. After dessert, the guest speaker David Roberts, Area Chief Ranger, Parks Victoria gave a very appropriate and interesting presentation on the Grampians Peak Trail. He enjoyed speaking about it to a large group of people who really had an interest in it and may one day walk it. Despite the evening getting a bit chilly, everyone seemed to really enjoy and be enthusiastic about his talk. Saturday night dinner on Laharum oval before dark Bushwalking News Victoria. 8 Saturday night dinner on Laharum oval after dark All of our good weather luck had been used up on the Saturday. The forecast for Sunday was for extreme winds in the region. After some discussion, it was decided that all walks should go ahead, with the leaders asked to evaluate their walks during the day and make any required changes or cancellations as deemed necessary. Sunday also saw another lot of people changing and/or cancelling walks. Several walks were changed during that windy day. The Pyke s Cave walk was cancelled due to the landowner s concerns about the possibility of falling trees. Instead, this group did the Mt Zero-Flat Rock walk in the opposite direction to the group originally scheduled to do that walk. Images by Chris Dunmill, Fran Callinan and Rob Cannon Top left: Calectasia walk Bottom left: Polners circuit walk Top right: Aboriginal art site tour Bottom right: Flat rock The Mt Stapylton Traverse group decided against completing the exposed traverse in the treacherously windy conditions. The Asses Ears walkers abandoned their walk half way through and went to Burrong and McKenzie Falls. Bushwalking News Victoria. Issue 275, December 2016 Page 8 of 15

The walk from Zumsteins to McKenzie Falls was completed and by all accounts the falls were spectacular. The Mt Thackeray walk ran into trouble soon after going through the gate to the Goat Track on the Victoria Range. A huge fallen tree blocked the path. They retreated to Buandik where by good fortune they met the Aboriginal Art Site Tour group (who had decided to do their tour in reverse this day). So they tagged along with them for the rest of the day. Several groups reported small fallen trees across roads en route to their walks, but they managed to negotiate them one way or another and continue on their way. All leaders and co-leaders are to be congratulated on the way they managed their walks in such difficult conditions. Despite any changes to walks, it sounds like the majority of people still managed to have an enjoyable day and in some cases a bit of an adventure. With all groups arriving back safely to Laharum, there was much trading of stories of their windy adventures over a nice cuppa. Fond farewells were said before the walkers started making their way for home. There was a lot of praise for Wimmera Bushwalking Club s magnificent effort in organising an enjoyable weekend. I would like to thank all our club members who helped out during the year with the organisation and all those who helped on the weekend. The leaders and co-leaders were great and the show wouldn t have run without the volunteers and their hard work back at the venue. A huge thanks to all the walk leaders and co-leaders from other clubs who volunteered their time for the weekend. We could not have done it without you. You all did a fantastic job and were very much appreciated. Thank you everyone. Statistics After cancellations, there were 280 walkers on Saturday and 246 walkers on Sunday. Walkers participated from 32 different clubs. 250 people participated in the Saturday meal and social evening. Leaders and co-leaders came from 9 different clubs. Chris Dunmill. President, Wimmera Bushwalking Club Bushwalking with Children Children learn navigation skills Whroo navigation weekend, September Leader: Chris Sewell During the September camping trip with my mother and a few other people who are close to us, we learnt the skills and techniques to help us navigate. We met many new people who were kind and friendly. On the first day we met up at the bakery and introduced ourselves. I had a carbonara pie which was delicious. We left Nagambie to go to Whroo, where we trained for a real navigation activity. We learnt how to use the compass on a map and we had to get to different points around Whroo. Chris mentioned that the word Whroo was a version of the Aboriginal word Wah-roo which means waterhole. We went to the Whroo cemetery where people who came for the gold in Australia were buried. There was a tombstone that mentioned that we were walking where a dead person once walked and soon we would be where he was. There was a Chinese man called Cheong. After that we visited the famous Aboriginal waterhole. The waterhole once had a stone on top that kept the animals from drinking the water and stopped the leaves falling in to pollute the water. The Aboriginals kept it this way Bushwalking News Victoria. Issue 275, December 2016 Page 9 of 15

because they were able to drink it using their hands. However, when Europeans came, they were not able to store any water because the rock was in the way, so they bombed it using dynamite, without knowing the stone was there to keep the water pure. So once it got polluted, which didn t take long, neither the Europeans nor the Aboriginals were able to drink the water. It was great to see some younger enthusiasts and aspiring navigators at the Whroo weekend. Pictured above is organiser of the navigation weekend, Chris Sewell, giving some instruction on taking a bearing to Ernest and Philip After the training, we set up camp at Fontainebleu Diggings, where there is a huge lake with many frogs that made loud noises which disturbed our sleep, although mother said that it put her to sleep. After we set up camp, we had another navigation exercise to remind us how to use the compass on a map, to look for markers on the knolls, and learnt about spurs and saddles. After we got a few tips from Chris, we headed back to camp and prepared dinner. I had spaghetti bolognaise. We had a campfire with wood which Chris cut with a chainsaw, which was awesome! We roasted marshmallows and Frankfurter sausages. As we slowly roasted our marshmallows they became crispy on the outside and sticky and gooey inside, and my mother could not resist trying them. My mother could also not resist trying one of Max s gluten free brownies and ended up having four. Ernest, Phil and I stayed up until 10 o clock playing card games. The next day, we woke up at 7.30am to have our breakfast. After breakfast we separated into small groups and were given a map with different points on them, which we had to find. We were also given radios (but I thought they were walkie talkies). We used the radios to confirm with Chris or Theo that the letters marked on the map matched up with the numbers we found in the bush. We had three hours to find as many points as we could. After the three hours, the group I was in had nine points in total. My mother s team only managed to get seven. Bushwalking News Victoria. Issue 275, December 2016 Page 10 of 15

Left: Setting out at Whroo - from left, Ernest, Philip and Joshua with adults, Chris and Mares Right: Philip, Joshua and Ernest take a break The weekend helped us with our navigation skills and showed us how, if we got lost in the wild, we would be able to get back to the main base. It was challenging to make sure that we had an accurate reading on the compass when we were taking our bearings. When we reached point J, we were asked to return to camp, taking a direct line back to base. This took us 30 minutes because J was far away. As it turned out, we were the first group back. So the boys in my group skipped rocks waiting for the others who weren t too far behind. We then had lunch, packed up and headed back to Nagambie where we met again at the cafe for fish and chips and milkshakes. The experience was great fun and it got us to be one with nature. I would advise the people who read this to do this training with family or friends. I had learnt to read the contours on the map and understand features like streams (blue lines on the map), knolls, saddles, and spurs. Thanks Chris and Theo for organising this trip. Trip report: Joshua, Year 7 Photographs: Rosalind L Source: Trampalong, November 2017, the VTMC newsletter Walking with grandchildren Grandchildren s walk, Wednesday 28 September Grandparents and 35 grandchildren gathered at Lysterfield at 9:30am for an 8km walk along Woodlands Walk, Lysterfield Hills Track to a Trig Point and along Wallaby Way. The weather was fine and mild. Along the way we saw many kangaroos, some with joeys. Unfortunately, we didn t see any echidnas. We had morning tea at the Trig Point among the granite boulders, with superb views of the surrounding district. We got back to the car park at about 12:30pm to have lunch. After lunch the children participated in a treasure hunt. Bushwalking News Victoria. Issue 275, December 2016 Page 11 of 15

Thank you Col Rigg for organising and leading this grandchildren s walk. It was a most enjoyable experience. Well done! Neville Knight, Maroondah Bushwalking Club Footnotes, November 2016 Walking with pre-schoolers My son, Jack, and I were eating lunch on the Two Bays Walking Trail when a group of walkers emerged from the forest. Ooh. Starting early! That s good to see, one of the walkers said. I am now in the bushwalking generation gap. On one side of the gap, you re young enough to take off any time for an adventure and return sufficiently recovered for the working week. On the other, your children have grown up and you no longer have the responsibility of being at home every weekend fulfilling your duty as a mum or dad. In the gap, you ve got children. But I don t believe bushwalking has to cease completely during the parenting years. In fact I am finding great joy and fulfilment taking our boys on local bushwalks. Using a children s pack 1. Before using a children s pack, the child should be able to support their head on their own. 2. You can still enjoy walking at your normal pace using a children s pack, which means being able to walk more kilometres and gives you the opportunity to reach further away places. 3. Children of the same age group of mine (10 months and two years, respectively) probably get cranky tired after lunch, so you might want to plan around that. 4. Make it educational. Dat noise? That s a cockatoo. O too. Point things out like trees, rocks, moss, rivers, animal names. Bushwalking News Victoria. Issue 275, December 2016 Page 12 of 15

Tips for walking with pre-school age 1. Have a goal. Aim for a waterfall, cliff, summit, lake, beach or something specific which they will find interesting. They are starting to understand fatigue and you can push them along if there s something to motivate them. You have to keep going, otherwise we can t climb the big rock. 2. Pre-schoolers need extra rests. Take plenty of snacks. And carry wet-wipes. 3. Introduce them to maps. You d be surprised what they can recognise when you teach them. 4. Keep watch at all times. While they are actually good at keeping to the track, they can run off if there are rocky outcrops nearby. It is a great experience every time. You never know what impact the outdoors can have on them, and the role modelling also goes a long way. As they grow bigger, stronger and fitter, the walks can become more demanding; and even at middle primary school age, pack carries are possible. The slower pace also allows you to notice bird sounds, insects, flowers etc that normally you would miss. I asked my boys if they want to climb Federation Peak for their 18th birthdays. They said yes. (Of course they don t understand what that means yet.)
