Instructions This homework booklet is all about mountains which is a brand new topic. You have learnt some skills in your Geography lessons that will help you with this booklet. Read each page carefully and do your best. If you have any problems you should ask your Geography teacher or go to homework club in Learning Support. Look out for the clock on each task that tells you the maximum time you should spend on each task.

Mountains of the World Lots of people can t agree on what a mountain actually is! Most people agree that a mountain has to be at least 1000m tall! You should label these mountain areas (shaded in grey) onto the map: Mountain Range Rockies Andes Alps Himalayas Atlas Great Dividing Range Transantarctic Mountains Continent North America South America Europe Asia Africa Oceania Antarctica You should now label these tall mountains (triangles) onto the map: Mountain Height (m) Continent Mt. McKinley 6,194 North America Aconcagua 6,960 South America Mt. Blanc 4,807 Europe Mt. Everest 8,848 Asia Vinson Massif 4,897 Antarctica Puncak Jaya 5,040 Oceania Mt. Kilimanjaro 5,895 Africa

NORTH AMERICA EUROPE ASIA SOUTH AMERICA AFRICA OCEANIA ANTARCTICA Help: there is only one mountain range and one highest mountain for each continent!

Mountain Climate Mountains can be dangerous places to be if bad weather arrives. You need to wrap up warm to climb a mountain!! For every 100m you climb uphill, it gets 1 C colder. So for every 1000m you go uphill it gets 10 C colder. You must complete the temperature for each height on the diagram. Why do you think you only get snow above 3000m?

Mountain Climate As well as getting colder, mountains are also pretty wet. Here s why

Weather in Innsbruck Innsbruck is a city in Austria that is on the mountains. You must use the climate graph on the next page to answer questions about the weather in Innsbruck. On a climate graph the bars show you total rain and snow and the line shows you how hot it is. Make sure you use the correct scale! 1) Which is the hottest month? 2) Which is the coldest month? 3) Which is the wettest month? 4) Which is the driest month? 5) Instead of rain what might it be in Dec, Jan and Feb? 6) If you lived here, how might it affect you?

Rain and Snow (mm) Temperature ( C) If you are struggling see your Geography teacher or go to homework club. Climate Graph for Innsbruck J F M A M J J A S O N D Months of the Year -5

Coniferous Trees Pine trees can survive high up in the mountains because they have adapted to their environment. You must finish the sentences to show 4 ways they have adapted: Pine trees often grow close together. This helps them to stay w m. It also helps them to stay protected from strong w d. Pine trees are shaped like a traffic c e. The shape helps them to shake s w off the branches before they sn p under the weight. Pine trees keep their seeds inside pine cones. This help them to survive for longer in the c d. Pine trees have thick bark that helps them to survive the c d.

Mountain Animals Match up the following 6 mountain animals with their description on the other side: 1) It is dark brown which helps to absorb more heat from the sun. It lives high up in the Himalayas and eats tiny grains of pollen blown by the wind. Letter = 2) Its thick woolly coat is very warm but sometimes it gets too hot so it also has bare legs. To cool down, it sticks its bum in the air facing the wind! It spits chewed up food at its enemies and lives in the Andes. Letter = 3) It lives in the mountains of Japan and keeps warm in winter by taking a dip in one of the hot pools; the outside temperature is -15 C but in the pool it s 43 C! Letter = 4) It has sharp hooves to dig into cracks in rocks to stop it from slipping. It s brilliant at climbing and has great balance for walking along narrow ledges. Letter = 5) It picks up bones from dead animals and flies high in the air. Then it drops the bone on to a rock to smash it open and get at the juicy middle bit. Letter = 6) It lives high up in the mountains of Mexico. It can survive being frozen solid for the whole night before being thawed by the sun in the morning! Letter =

Tourism in the Mountains Your final task is to look at tourism in the mountains and decide whether it is a good or bad thing. This is a picture of a ski resort in the Alps. You must label the features written in bold in the word box: You can now colour the picture in.

Chamonix, France Chamonix in a ski resort in France. Below is a picture showing the good points and bad points of a ski resort: You must answer this final question using the information about Chamonix: In your opinion do you think ski resorts are a good thing for the mountains? Try to give 3 reasons: I think that ski resorts are a good / bad thing for the mountains because
